I just wanted to say that i found the end of ME3 very depressing and have decided that i will not ever buy a game again where the chracter you have been fighting for, to keep him or her alive, is then sort of executed at the end of the game, no matter  your actions, because of "editorial jurisdiction".

What i think is so weird about the fact they have to kill Shepard from the universe is that it goes against the essence of just about every RPG ever developed, or any game for that matter which is that the fundamental motive for playing is to stay alive, thats why they invented save and load.

Funny thing is that Biowares attitude re killing the Shepard story is almost an analog of the Space child´s year zero type motivations. It´s like we must destroy the present and all history with it so the next generation can flourish.

In the case of Bioware, its we need to kill shepard so the mass effect universe can continue.

In my last playthrough ending of ME3 i really started thinking the dialogue of space child is explaining ot players why Shepard is about to dissapear, nothing to do with Reapers and all to do with commercialism at EA and Bioware.

So my promise to any game developer is i will preorder nothing until i hear about the ending and i will not buy any more forced death endings. I dont want a depressing end of my games, there´s enough of that in real life.

OP: In time you'll recover. ~ 1 year or so from now, you still won't understand the "why" it ended this way, but it'll hurt less.

@OP: You got a lot of it.

BW ALWAYS said that ME3 would be the end of Shepard's story. I don't understand why so many people can't accept that. BW realized that the only way to definitively show that Shepard's story was over would be to kill him/her off.

I for one am a fan of the Heroic Sacrifice trope. That part of the ending bothered me not at all.

Well i would have preferred an ending where he lives, and then retires with his LI or whatever. It´s not Bioware deciding that they want to move onto another main character that bothers me, its their attempts to justify it by making sure Shepard is dead or as close to dead as possible.

Shepard lives in high ems destroy.... For a reason.

But anyways. Yeah. Ending is full scrub. BioWare really, REALLY went full retard with the ending.

Hudson said it was "high level stuff".

Yeah..... If you're mentally challenged, then maybe.

Maybe.

What a silly flippant remark. I´ve been playing pc games since 86 which sort of shows my age. Please name all those RPGs you claim kill the main character at end of game?

Problem with the high EMS he lives ending is that it feels no different than anyof the other endings. In my destroy high EMS ending i still get Liara putting my nameplate up with the dead, even though then i do the gasp of breath.

So there i am screaming at the computer...i´m still effing alive!

Answer: Not many.

Has Cloud died yet in FF??? Ican bet that in one of the final endings in Witcher 3, Geralt will die. But it will be because the player wants to or knows it will happen. I get your point.

It's funny cause back in 2012 it was so shocking. Everyone was shocked. Then confused. Then sad. Then really, really p!ssed off, lol. I'v never seen anything like it. Polarizing is a pretty good word for the ending fiasco. Even my GF ( doesn't play games at all beside angry birds, lol) even was like "Dafuq did I just watch" when she watched me beat the game the first time. Hilarious.

That and "maybe" for being the epic and spectacular last chapter of a sci-fi adventure game trilogy. Believe me, it's only the hardcore fans who care so much about the ending. I'm talking about those poeple who invested weeks of their lives into the first two games, those who buy merchandise, write and read fan-fiction etc.. Casual players and a great part of the fandom don't care about it regardless what they thinked about it when they were playing.

There are a few. Planescape:Torment comes to mind: the objective of the game is for the PC to die and go to hell. (Well, the Lower Planes, anyway.)

You're right that it's not all that common in western RPGs, unless we expand the definition of RPG enough to include some of the stuff that, say, Rockstar does. OTOH, RPGs that are about a single protagonist  PC who isn't supposed to maybe come back in a sequel are fairly rare in the first place, so we've got a fairly small sample size.

I've heard that the protagonist dies a lot in JRPGs, though. I haven't personally ever played any of those, so don't take my word for it.

Planescape Torment was quite different though in that you start the game waking up from the dead....so you are sort of dead all the way through.

Great game though. Looking forward to the new Torment hopefully coming this year.

This basically describes how I feel about it. They don't have to end the character's life just because they're ending the story.

Your reward for getting as much of the galaxy in the fight as you can is shepard living. The execution of it leaves a lot to be desired, but I think they haf good reason to do it like that to make the other endings more palatable to the general player.

exactly, that´s my point about promising that i wont invest emotional capital in a game which makes your journey to stay alive redundant. It´s like an antithesis of game playing, it completey removes the motive for staying alive...whats the point?

Folks play games for escapism from mundane life.

Saving the galaxy from the threat of the Reaper's cycles of extinction is a pretty good reason to keep fighting.
I'll agree to the second part, but I'm not the best unbiased case for that.
