It´s not Bioware deciding that they want to move onto another main character that bothers me, its their attempts to justify it by making sure Shepard is dead or as close to dead as possible.

This basically describes how I feel about it. They don't have to end the character's life just because they're ending the story.

exactly. I would have been perfectly satisfied with an ending where Shepard succeeds, survives and there is a proper epilogue instead of the late Citadel dlc nonsense.

They could have made Citadel dlc like an after game.....which then goes to show Shepard retiring, perhaps moving to some distant planet with his LI, or whatever. For heavens sakes, he deserves that ending after everything he has done, way more than being offed fait accompli.

Yeah, I play Mass Effect because I can be the hero that explores the final frontier, bangs whoever he wants and shoots aliens on his way to saving the entire galaxy.....you know, things I can't do in real life.

However, while I also play for "escapism", that doesn't mean I expect a character to be immortal/invincible or just downright incapable of dying. In fact, if that were the case the stakes wouldn't carry much weight at all.

Sure but i´m not asking for immortality, as in any normal game your player can die at any time and you´ll have to reload. I just dont want to be like some actor in a soap opera the producer decides is surplus to requirements.

That is immortality though. You do not want your character to die in the story. Dying and reloading is just a gameplay mechanic.

so, is that the way you'll feel when your life is coming to an end? That you're just some actor, and that life's just some soap opera? Hmm...

Its a computer game and not real life! I dont know what i will think when i actually die in real life but frankly i rather not go through rehearsal before my time!

And especially in a computer game that is supposed to be ficitonal.

Yes the control ending is sort of like becoming an immortal God, but i did not find that satisfying either, hence its not immortality i´m after. I just wanted a happy ending...call me soppy.

you miss the point. I was simply implying that art imitates life. In life, you don't get some sort of choice at the end of the line that says "Go this way to die" or "Go this way to live". We don't get to choose when our time is up. All we have to decide is what to do with the time we have. If that's not the type of experience you're looking for then look to other games.

art imitates life is rather cliched really and i would not agree because life is so complex no art can possiblty imitate it. So i just don´t get the analogy you are making.

Show me a piece of art that accurately imitates life? Sounds good but in practice it doesnt make sense.

hmm, the cut with him breathing is all of 2 seconds long and seems to me a sop to those of us that were going to get upset about it. It´s like they went "oh crap better show an ending where he lives otherwise the fans will go ape"

In fact that ending is even more annoying because in my last playthrough i romanced Liara from ME1 totally loyal, and even though i am supposed to have survived she still puts my nameplate on the death roster, and then i see a scene of the Normandy actually flying off the planet again.

I was like....WTF? I´m still alive dammit! hehe

If you had high EMS and she put it on the wall then your save bugged, I romanced Garrus and he refused to put it on the wall and looked up all mysteriously and turian like.

Liara outting your nameplate on the wall in the High EMS ending is not a bug, it happens if you don't romance anyone in the ME3 crew. How would someone who isnt your LI have the magical capability to sense whether you're alive or not? Only LI's have that space magic 6th sense.

Yup i had enough EMS and it even shows me breathing for a second. But she still got the plaque with my name on it. And then the Normandy appears and flies off like they are all going to have new adventures without me.....John Shepard...how dare they!? hehe

in that playthrough i romanced her in 1, 2 (dlc) and 3. We are even saying we love eachother....i dont see how i can romance her anymore than that.

This is what i think, Bioware put such little thought into the survival ending for obvious reasons that it doesnt actually make sense in the survival ending.

Wait, Liara puts your name on the wall regardless? Bioware must not have had enough time to sprinkle Liara with the magic dust other LI's were given.

which is surprising as she seems so integral to the final game of the series.

But anyways. Yeah. Ending is full scrub. BioWare really, REALLY went full retard with the ending.

Hudson said it was "high level stuff".

Yeah..... If you're mentally challenged, then maybe.

Maybe.

Problem with the high EMS he lives ending is that it feels no different than anyof the other endings. In my destroy high EMS ending i still get Liara putting my nameplate up with the dead, even though then i do the gasp of breath.

So there i am screaming at the computer...i´m still effing alive!

Actually your LI doesnt put that nameplate up, she looks up and senses youre still alive. And so you are.

It suggests that Shepard has indeed survived. Unfortunately after that it doesnt show anyhting else. You have to make it up in your head.

I think BioWare thought that as their fanbase was made up of RPG fans, that the fans could use their imagination and come up with their own headcanon on what happens next without any bother. I admit, I thought so too, how wrong I turned out to be. The fanbase disappointed me.

Not all RPG's but

Chrono Trigger

Fire Emblem: Awakening (Choice)
Red Dead Redemption
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
God of War 3
