Normandy was disabled while engaged in evasive maneuvers. It would have to be travelling pretty damn fast.

I for one am a fan of the Heroic Sacrifice trope. That part of the ending bothered me not at all.
yes but "end of sheppard's story" does IMHO not mean the main character had to die (!) a ride of in the sunset (like in old western movies just a modern version of it of course) or sitting in a bar with all surviving characters from the team and others (or better sitting in the rubble next to a destroyed reaper - preferable harbinger (!) - or even on the reaper (!)), now that would have been ok add finding an unbroken bottle of liqueur/booze and passing it around and it makes for a good ending. but this: you die, no matter what you do made the whole series pretty pointless IMHO.
