I am almost through the game now. My favourite RPG ever was BG2, so my comparison between this and that game, plus the fact they are both by the same people, has allowed me to make a list of annoyances....

Things that should not be.

Things that have not improved, and have in fact been made worse. And the thing that made number one on my list, was the "save". Not, that the autosave does not save upon exiting each area, so when there is a crash while loading (which happens too often). or when I alt-tab, I lose half an hour of gaming. No, this is annoying, and its something Bioware should have sorted, no excuses.... Not the crashing, but the saving.... but its not my prime concern.

My main biggie was about the quick save...

Well, I am at risk of sounding like a total dumbarse, but the matter needs addressing...

After an epic battle versus Branka and her cohorts, which took several attempts, and left me in the darkened room in the early hours. Pleased with my victory after so many tries, struggling to stay awake, I did what most people do and reached out for the quicksave, in case a freak electrical storm fries my pc, or some other stroke of bad luck. But the light was bad, and my gaze was still focused on the screen, breathing in the faint odour (the sweet smell of roses) that victory brings (or was it a fart?), my hand ran across the top of my keyboard, seeking out the break in function keys that would signify the position of quicksave, gently caressing the buttons with my gentle touch, until I found my target, and pressed down with all my might...

Only to find the odur had addled my brain and caused my bearings to be out of kilter with reality. I had done the unthinkable. I had accidently pressedown "F9".

I had pressed "quick load".

And it wasnt the only time I had done it either. Oh no. But never in such a stupid place such as this. Why, oh why, Bioware? With BG2, the quick save was on its own. There was no quickload to confuse things. Its like building a childrens playground on a railway line. Who even uses quickload, anyway?

Anyway!

My question is this: Can I reassign quickload to another key?

Thanks Image IPB

Peace!

Go to the Control tab under Options and you can change the key binding for Quickload.

Yes, you can reassign all the keyboard commands to any keys you want to. Just go to the options in the menu and choose the gameplay tab (I hope it is gameplay tab, can't open the game now to check). I myself have the quicksave at F12, easier for me to remember, since that is also a quicksave key to some other games I've been playing. Although, sometimes that is too close to the 'shut off computer' key, and what has happened to me couple of times is, that I've turned off the computer during a battle... and cursed the stupid keyboard designers that place such a key too close to other keys.

lol don't blame Bioware for this

In BG2, I actually set a key to quickload through the config application. It's very handy. And F5 is far from F9...

Honestly I like quick load, it works well with quick save, I some times don't want to do a menu shuffle to load a game, so it's good, and there is a work around for you're issue, so I think it's not so much of a bad thing, though I Do sypmathize with your pain, in many another game.

happened to me as well, pressed F9 instead of F5 and i lost about 6 hours of gameplay. but i didn't blame Bioware for that. i blamed myself. and F9 is like a whole block of keys away from F5.

Wait... this wasn't the only time you pressed F9 instead of F5... boy you must have some fat fingers!

How the hell could you lose six hours of gameplay from ONE button click, unless you turned off auto save and never hardsaved; which isn't to smart and is asking for trouble. Like writing an essay, never saving, then being upset when two hours later microsoft word crashes. DAMN YOU WORD! DAMN YOU!

Wow! Just...wow. What is the fascination with quicksave anyway? It's extremely risky if you find out, ten minutes later, that you screwed something up after quicksaving again. Take the time to do a real save.

F5 and F9 are about two and a half inches apart. How'd you mix those up? And if you never use it, you can un-assign it in the controls tab.

Ahah I did the same the first time i finally managed to get a certain character to drop the Warden Commander Shield... it took about 40 attempts. At the end i was so damn used to hitting F9 over and over, that I did it again...

Do what I do. I have never once, never ever ever, used the Quicksave. I pause the game, or just reach up and hit Esc. and click on save game.

Just bind Quick Save to a mouse button. That's what I did.

pfft, just play the game all the way through without stopping and don't die. No save necessary. :)

I save everytime I get +1 approval and after every encounter. My saves folder is 1.7 gigs in size, go figure how I care for autosave.

It's been like that since NWN, TESIV, FO3, Drakensang, etc. I can save 3 times in 2 minutes and that allows me to have a library of which sequence I want to play and to cover all plot variations without having to replay the entire game.

I have over 3GB of manual saves. Playing Bethesda games teaches you to save like hell.
