Do you consider Anders to be manipulative?

You mean his emotional blackmail if you romanced him was manipulative? I thought that was just how he showed me his love!

A paranoid psycopath possessed by an angry spirit. On the topic of justice he reminds me of an obsessed paladin that tries to preserve by exterminating.

I think at some point Anders for most part ceased to exist. His 'blackouts' that he refers to when Justice takes over.

Overall the two brought out the worst in each other destroying what was good in both of them. You could choose not to help Anders collect the ingredients needed for the bomb, but you could never stop him from making and planting it in the end.

He was actually acting out the wishes of blood mage Hawke

Meredith was the only one who resisted him

Don't forget the Taint, which is another cowpie in the middle of all that mess.

Troika wouldn't handle the Anders decision like that. Just saying.

Fenris goes on about hating mages but did you really think at one point he was going to sneak into the Gallows an murder a bunch of mages?

Fenris has his problems, but I think he's more likely to do this.

Thanks for making me ****** myself....

Funny thing is, I still like Anders as a character and still enjoy the romance.

@Par That's me.  I'm a helper. :D

As long as they stick to their word not to bring him back from the dead again I'll never have to find out. He went from my favorite char in awakening to one of my most hated in DA2 so I always kill him.

All of them were manipulative, Anders was the most annoying though.

He lied to me about what he needed reagents for, refused to tell me his plan, told me he didn't want me involved even as he had me distract the grand cleric so he could plant a bomb.

I'll say he's manipulative.

Anders manipulative? maybe
Anders character ruined in DA2? definitely
The character merger of Anders and Justice could of been one of the best comedic sources in DA instead they went too serious.

Psychopath + manipulative + Long hair = Andres was trying to be a cult leader without the harem.

Actually, he did want the harem, at least before Justice took over. :P  I don't think he was entirely serious.

Awakening:

Anders: "All I want is a pretty girl, a decent meal, and the right to shoot lightning at fools."
Warden: "I think you're aiming too low."
Anders: "Fine. I want a harem, a feast and the right to rain fireballs on every templar I see."

On a more serious note, I have to chuckle when folks talk about the flirty and smartass side of Awakening Anders; yet choose to forget about that.  He was always angry and bitter.

For Inquisiton: I wonder if the more extreme mages heard the rumors about Anders and Justice and might think it's a good idea.  I wonder if we'll see more of spirit possessions/abominations running around.  I also have wondered if it's the Taint that's affecting Justice/Anders as much if not more than the union itself.

AGREED! The only difference between DAA and DA2 Anders is that DA2 is less funny and more active in his freedom fighting.

You already know my answer to this. Ignoring rival path, because you literally tell him to go **** himself, in his friendship route he lies to protect hawke from getting any blame for destruction of chantry. Its the very definition of manipulate but like everything else Anders does its about being able to recognize a gray character.

people are going either "OMG HE'S AN EVIL MURDERING BASTARD" or "OMG FINALLY SOMEONE BLEW UP THE CHANTRY" and missing the bloody point: that Anders himself never questioned that what he did was wrong. He fully acknowledges that his actions were murder, and were morally contemptible, and that justice was required of him for what he did. What he understood is that it wasn't about right or wrong, it was about necessity. He believed that the system of imprisoning mages within Circles, under the watch of the Chantry's templars, was wrong, and would accept nothing less than total freedom. And with that, he understood that unless someone was willing to take drastic measures, then nothing ever would change. He knew that the templars would rise against mages everywhere for his action, and that therefore all the mages locked within Circle towers would be forced to rise up against the templars in order to save themselves. By his actions, no mages would be able to take, say, Wynne's position that the templars and Circles are necessary, except for those mages who hated their own magic and wanted to embrace imprisonment or even suicide. They would have to either submit to templar tyranny, or fight to save their own lives. By extension, he also removed middle-of-the-road templars who weren't quite so eager to terrorize the mages under their watch. So he removed any stalemate--"there can be no compromise"--in the name of ending an indisputably broken system that served no one.

Well, let's see:

Killed a mage girl and tried to convince her parents the Templars did it.

Lied to Hawke in order to make a bomb.

Tried to convince Hawke to help him destroy the Chantry and, if s/he doesn't agree, tries to emotionally blackmail him/her with phrases such as "If you don't help me, you've never loved me."

Forced the mages into a fight-or-die situation.

And those are just the ones I can recall right now. I'm fairly certain there's more evidence if I bothered to look. So, yes, he is very manipulative.

Odd, Bethany and Merrill did not live under quarantine and still never went on an killing spree. Of course I can't vouch for all mages. Circles are needed, I think even Anders knew that, he just didn't wanted bigots and crazy zealots to be in charge of it.

The Circle failed the mages because it allowed mages to suffer horrific abuses without punishment. That's what he meant.

Anders lived in Ferelden's Circle. He didn't do those things because of abuses. He did those things because he's a radical.

What I understand doesn't matter really, I was exploring the fact that why Anders did what he did in his own view point.

In this, he was a tragic figure, taking it upon himself to be the reviled murderer so that other people would have the freedom to condemn his actions. Like it or not, that is a very realistic, real-world scenario. For every Martin Luther King or Anne Frank or Rosa Parks or Gandhi you see in the world, there are people with blood on their hands who give the rest of the world the opportunity to take the moral high road. Their actions ARE despicable, but that doesn't make them any less necessary. This is the point that the rest of us are missing, from our very comfortable positions in life: being able to take the high road and condemn the actions of murderous freedom fighters is, sometimes, not recognized for what it is: a luxury that we would NOT HAVE if not for those murderers giving the rest of the world something to rally around.
