dont underclock to far. Overclocking and underclocking is for experienced users only, ive told you all this several pages back. But its only a temp fix, but should let you play for atleast 1-3 hours. Sometimes longer and for a select few never crash again.

ATI Radeon HD 3200. An onboard laptop card, has never crashed once with (What I presume to be) the latest drivers.

Well, at least I've finally confirmed it was some sort of conflict with my HD3870. I used this as an excuse to update my video card. Bought an HD5770 and the game runs without flaw.

After several days of trying lots of things, was able to set the affinity of daorigins.exe to 2 of the 4 cores - no issues at all now for about 12 hours of playtime.

I underclocked my 3870 from 800/1170 to 750/1100 and I got about 30 minutes in before it crashed. Better than nothing, but not fixed. I'm going to try 725/1075 and see how long that gets me.

Try 700/1000 with the 3870 card, played for over 4 hours without interruption.

This might help some less exprienced people slelct right clock-speeds:
http://www.gpureview...ard1=547&card2=

Just select the card you have to see the default clock speed ment by ATI/Nvidia, and scroll down to see a list of different models and their speeds.

Edit:

By the way, had another crash to black screen, luckly I had GPUz runing and logging everything, these were stats at the moment of the crash:

GPU Core Clock [MHz] 796.0
GPU Memory Clock [MHz] 1170.0
GPU Temperature [°C] 60.0
Fan Speed [%] 40
GPU Load [%] 37

Infact during a six hour playtrough temperature never whent over 61 Celsius, and GPU load never whent over 42%, I'm not talking for other, but at least for myself this rules out GPU overheating or overloading.

These lower setting seemed alright for me for another 30 minutes.... Fine for a temporary fix, but not the way I want to have to play DAO for the rest of the game.

Jup. Underclocking seems to be at least a dirty workaround. (I have a GeCube 3870 that's OCed out of the box.)

But I'm still hoping for a patch soon. And I don't care if it's from AMD or BioWare...

Here's what I did today.

Format HDD
Clean Install Win7 - 32-bit Version this time as some thought 64-bit might be the problem.
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Installed DirectX from the Dragon Age DVD
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Installed Dragon Age, Clean Install, no "Did this program install correctly" Question at the end.
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Updated Graphics Drivers
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Updated DirectX
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Updated PhysX
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Installed Dragon Age Patch 1.01a
Defragmented the HDD
Restarted the System
Ran the game, Played for 2hours on settings selected for me by the Game, Dalish Warrior.
The game crashed in the Dalish Camp after returning with Duncan.

Quite the class A product with class A support, from class A company we have here, wouldn't you say? and by A I mean Ass, Anyone with the CE watched the Making of  yet? so much boasting and self-satisfaction, only an empty shell of a person could do fake something like that, Usually I wait untill I do a job right before I feel good about myself, well I suppose that's the best they can do, you know, being mentall challenged and all.

well if you actually would read the stickied notes, you would have understood this forum is for players helping players and that for official support you need to be somewere else, the link is in the sticky.

Running DA on an older lap top with ATI Mobility HD 2600 on Windows XP. 9.10 drivers. was running great as a lot of people have seen until returning with Duncan. Managad with some of the fixes (ie turning settings down, windowed mode...) to get through that to Oronagar (sp) and now get the black screen. After reading all the posts thought I'd try all the different drivers I had.
Have tried everything from: 8.8 thru 9.10 with varied results except that always ends with black screen at same point except 9.2 ended with Blue screen of death and a reboot.

Also went though the Dwarf comoner starting with the 9.10 but was late and got tired will update when/if a crash occurs

I can read just fine, thank you very much, unfortunately, the official support consists of passing the buck, and while they keep playing the blame game, the people that paid for the game are getting boned.

OK, I know this isn't working for some people but I am using ATI 4800 series. Reverting to Catalyst 9.6 driver didn't help, but after I did this I switched from Windowed to Full Screen mode, then lowered all graphic settings.

I was crashing every time I tried to leave the Chantry in Lothering, and this allowed me to leave and continue the game.

Good luck, all - I swore I would never buy another EA game after having terrible tech support experiences with them in the past...unfortunately, they seem to be the publisher for virtually every game on my wish list this year.

I was having the black screen of death issue. after updating my sound driver the game has run with no issues for half an hour(before it would crash within 2 min). i do use the integrated sound on my intel MOBO. after 20 min of game play i also increased my CPU fan speed to keep it cool as it was running at 55* C. now at about 50* C.

I will keep you updated if my game decides to crash again on me.

EDIT: I went back to the Dalish Elves woods area where i was having the black screen issues just after i enter the east part of the forest i get the black screen again. <_<

I have an ATI Radeon 4850. I have never experienced a crash, but I did have excessive articfacting just starting the game and sitting in one spot. Many have suggested that underclocking is a temporary work-around for the crash; it also worked for me on the excessive flickering.

Ok... for the update: After underclocking (750/1050) my 3870, the game did not crash for the next aprox. 2 hours. After that, I had to quit cause the wife was naging ;)

Apart from that, I didn't change a thing. No CPU assignment, no driver downgrade etc.

Is anyone seeing the Irony in the fact that Majority of problems are on the hardware labeled in the system requirements?

This is the second time in my recent memory that a game with an EA logo has failed operating on Hardware it has recommended, at this point, it is safer to assume EA has just made a mistake and mislabeled their Incompatible Hardware list as System Requirements.
