Well this will be my last post in this thread. Since buying the GTX275 I have had zero issues, the game has not lagged and runs flawlessly still with over 6 hours of play. I am absolutely amazed that the game went from absolute non working **** to stellar simply by getting rid of my so-called awesome ATI piece of **** card.

I am playing at max graphic settings in stellar 19200X1200 resolution and this game is phenomenal. Hands down one of the best rpg's made. I am still pissed off that EA and ATI have done nothing to fix this issue or perhaps they just don't know how?!? Good luck to the rest of you and if you can afford to upgrade the GTX275 is one mean video card. As a long time ATI supporter I bid them farewell for good.

There is no doubt in my mind that no matter what work around you try, the problem is the video card. Once I installed the GTX275 the game was running like it was new. As I have stated I have not had one single issue or bug. SHAME ON YOU BIOWARE/EA AND ATI FOR STAMPING YOUR LOGO ENDORSEMENT ON THE ****ING BOX AND LEAVING YOUR CUSTOMERS OUT TO HANG!

User error.

Stupid people really should not breed as this is the outcome!

User errror. ATi sucks wahhhhhhhh, nVidia sucks wahhhhhhh, give me my chocolate milk.

Alright I'm done now.

You can use CCC btw, to down clock your card... I don't see why you'd need to use riva turner, that is usually used for nvidia cards anyway.

Actually you can't underclock your video cards lower than 800/1170. I can confirm that underclocking the 3870 does work from the freezing. I played well past where I was getting the freezing yesterday. Today I started it up and boom it froze on me again but it tuned out that once I restarted it went back to default setting so that explained that.

I'm about to underclock my video card again and if you don't see another post saying otherwise it will work just fine again.

With Riva Tuner I have my settings on 751/1057 taking someone's other post for advise.

Here is a walk through on how to underclock your card.

http://www.playtool.....html#rivatuner

This fix appears to be working for my 3870 as well. I was crashing at Ostagar every time, and although I have only been playing about an hour since this I have made to the quests in the Wilds.

This fix worked for me too with my ATI 3870 HD card.  Thanks to those who worked hard helping us.

I have had NO problems...using a Sapphire 3870. With Catalyst 9.4; I haven't bothered updating for a while because everything runs great. Getting 45 fps consistently at 1280x1024 with 4x AA. Level 12 now and never crashed.

hmm, think ill revert back to 9.2 and see how that works out. i remember when 9.0 versions came out from ATi there were a lot of bugs and glitches with other game series. i couldnt get spore to run at all and fallout 3 would randomly crash. im going to bet this is the same issue again.

My ATI HD3870 will not run this game. Runs everything else near perfect, but this game.....

You should read my post on page 14 to fix the problem. It works just fine once you get it underclocked to those settings bud.

Thanks man! This works like a charm.

Im using Gigabyte ati 4890 1GB DDR5 gfx card and I've been having alot of crashes, posted earlier in this thread with specs and now I've tried different driver versions(9.10, 9.7, 9.11) and none of them fix the crashes. I followed the fix someone posted about changing the shortcut to DA:O on desktop so it runs in XP SP2 comp mode and opens the game .exe instead of the launcher. It fxed the game so I can play for 1-4 hours between crashes instead of 15 min, but its annoying to have to save game every 10-15 min(lvl11 and think I have 90 saves.

Latest thing I tried was to use CCC to underclock the core+memory with 50 but the game still crash. Gonna try to install drivers only and not CCC, hope it helps, want to fix this so I can play without restarting my pc 15 times a day, and dont really wanna buy a new gfx card cause 1 game aint working

Never had any issues with my 4830.

Your memory sucks. A night with memtest86 would make your problem visible.

after my latest post I installed 9.11 display drivers only, so no CCC, and I've been playing since, up to 5 hours now and I got a crash :(

ATI 4850 X2, current drivers, set everything to MAX, AA. etc. Had to turn back the RES so I could read the text. ;)

Have had no issues whatsoever. Straight 12 hour run yesterday.

I am still receiving the black screen of death. I've tried underclocking my 5770 as mentioned above, but it did nothing. I've got the latest drivers and I've tried changing the games graphical options and the bug still is 100% reproducible.

I've downloaded Rivatuner and was gonna try that solution but when I open the program it says "No additional information available" right under the graphics card name and when I click Customize I cant see any graphics card so I cant use RivaTuner apparently. Got a message at first startup saying something like RivaTuner doesn't recognize the drivers and I should update Rivatuner, (got v2.24 from 2009)

Does anyone know what I should do? will try older drivers to see if they work and then a memtest86. other than that I dont know

After a couple of crashes today I clicked on the "more information" arrow on the window that comes up. The explanation to the crashes was:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: daorigins.exe
Application Version: 1.1.9363.0
Fault Module Name: dsound.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000

THIS FIXED MY CRASH PROBLEM USING VISTA + CREATIVE (AUDIO) + ATI

I googled dsound.dll to be sure of what it was and yeah its a directsound file.
I found out that with my Auzentech X-fi Forte soundcard (which uses Creative X-Fi chip) comes a program called Creative ALchemy. This program "restores hardware accelerated audio so that you can enjoy EAX effects and 3D Audio when playing DirectSound 3D games in Microsoft Windows Vista".

So Im guessing that there is some sort of bug with EAX+DSound 3D while using Creative + Vista.
So I opened ALchemy and pressed "Add" and I entered "C:\\\\GAMES\\\\Dragon Age" into "Use Game Path", and selected "Install into Sub Folder" which is "bin_ship" (the folder where all the other game .dll files are located).
For my sound card the settings were 4 then 25 then 128 from the start, then hit OK -> move the game from left side to the right with the arrows.
EAX + D3D is now enabled for that game and I haven't had any crashes since, however my game has dropped to 0-1 fps at some random points, Im guessing where I would have crashes normally.

One thing I have not heard ANYONE talk about in this thread is what chipset they have on their motherboard. This can be critical for finding the source of the problems, since it could be as simple as Radeon users with an Intel XXX chipset have the problem, while those who are on a full AMD system do not. I myself am running on an AMD 790GX based system, and with the base Radeon 3300 graphics and onboard sound, I have not had a SINGLE crash under Windows 7 64 bit.

So, for those with the problem, please be very specific about what you have in the system. What chipset on the motherboard, onboard sound or Creative Buggy-Labs sound, processor, etc. And, don't forget to mention what drivers, operating system(include 32 bit or 64 bit), and so on.

For the game, also mention your exact settings. I am using medium and medium with AA turned off, running at 1024x768 due to the low end graphics I am using at the moment. In theory, I have a Radeon 4890 on the way, but it hasn't shown up yet.

What issues does DAO have about Radeon? I'm a radeon 4870 user and I have got no problem so far. Win 7, 1920x1080, AF 16x, all the in-game option are set their highest except for AA, which is set MSAA 4x..

Ok Im still having crashes today, guess I didn't fix my problem, I haven't been using AA but I had Catalyst AI on Standard, gonna try to disable it now.

I haven't overclocked my pc anything and Im using a Lian-Li chassi with a lot of cooling.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA790X-UD4 Motherboard (so AMD790X chipset).

AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition 940, 3400 MHz

Gigabyte ATI 4890 1GDDR5 gfx card, (used 9.7+9.10+9.11+9.2+9.3 and currently 9.6 drivers)

4 GB Corsair XMS2 CM2X2048-8500C5.

Windows Vista Business 64 bit (had same crashes in Win 7 when testing)

Auzentech X-Fi™ Forte 7.1 (have updated drivers)

As for the game settings, I have High graphics with AA turned off and 1920x1200.

I've played many games that demands a lot from computers.

Going to disable catalyst and see what happens.

I have a Radeon X1950 Pro and the game looks beautiful ... but my computer keeps locking up during character creation.

Anyone else having this problem? I either have to hard reboot or I get a blue screen saying that my device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. I've installed the most updated driver (9.11 Catalyst).

Any tips? :( This sucks.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have info that might help. I was playing in Vista on a GTX 260 and the game ran without any problems at all. I upgraded to Win7 64-bit with an ATI HD5870, and that's when my problems cropped up. Crashes every 5-15 minutes. I finally fixed the crashing by :

1. Disabling ATI HD Audio in Device Manager (I have a sound card, and also can use onboard sound anyway)
2. Turning off Catalyst AI in CCC.

I did not have to underclock, turn off any in-game audio features, disable anti-aliasing, etc. Playing on absolute max settings.
I'm not sure which of the two solutions above (or maybe it was both) fixed the crashing for me, but I was just so happy things got resolved that I didn't bother going back to figure out which one did it for me.

Note: I never had the Ostegar crashing problem, only frequent intermittent lock-ups, so this solution may not help with that particular error.

Other specs are: C2Q 9550 @ 3.6GHz, 4GB Ram, P5Q Deluxe, Catalyst 9.11
