Her system specs are:
Windows XP sp3 - OS
Intel Quad 2 6600 @2.4ghz - Processor
3.25gb Ram - Memory
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT - Graphics Card
She just bought Dragon Age Origins and installed it on comp. She is having graphic issues right from Character Creation. Trying to touble shoot I set all settings to lowest.
What is happening is that the screen is either:
1. Getting transparent red, green, blue overlays over game graphics to the point of not seeing through to actual game screen.
2. Getting Solid color cutouts covering the screen entirely.
The game is unplayable atm.
Read through thread and seemed most were having probs with other ATI cards .. didn't see posts about 2600 card specificlly.
Anyone else have any idea what could be issue here? I believe system specs are within game requirements. Would be grateful for any help on this.

PMisty, there are a number of issues reported with ATI, but they mainly deal with slowdowns, stuttering, hitching, and outright crashing. You'll likely have more luck making a new thread, noting 'Graphic corruption' in the title. Few notes, best I can do...
What version of the Catalyst drivers are they using with the card? Most graphic issues can be traced to the drivers. Second, is their DirectX up to date? That's usually the other culprit. Do the graphics start fine, then corrupt? If so, might be overheating (unlikely given you note it happens at character creation). Latest Catalyst set (9.11) is available at www.ati.com, click on "Catalyst" in the corner, and that should take you to the download page. Make sure you grab the right version for your OS.
I'd look at drivers first. However, if all this doesn't help, I'd really recommend starting your own post...it kind of derails this one, since the symptoms are different.
Good luck!

I downclocked the graphic card using the catalyst (9.11) and set the fans at 60%. Now I've been playing for forty minutes and the problem seems solved, but I'm keeping my hopes low and my fingers crossed.
Is there any news from ATI, Bioware or EA of a more elegant solution? If nothing else, is quite tiresome to continuously change the fans setting

Those two links show the issue many people including myself are having at the moment. The most common thing about them all is the ATI cards and the location of the crash Ostogar. I have been unable to play it much at all, due to the problem. Some help is badly needed. Even if to say that you are looking into it to see what is causing it.

My 4870 never had any problem under Vista and my 5850 doesn't have any problems under Window 7. So, it's not a driver problem and it's not a card problem. I'd suggest maybe a power supply problem? An overheating problem in the case?

Maybe better case ventilation... a fan pushing cold air in near the video card so that you're blowing cool air rather than warm/hot case air across the GPU heatsink.

That said, look into the ATI profile manager. You can use that to save CCC settings, including fan speeds and clock speeds, and then launch an exectible. I set all my games up that way so that I can customize settings and launch them by right clicking on the taskbar.

Maybe you just need better case ventilation so that the fans are blowing cold air across the video card coolers instead of already-warm air?
That said, there's at least a crutch to make your life a little easier regarding settings... Look into the Profile Manager. You can use it to set video and overclock settings, and then launch an executible. All of my games have a profile so that I can customize my settings for each game and launch them all from right clicking on my taskbar.

Oh, and I've yet to reach Ostagar on this new machine. I will post as soon as I got there and, if the problem doesn't occur, I can post my settings for everyone who has a 5800 series card and incurs in the same, annoying problem.

It only happens with this game. I can run any other game maxed out without a hitch.
Seems to be a memory leak...Does anyone know if Bioware are looking into a patch?
I really want to play this but this system instability is unacceptable.

However - my rig is rather old, and it may not work for you. Becareful with it, and decide whether or not you want to try it. This fix was rather hard to find but it eventually solved a lot of problems. If it helps then all good, here it is:
1) Download this -> http://code.bastart.eu.org/csapatch/
2) Enter safe mode.
3) Run the tool you downloaded.
4) Go back to normal windows and play your game. See if it helps.
The person who told me of this fix mentioned this too:
This means his X1950 is an AGP model. ATI has dropped support for the X1xxx series as of 9.3 As for the AGP part..
The reason he's getting crashes is that ATI oh-so conveniently added SSE2 calls to the drivers after about 7.9 or something, I forget. SSE2 calls the Athlon XP processors can't handle. This makes your computer freak out and crash in all 3d apps eventually.

My Windows XP with SP3 is running on a system with AMD X3-720, ATI 4670, AMD 785 chipset and 4G of RAM.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall ATI drivers. I have also underclocked my ATI 4670 GPU. However, the games still kept on crashing to the desktop. From a solution of another player, I got the inspiration and devise the following method. I have been running DAO for over 8 hours without a crash. You may try it as it does not require any software reinstallation.
1. Start Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.
2. Start DAO launcher. Click on Play. Get pass the intro movies to the main menu screen and stop at there.
3. Switch back to Windows Task Manager by pressing Alt, Tab.
4. On Windows Task Manager, click on the Process tab.
5. Locate process - daorigins.exe. You can click on the CPU column heading so that the process with the highest CPU loading appears on top. daorigins.exe should apear at the top.
6. Right click on daorigins.exe. Select "Set Affinity". Disable all CPU's except CPU0.
7. Switch back to Dragon Age Origins by pressing Alt, Tab.
8. Start actually playing DAO. See if this method can give you a stable run and solve your crashing problem.
9. You may try to re-enable CPU1 if you get a stable run for more than, say, 30 minutes. I have tried to re-enable CPU2, but DAO crashes right after that. So now I stay playing DAO with only two cores.
The above procedure is for XP. You may devise similar steps for Vista or Windows 7 systems. If this can solve your problem, please post a reply such that me and others can share your joy.

Downclocking the CPU probably does the same thing.
Upgrading the CPU fan and/or having better case ventilation would be the real fix in this case.

I followed the advice given on the 14th page of this thread and used RivaTuner to underclock my video card, and that seems to have resolved the problem for now, no crashes since I did that. It's not a perfect solution, but at least I can play the game now, and I don't seem to be experiencing any serious performance problems due to the underclock (I didn't have to dial it down much to get it stable). RivaTuner warns me that my drivers aren't officially supported, but I just click through the message: haven't had any problems.
For the record, I'm running a Radeon x1950 with 256 meg video RAM, Catalyst 9.11, Windows XP SP3, Athlon 3800+, 2 gig system RAM, etc. etc. etc.
I don't believe my particular problem to be due to heat like Klaxxer's, as I run many other games including some that are at least as taxing and none of them seem to have the same problem.
Good luck to everyone else trying to troubleshoot this problem, here's hoping for a patch or some other better solution.

I started this thread and I finally finished my first origin run through with a GTX 275. The on ly issues I had after installing the new card were slow zone load times. I am absolutely speechless that the ATI issues are still not fixed. I feel for those of you still trying to resolve these issues and shame on both Bio/EA and AMD/ATI. This is absolutely unacceptable considering its been an issue from day one yet not one single patch has addressed any of it.
We don't care. This thread was to help people and it was helpful since we got it working. You went and got another card and that fix worked for you. I'm still running the game as I posted on page 14 and it works great with no problems. Thanks for starting the thread but you gave up even after we figured out how to work it so I'm sorry if you feel butt hurt due to dishing out more money.
