I had bought dragon age today and attempted to put it on my computer but it told me that my video card was no good.
I have an Acer Aspire 5100-5023
AMD turion 64x2mobile Technology
up to 512 mb ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 (I think this is way too low) hyper memory
160HDD
2GB HD
I had read somewhere that you can change the drivers on the video cards based on compatability but in my search I had found nothing. I have a bad feeling I will not be able to play this game until I buy a new computer in a year or two.
If anyone has the answer please let me know

yes thats probably about 10% of the power you need to run DA graphically

I found that if I downgraded the resolution to say 1440X900 then put back to 1680X1050 it runs smooth as silk till it loads a new area. Looks like it could be some buffering issue.
Oh yeah im running Catalyst 9.6

I've heard there's bugs in the DLC & many have trouble with them. Try to find one of these DLC Threads for assistance.caneker wrote...

Ouch! I know how it feels to do stuff like that. & it can be a bugger trying to watch out for it because the Case Fan's output direction can't always be eyeballed. Sometimes ya gotta plug the Case Fan in the puder & actually feel the air with your hand as it runs to make sure it's goin the right way. I recently did this with 3 Case Fans that came with my Case pre-installed for my new puder build partially to see what they got, power & noise-wise, & partially to check their orientation to make sure the Manufacturers stuck them in right. (Especially the rear Case Fan, to make sure it was correctly set to Outtake.)AlanC9 wrote...
I was having issues, but they turned out to be caused by temperature spikes. Logs showed that the game only crashed when GPU temp went over 90. When I opened the case I found that when I was doing some maintenance work I put the main case fan in backward and borked my airflow. D'Oh!

I'm goin nuts on the Case Fans on my new puder build after bein alarmed at how hot this game can get a puder. I think everyone should.Oddball1 wrote...
I run this game on two Radeon 3870's and don't have problems. The key thing, is that my Antec P182 case is loaded with fans keeping the inside of the case and my videocards cool.

I've had DA:O since December '09, and I've had the same black screen/freeze/hard lock problem as many other people here. I just wanted to weigh in with my own experiences with this problem, to see if it helps anyone else, and also to see if anyone can help me.
I'll do a quick rundown of my system specs, just to get that out of the way:
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+
GPU: Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB
Memory: 4 GB Patriot DDR2 800
Mainboard: MSI K9A2 Platinum (790FX chipset)
PSU: Xclio Greatpower 700w
And I run every other game I have (including Mass Effect 2, World of Warcraft, Source games, Mirror's Edge (with PhysX turned off), Grand Theft Auto V, etc., etc.) at 1920x1080 perfectly fine, with great performance, even with graphics settings turned all the way up, or nearly all the way up on GTAIV. My CPU idles around 40 degrees C (I'd like it to idle a few degrees lower), and my video card idles at 45 degrees C. I haven't had any issues with cooling/ventilation so far, even though I wish my computer ran a little cooler. I don't think cooling's too much of an issue, even with DA:O, which I'll get to in a little bit...
So as I was saying, I've had this freezing/black screen/lock-up problem with DA:O as others have described in this thread. The issue began while attempting to play the game for the first time. I played for maybe 10 seconds after the initial cutscene, then it locked up and I had to reboot. At first, I tried installing a newer driver (I think it was Catalyst 9.12 at that time), and that didn't help. I also tried disabling one of my CPU cores, and that didn't work, either. Then I saw the underclocking fix in this thread, and it's been working for me ever since, with only a few places in the game where I notice framerate reduction.
However, I'd like to know if there is a more permanent solution. I hate having to underclock my card (Radeon HD 3870) every time I want to play this game. It wouldn't be too much of an issue with me if I could reset the video card's idle clock speed, but apparently, when using Riva Tuner to underclock, this sets the idle speed to whatever speed the card is underclocked, so it keeps running at 700 MHz (the speed I set it to for underclocking in order to play DA:O) even if there isn't any GPU activity. Normally, it idles at 300 MHz with a core temperature of around 45C, but at 700 MHz all the time, the core temperature stays at 55C.
So I guess my question here is: does anyone know if there's a way to restore my card's idle clock speeds with Riva Tuner or any other programs? So far, the only way I know how is by restarting the computer. And I can't use ATI Overdrive to lower the clock speed below 777 MHz; the only way for me to go below this clock is with Riva Tuner...same deal with the memory clock. I know it's only a 10 degree increase in idle temperature, but I'd prefer not to have it idle up there all the time. The fan is forced to run faster, too, which kind of sucks.
But the underclocking "fix" allowed me to play through the game once, without any crashes or lockups.
I'd like to share a few more things with anyone who is interested in hearing about them: I started a new game up a few weeks ago after updating DA: O to 1.03 and my graphics driver (to Catalyst 10.3), and an interesting thing happened: I started DA:O without underclocking, just to see if anything had changed, and strangely enough, I was able to play the game for at least 2 hours, going through Ostagar (I've never had any problems with Ostagar in particular, as some others have), into the Wilds, and back. I exited without crashing. A few hours later, I tried again, also without underclocking, but the game froze and my computer locked up within 5 seconds. I haven't tried this again, because I know what will happen... so I am back to underclocking... One thing I forgot to mention: back when I got this game, before I discovered the underclocking fix here, another thing I attempted to do was to update my PhysX drivers (someone suggested it, even if using a non-nVidia card). That allowed me to play for a while without locking up, as well. But, that didn't last either. I don't know what that means, but I thought I'd share that with the community here, in case anyone has had similar issues, or if anyone understands how that could happen. After reading another post here: http://social.biowar...69203/1#2334887 , I'm thinking about using a driver cleaner program to uninstall Catalyst and then reinstall, to see if that works.
I'm about to try what Homie10 suggested at the bottom of page 16 of this thread, which is to disable my ATI HD Audio through the device manager, and also the Catalyst AI in CCC. I'll post again if that works.
Sorry about the lengthy post, and for going off on a bit of a tangent about Riva Tuner and resetting idle clocks, but this thread is probably one of the few I've found on this issue that has been around for such a long time and has a lot of input from so many people. Thanks!

I read somewhere that certain games, such as Oblivion, were designed with Catalyst AI in mind, and require it to be enabled for some reason.
Anyway, I might re-enable Catalyst AI just to see if Dragon Age screws up again with it enabled. If it does, then I guess it's been the culprit, for me, at least, all along. If not, then it was because I had ATI's HD Audio driver enabled when I wasn't even using it. Either way, disabling one or both of these things seems to have helped. If it doesn't last, I'll just go back to underclocking...
So I can confirm that Homie10's suggestion worked for me, at least I'm pretty sure it did. If this can help someone else, that's great!
