Well at least now we have a non Ostregar crash area. I have a similar issue, it played fine for hours until I got to ostregar, now it crashes in that area after about 45 seconds. All drivers and DX updated, rolled back, etc. Please, Admin, throw us a bone here!

HD3870 here as well, Also crashes to black screen at Ostregar, seconds after talking to Alister. I Don't run Catalyst control center,I'm using basic drivers that came with the OS, tried upgrading/downgrading the drivers, the problem persists.

It seems that the ATI Radeon HD 3800 family has a lot of issues, as almost every thread mentions those cards numerous times. I am running a 4890 and have had no issues at all, but I can sympathize.

Im running a 4850, tryed rolling back drivers, the works. Same result. Unplayable game with a big fat "ATI Radeon" logo on the back of my DA case, non CE edition by the way. I've concluded that Windows 7 could be the culprit. Its a new OS so.. Thats all I could come up with. Spent 3 hours trying work arounds I don't have the will left tonight to reinstall XP just to try and play this game and lose my new OS. Bah,

It's not Windows 7. I'm still on XP Pro SP3 and have the same issue.

I spent 45 minutes on the telephone today with Tier 2 ATI support and they were unaware of the issue. EA support told me it was the ATI driver and ATI was working on a fix. ATI told me it was the first they heard of it...

The thread I referred to has a admin response to a crash issue from earlier today, hopefully he'll look at it tomorrow.

Just a Quick Update, I set everything to the lowest, turned off everything, and set it to the lowest windowed resolution, went past the area where it crashes, it ran smoothly, I entered the wastelands or what ever they're called, and set my options back up and the game has been running smoothly so far, its possible one of the settings is glitched on that particular location, though I can't tell which one exactly since i set everything to absolute minimum.

ATI seems to have som serious Issues with the 8570 seriers of card in Windows 7. Had an Nvidia 8800GT before I got this new card and it orked well (albeit slowly) with games that the 5870 has serious problems with.

17th seems to be the date when new drivers will be available that will solve a few problems...

not to nitpick, but 8570 series does not exist.

I have spent about a half hour in Ostigar without any problems so far.

My setup:

AMD Phenom II 940

ATI 4870 512MB

Windows 7 N 64bit

4GB RAM

I'm current with windows updates and the only drivers I had to install were the ATI 9.10 and my creative xfi gamer.

I hope to stay problem free.

I tried this as well as disabling all the online upload settings (which I had heard fixed someones issue) and still crashes in about 30 seconds.

I have done all this and then some. I am very frustrated at this point and not one single word here from bioware. Baiscally I paid for a CE delivery on release day and currently its an over priced boat anchor and not a very good one at that. I have the PS3 rental on its way and can't wait to see the issues I run into with that. Lots of console complaints on both sides.

I just wish they would acknowledge this. They put this forum section up earlier today and they (bioware) knows that EA tech support is a laughing stock. This has certainly killed the hype for me and if they don't fix it soon they can refund me my money. I understand that game issues happen but to have many people with the same issue with a 1/2 hour of game play is ridiculous.

I expect far better from bioware but then I do expect this type of crap from EA.

Well, to be honest, I really don't think this game was worth the trouble of me getting it, the store I pre-ordered at didn't order enough CE editions themselves, so they somehow managed to be out of stock, so they kept sending me from one of their stores to another (best buy) for three damn hours before I managed to find a copy, this stuff shouldn't happen, pre-order is a same thing as sale, as you're paying for a product, what's the point if they don't have it, you know?

Plus, EA's got a crap record and no respect for the consumers, not to mention that they've been practically boning their costumers as every game that cames out with an EA logo recently seems to have trouble with ATI cards, I wonder how much Nvidia helped grease that little cog into the mix, like the crap with SHIFT where most ATI cards get the exact same performance on ultra high and ultra low because only some 25% of the card's power is used, makes you wonder how that little gem whent past the quality control, when components listed on recommended requirements aren't even enough for minimum settings.

I'm not gonna even mince words, this crap is why I pirate, the only reason I got this game was for the cloth map, the very idea of puting money on a game with an EA logo on it makes me cringe until my gums bleed.

ATI 3870, Intel 8400 Dual Core, 4GB DDR2, 7 fans in my case (everything seems fine on temps), 750W power supply (should be plenty, only mention it because some others mentioned power).

- I tried disabling both of my sound cards.

- Installed 9.6 to 9.10 drivers.

- Forced ATI Catalyst to use all performace options with minimal quality (also tried it with all max settings.)

-- have a dual boot system with 32 bit and 64 bit OS's

- Tried windowed mode and full screen mode

- Tried lowest resolutions and highest

- Made sure all drivers (other then the video) were up to date

- tried compatability modes, running as administrator, etc

- tried turning everything off in msconfig, playing game with no sound, and minimal services running.

- made sure ALL power saving options were turned off

Doesn't matter what i try. Sometimes i log in and play for 5 seconds and sometimes i can run around for 2-5 minutes before it crashes and i have to reboot.

Funny thing is, even AFTER a crash i'll make a new character (have 3 already) and i can play for a couple hours getting my new guy through the beginning areas. No issues. No crashes. Works like a charm. As soon as i hit Ostragar, forget it. This is when all the random crashing begins.

I'm no boasting my ego, just trying to help and i know a crapload about computers. Been gaming for 30+ years. Ran into numerous issues and know most of the tweaking techiniques etc.

This issue is obviously not one i think any of us will fix (i'm hoping someone does though). It is either a game issue or a driver issue in my opiinon as most have noted. I'm completely out of things to try at this point and the game is 100% umplayable for me unless i want to re-boot my computer 30 times an hour to get a couple mobs killed and saving after every single fight.

*added note - Gonna try installing my nVidia card off another system and see if i have the same issues (this will answer something about the ATI hopefully being the cause). See what happens.....

I've got the same problem though, but I'm in the wilds outside of ostragar when it kills the video for me. I've got a 3870, 9.10 drivers.

Same, mine happens outside or even if i'm lucky to get through it, in the next area.

Update to my above post.....

I've tried a few more things....

-disabling my internet before i run the game
-turning AA off in game
-turning resolution down to 1024x768 (normally i play in wide screen 1440x900)
-leaving it in 1440x900 and turning graphics half way down (looks liek crap and shouldn't have to do that)

I FINALLY was able to get through wiht no crashes by changing rsolution to 1024x768 and putting ALL settings to the lowest textures etc with 0 AA. (had sound turned back on and internet).

I quit playing though cause like that the game looks like crap and there is no way i'm playing it like that. I love a good story, but not that much. Plenty of other games i can play instead...like BG2 even or NWN or ME! Come on Bioware, get your act together and post on the crashes. I think it is an ATI issue myself, but an official response would be nice.
