I just did this (below), and everyone here should do it as well.

I suggest filling out an official problem question by logging in with your account at the official support site here: http://help.dragonage.com/

Click on "E-mail Us" and fill out a problem report. You will get an incident report number and be able to view an official response from that site.

The 3870 seems to be the card most people are having this specific issue with, the location is usually Ostragar. Hopefully in the AM when the support staff shows up to read all the flames they'll work on a fix, In the meantime, I'm saving my pennies for a newer card. What brand I buy will depend on how soon this gets fixed.

I'm running a 4890 on the latest beta drivers and having no issues. Could it jsut be an issue with older cards perhaps?

3870 is not that old, Hell, even considering its slightly dated, it's still an enthusiast level card, besides, I doubt its the hardware's inability to fill the demand, as my 3870 doesn't even use its full potential on this game.

I agree, I bought mine a little over a year ago, there's no reason it shouldn't support this game. I have a suspicion we'll see a driver fix for this model.

2 comments, i noted above after my testing that i could play on completely low settings. Eh..false. Crashed on low/low as well.

With that noted, i played Crysis, Aion, and plenty other newish/new games with my 3870 and on most i have settings on high. There is nothing wrong with the model of card. The 3870 is still a fine video card and Dargon Age should have no issues playing on it..even at high settings.

As i stated earlier, i can play ALL the beginning starter zones etc on high settings with no issues. Yet once i hit the wilds and other things in the area...crash. Random at that.....sometimes after 5 minutes and sometimes after 5 seconds. Never takes longer then that though. Wouldnt be as bad if i could just restart the game, but i have to reboot windows each time as well.

Even after a crash (in case you think the card is hot) i can immediately go play for a couple hours making a new character...until i get back out to the Ritual area again.

Really sucks......

Same problems as everyone else, got to the arena where I was going to talk to the guy (don't remember his name, the guy who used to be a templar who makes the mage mad) and from that point on the game started crashing. Hope we here something soon.

ati 4850 here updated with 9.10, working fine, pretty smooth. has anyone tried to turn down/off catalyst ai in the CCC? those are optimizations for radeon cards, might work for a temp fix

A friend of mine had crashed at Duncan, also had extremely slow play. He thought he has issues with shadows, but no option were to turn them off. I checked the .ini's, and found, that one of the ini's "Documents/Bioware/DragonAge/Settings/DragonAge.ini" has an option "EnableShadows=1". I told him to set it to 0, and miracuously, the game did not crash at all :D

Yeah myself and others have tried it with no catalyst installed at all, just the straight driver, issue persists.

Finally got to where I played for the past 6 hours without a single crash. Now that I've logged out it may start back later.

I just uninstalled all Catalyst software/drivers, uninstalled Dragon Age.Downloaded 9.6 Drivers(the ones without Control Center), reinstalled the game and downloaded the newest PhysX driver from Nvidea(Someone posted the link in 1 of these threads somewhere). They said they were newer than the ones on disc.Started a new game and made it all the way through the wilds and into the next town(Forget the name, starts with an L).

Thought maybe it was because I didn't log off till now after reinstall.May start crashing when i play again, hopefully not.

Not saying it will work for everyone, but it worked for me and i have the same issues at the rest of you. ATI 3870.

Been playing a couple hours now, no crashes. All settings on high in game.

Same here.  I just migrated to ATI from nvidia for the first time due to the 5850 being the best card at its price point.  Appears to be an issue with HD3x -4x cards.

Just a Quick Update, I set everything to the lowest, turned off everything, and set it to the lowest windowed resolution, went past the area where it crashes, it ran smoothly."

I tried this as well as disabling all the online upload settings (which I had heard fixed someones issue) and still crashes in about 30 seconds.

I have done all this and then some. I am very frustrated at this point and not one single word here from bioware. Baiscally I paid for a CE delivery on release day and currently its an over priced boat anchor and not a very good one at that. I have the PS3 rental on its way and can't wait to see the issues I run into with that. Lots of console complaints on both sides.

I just wish they would acknowledge this. They put this forum section up earlier today and they (bioware) knows that EA tech support is a laughing stock. This has certainly killed the hype for me and if they don't fix it soon they can refund me my money. I understand that game issues happen but to have many people with the same issue with a 1/2 hour of game play is ridiculous.

I expect far better from bioware but then I do expect this type of crap from EA.

Well, to be honest, I really don't think this game was worth the trouble of me getting it, the store I pre-ordered at didn't order enough CE editions themselves, so they somehow managed to be out of stock, so they kept sending me from one of their stores to another (best buy) for three damn hours before I managed to find a copy, this stuff shouldn't happen, pre-order is a same thing as sale, as you're paying for a product, what's the point if they don't have it, you know?

Plus, EA's got a crap record and no respect for the consumers, not to mention that they've been practically boning their costumers as every game that cames out with an EA logo recently seems to have trouble with ATI cards, I wonder how much Nvidia helped grease that little cog into the mix, like the crap with SHIFT where most ATI cards get the exact same performance on ultra high and ultra low because only some 25% of the card's power is used, makes you wonder how that little gem whent past the quality control, when components listed on recommended requirements aren't even enough for minimum settings.

I'm not gonna even mince words, this crap is why I pirate, the only reason I got this game was for the cloth map, the very idea of puting money on a game with an EA logo on it makes me cringe until my gums bleed.

Thats nice, go on a DEVELOPER forum and tell them you pirate.  Sure go right to the source, the people that sacrifice and put their blood and sweat into a product for people to enjoy, and give em a big old middle finger and tell them you steal it.  It doesnt matter if you didnt steal THIS game, i doubt they would think anymore highly of you.

I don't understand this concept, i doubt you have the testicular fortitude to walk into a store and lift a game by hand, yet somehow its not stealing if you steal it online in the privacy of your own home.  I have an ATI card and more than a few EA games, all are running great including this one.

It is definitely a video card issue. I removed both of my Radeon 3870 video cards, uninstalled all the catalyst stuff, installed a Geforce 8600 from my older computer, and there are no crashes at all. I hope they get a fix for this soon, so I can use my Radeon's crossfired again and all my graphic settings at full blast.

Given that this is a 3800-4800 problem, it looks like one particular section is overloading the insufficient VRMs on those cards. Has anyone tried turning on Vsync?
