Same problem... 3870 with crashes in Ostsagar. Would someone from Bioware just give us a, "We hear you and we're working on it."? It would make me feel much better about all of this.

I really urge everyone to open a support ticket at http://help.dragonage.com . That's where support will come from, not the forums.

And that does absolutely nothing. I just got off the telephone again with over an hour of time to get told that I need to manually uninstall all the files and if that doesnt fix it to call back. I was also told that they dont read the forums and this guys job was to help me with my problem not everyone else's. Great tech support as usual EA and the problem will go unanswered as usual and not get a fix for a long time if at all.

Why do you think it will do absolutely nothing? Clearly the forums aren't the place for a solution, and it doesn't sound like your phone calls are going very well... why don't you try the support system that was built for this game, that uses your account, and allows you to track your tickets?

Yea because that has obviously worked. I have 3 days wirth tracked tickets with one reply which was the first episode on Monday. Why don't you offer some real solid suggestions instead of assuming that i have not gone the correct route as well as any other routes? I have exhausted every single route and the last tech at EA said telephone support is the best option and they can look at the tickets and the logs from there.

Thanks for the reply. I was expecting the usual bug fixes needed when a new game comes out. I've been a fan of Bioware for some time now but the number of glitches I've reading about is surprising to me. From all accounts we have been reading it seemed as though BW had done a lot of testing with the game and it was relatively bug free. Alas, it was not to be. BW bit off a lot trying to release a new game plus start up a new forum site. I still don't have a game yet and am trying to prepare myself for possible troubles I may have.

Changing the Affinity to one processor did not work for me and I still crashed. Also to note, once I reboot and tried to switch it back the Affinity automatically switches back to duo core.

Which is normal, without a normal closing of the computer all system related changes revert back to old settings.

try the following. Run the game in XP compatibility mode, affinity 1 core (only select Core 0), save and reboot. then start the game.

edit : ill read back tomorrow on this topic anyway. sleep time now

brace yourself...long list lol

So far:
Tried ATI CCC drivers 9.6-9.10 ---attempted yesterday
Emptied temp folder
ended all background tasks
Tried another vid card and it's drivers (taken from BF's system lol)
lowered hardware acceleration from "full" to "basic"
then uninstalled the game using the old administrator account then reinstall the game using a new windows admin acct.
spoken with Tech support (EA) three times
and finally....
Setting the affinity of daorigins.exe to use only one processor core

no luck on these attempts atm >.<

Actually I've noticed if I am logged out while playing the original issue I had with 'freeze/crash' is nonexistent. Maybe my case is unique, but maybe the constant updating Dragon Age does with our character profile is causing problems - especially when its 'logged in' but cannot communicate with the server.

I tried using a single core and it did seem to work for a while (7 or 8 minutes) but I ended up crashing in the same way still in Ostragar. So no luck with me taking that approach. I think I'm done with this game for a while, this is too much work being put into making my product even function as intended.

I'm in live chat with tec hsupport now but I'll have to try that approach.  I have the "auto-login" running lol

Here's something that I don't understand. I run a VisionTek HD OC 3870 which is doing this whole crashing thing anywhere from 5 seconds from the time I load in to a couple of minutes but never any longer than that. I've tried all of the user fixes on here to no avail. I asked my friend who is using the same card (same manufacturer/type/everything) and hes having not a problem in the world. He's running the same OS, the same driver version, everything's the same. Then I got the random idea to swap out cards with my dads computer who is also using a 3870 only his is made by Sapphire.

I've played quite a few hours with that card with NO PROBLEMS. I used the same drivers same installs everything just with a different manufacturer of essentially the same card. WTF!!!! I don't get it. My card is fine and runs everything from Crysis to CoD to WoW perfectly fine. I'm sure this is going to only add more questions instead of answers but I figured I'd throw my experience so far out there and see if anyone had any ideas.

Hmm, that's interesting! My card is a VisonTek as well... hopefully that's not it though, because I really don't want to buy a new video card. Grrrrr...

Mine is a Diamond. Could be something specific to the manufacturer, but it's not just the VisionTek.

Given that some Nvidia users are also reporting the same crash, it's probably not the video card alone that is causing the issues. Some people have been reporting spikes in processor use just prior to the crash. It even happens with graphic options turned way down. I'm going to experiment with throttling performance in my BIOS on my ASUS P5E3 MB to see if that has any effect on stopping these spikes. I think I've already tried everything else to no avail.

Hi Syrellaris.  Thanks for taking time out to check into this.  There are also a lot of us that had been posting in another thread before the tech support area was created.  Here's the link.
http://social.biowar.../9/index/81743/

I'm almost certain that the issue has something to do with the video card(s).  I have two Diamond Viper Radeon 3870 HD cards crossfired.  I was having the exact same problem crashing in Ostagar, and couldn't fix it no matter what I tried.  Then I took out both video cards, cannibalized my older computer and took the EVGA Geforce 8600 GT card and installed it, and then started up the game...  The intro video sequence was choppy like when was having the crashes, but when I started the game I didn't crash at all.  When I logged out and changed settings for the video card to a higher setting (still not at high enough setting I want, I want my Radeon cards back), and looged back in, the intro videos were totally smooth and not choppy anymore.  I've not gotten any more crashes since then.

Everyone having the game freeze problem, when you first start the game, and the intro video is playing with the sword going through the dragon and the bloody dragon etc, is it really choppy video?

Yes, but only at the intros. Not sure if having the Steam version matters on that end.

I am having a similar problem but it is crashing my whole machine...it's acting like I'm losing power. I recently bought ATI 4870 and have the newest drivers. I havn't had this problem with any other game but it just keeps crashing my whole system. it's not my psu and I'm not overheating. lets me play for a while then my whole machine just shuts down. wife has the 3870 cards and isn't having the problem...this sucks

Got the game to run for about 6 hours last night and about 4 hours today. Now all of a sudden back to the black screen and after rebooting I tried to load a saved game(Right after I added Shale to the party)and now it won't let me load any of the damn saves.

Says I must be logged into the account that has the downloaded content, which I am logged into.Haven't changed a damn thing.Still shows up under my installed downloads but everything there says unauthorized. This is total Bull...Fix the damn game Bioware!Stop answering so many posts except for the Black screen Crashing posts!

Add me to the list of those having problems. I'm running a Radeon 3870, and also get the nice black screen of death when I go into Ostagar. I've tried changing the settings to low, turning off V-sync, rolling back to the 9.6 drivers and forward to 9.10, and nothing has worked at all.

At this point I don't care who is at fault, I just want something done about it. What was the point of pre-ordering if I can't play it.

My wife has a GeCube HD3870 and is stuck in the Dalish Camp. When she loads the save game the character is like looking at the edge of the camp and a couple NPCs are standing near she can run forward and back a little no problem as soon as she starts turning her view boom black screen. We still hear sounds and it seems the game is still running but the video is off. We actually get a message from her HD monitor that the video signal was lost. She has a Core 2 Dual and I just ordered her a Core 2 Quad (like I have) we'll see if that helps.

I on the other hand have an AT x1950 with the Core 2 Quad and mine seems to be running fine.  I have made it way past Ostragar (the tower fight and all?)
