Also, anyone tried windowed gameplay? I've been doing it for a bit now and the crash hasn't happened yet.
Thanks Demonic

There is an simple explenation for that really.
The visiontek HD OC 3870 comes with overclocked as a stock. Depending on the brand, some of them slighty overlclock the cards to boost performance. Sapphire, delivers there own stock which is, in most cases not Oced.
A lot of problems in games arise from videocards that are slightly oced. That is why experienced users, sometimes recommend to lower the values of your videocard. Switching for a different card is basicly the same thing.
P.s. I am a builder due to the group specifications, that ive set to builder for the Toolkit and mod community. I do not work for tech support or bioware
So do you think that lowering the clocks on the video card back to ATI's stock will fix this all? I've plaid every other game I own, from TF2 to Empire Total War to Mass Effect with the card at its stock settings (slightly OC'ed). If you think slowing the clocks down will fix it, I might as well give it a shot...
Only try it if you have experience with overclocking really. If you are
not familiar with the pc tot he point of Ocing a cpu or gpu, then dont
try it.
But yeah, it might work.

Here's the workaround and the problem.
The combo of ATI 3800, multi-core CPUs, and DAO are poison.
I have a Xeon Quad 2.5 and a Diamond 3850. I disabled core affinity for all but processor 0 and it ran for an hour before it locked up (without a black screen!).
I disabled it through the Task Manager via right-click on the open app while I was still on the DAO Options screen.

Already discussed on pages 4 and 5 of the thread. Worked for 1 person that I saw, not for the rest. We mostly crashed eventually.

I tried that as well (Intel E8400 and a 3870), and it didn't work for me.

It would be interesting to know what BRANDS of ATI cards are having the problem, not just if it is an ATI chip set.
I learned long ago that cheap vid cards work just fine for general computing use, but for Games, CAD, and other graphical intense programs you need to buy the expensive one. That $299.00 computer "loaded to the max!!" is not always the best choice. in other words, there is a reason why computers that seem to have the exact same specs are hundreds of dollars apart in price.

Maybe a silly question, but everyone did install directx off of the install disk, right?
For completeness, here are my system specs for those looking for common denominators.
AMD Phenom X4 9950 @ 2.8 GHz
4GB Patriat Viper Series @ 1066
Sapphire 4870x2 @ stock clocks
Catalyst 9.6
Motherboard: M3A79-T Deluxe - (SB750 chipset)
OS: XP 32-bit SP3
Another long shot, test your memory.

If you must buy ATI, or feel personally that ATI is better, then get the expensive one - Going cheap is not always better. As mentioned, this is probably a manufacture issue and not directly an ATI issue. Cheap cards take shortcuts on electronic components that can cause early failures, overheating, and improper voltage/current levels and they don't always implement the firmware properly.

1: Price does not always mean quality.
2: The card people have trouble with is mostly 3870, which, while it is two years old, was manufactured as top of the line Enthusiast level card, while the card does sell now for lower prices, not everyone purchased it now, you are esentially calling every component ever made crap because at some point it will be cheap.
Besides, Price alone is not the only thing that dictates a person's purchase choice, there are other elements which you didn't even consider, size, connection, power requirements, you're generalizing a problem based on something that has nothing to do with it, if this was a mass issue with the hardware level of the 38xx series, at this volume it would have been noticed sooner, Dragon Age is not that visually demanding, More than likely its an issue with the software, either from ATI or from Bioware side, after all, we can't all be cheap bastards with crappy PCs, can we?

What did you do to get it to work? Or did you never have the problem?
