Again folks, there are ATI card and Nvida cards that have the problem, and some that don't. I have a 3870, and I do. And yes, if you cared to read the mountains of posts behind this one, you'll see we have all done lots and lots and lots of troubleshooting. Thanks for nothing, eveyone who isn't having a problem and felt the need to share.

HOWEVER!

Devanshyr just posted this response received after a day upper level tech support with EA and got this direct email, not a form letter:

"It looks as though the issue you have submitted is more complex than it seemed initially. We require more time for investigation, but rest assured we are working hard to resolve your issue in a timely manner. We encourage you to update your incident with any additional information that might help us fix your problem faster."

I recommend anyone who has this particular issue to open a ticket here:

http://help.dragonage.com

...with your system info and a description of the problem. The more people they see have the problem, the faster they'll work to fix it.

What did you do to get it to work? Or did you never have the problem?

Never had the problem.  I run a tight ship on my PC all the time though.  The littlest things can make big problems with PCs, a big reason consoles are so popular.  With a console there is one hardware configuration to develop for, PCs on the other hand have a lot of different hardware configurations.  Then you add on to that the multitude of other stuff that people can install and you have the tech support nightmares you see for PCs.  Things will get resolved for you guys, someday I'm sure ;)  Bioware has a good track record fo support with their games, and they will want to get all you guys playing ASAP.  Development/bug fixing takes time though.  Keep reporting your bugs too!  I feel for you guys, but hang in there, take a break and come back to it after another patch or driver release.  And make sure your computers are running in tip top shape.  Get someone to help you out if you "know a guy."

That's nice to hear someone is responding! I've tried everything suggested at this point with no luck, so I'm looking forward to a patch, driver update, something, anything that solves the problem.

On the plus side, my girlfriend decided to come down for the weekend, so now I won't even have the opportunity to play... let's just hope they fix it by sunday night!

Not just a 3800 series problem - frequent crashes with a 4870 on a Phenom II 940 quad core with 4 gb ram and Win 7-64.

Troubleshooting has entailed trying every Catalyst driver version from 9.6 to the 9.11 beta, setting vid card back down to AMD spec, turning v-sync both on & off, trying video settings at every level, trying both logged in & logged out while in game, disabling & enabling screenshots, with and without AA, putting box fan up to open case blowing both in & out, updating latest physx drivers, running on only one core, disabling sound, disabling AVG antivirus, messing with FSB settings, cranking fan manually to 100%.

Crashes can happen anywhere for a few hours into game to a few minutes into game. They can happen in dialog, in cutscenes, just walking around or even tabbed out. However when replacing the 4870 with an nvidia 8800 no issues.

It's a driver issue.

Anyone have links to decent, working Nvidia cards? Cause I am about done with my 3870 (I have no patience, I know...). I don't need the best, just something that works...

Well I can tell you all that the PS3 rental I got in today has so far ran flawlessly. Regardless of what the reviews say as well, the game looks as good as the PC on highest settings. I am finally enjoying this game and will mist likely buy the PS3 version. I said this to someone last year and it seems true; the push to consoles over PC seems to be even more relevant. This game is a good indication of that especially since so many developers have had issues programming to the PS3 core technology. There was a major data install however and I still don't get that when developers like Naughty Dog can make the most beautiful and detailed games like Uncharted 2 with zero data installs....

Well i'm glad someone got a useful response from EA. lol. the response to my technical report went something like "Thanks for your interest in the Blood Dragon Armor promotion from Dragon Age: Origins. Your purchase of Dragon Age: Origins for PC, XBox 360, or PS3 entitles you to first purchase redemption of the Blood Dragon Armor for both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 on any available platform. etc." I never mentioned anything about redeeming my blood dragon armour code thingy. I'm like ". . . o_O wwhhhaaaaat?"

1: Price does not always mean quality.

In most other cases I would agree, but where electronics are concerned - for the most part it does. In the world of electronics you do get what you pay for.

2: The card people have trouble with is mostly 3870, which, while it is two years old, was manufactured as top of the line Enthusiast level card, while the card does sell now for lower prices, not everyone purchased it now, you are essentially calling every component ever made crap because at some point it will be cheap.

I'm not talking about lower cost over time, I'm talking about price differance on a new card between a "Name brand" vs a "no-name". There are card manufactures out there that use the same ATI or Nvidia chips as the $200.00 cards, but their card is only $59.00 so places like HP buy the 59.00 card to use in their systems so they can sell the computer for $299 instead of $499. These cheap manufactures use sub standard components, outdated firmware and lower quality standards than the big guys. Even something simple as to how the board is soldered plays a big part in the final specs.

I'm betting most of these systems were purchased at Best Buy, Circuit City, or Wal-Mart. How many of these systems were custom built ensuring quality parts? If you crack open some of these computers you will see names you never heard of like Sparkle or Palit or A-Open mother boards (anyone remember those?). These 3rd party companies don't ensure quality components.

The reason these things become cheaper is because they are no longer the standard, chips are no longer "proprietary" allowing 3rd parties to clone the technology, and demand is higher. Buy the time these "new cards" reach the consumer it is considered "old technology".

Remember that when a game is being designed they are using the latest technology, systems that are in the 5 to 10 thousand dollar range, not yet available to the general consumer. Those prices come down over the years and buy the time the game hits the market, that technology is hitting the market also. So if your system is 3+ years old - it's outdated. Just for fun I speced a quad4 system about 4 years ago, price $12,999.00. (no I didn't buy it) Now you can get a Quad4 system for under a thousand - and people think it is new technology.

Dragon Age is not that visually demanding, More than likely its an issue with the software, either from ATI or from Bioware side,...

It may very well be, and I am not disputing that point - but hardware components and who manufactured them does play a part. Years ago I use to build/sell computers. There are defiantly some Motherboard/Video/Audio card combinations that just don't work together, the average user wouldn't notice it but a gamer would. This is why you need to choose your computer and where you buy it wisely.

From what I have read here, those with higher end systems don't seem to have an issue. If this was souly a software issue - every system with a 38xx series card would have the same issue, most likely it is a combination of the two, hardware and software.

after all, we can't all be cheap bastards with crappy PCs, can we?

I don't appreciate words being stuffed in my mouth. Thats not what I said or implied. I'm sure your not all cheap bastard Image IPB, but you might have a crappy PC. It all depends on A) where you bought it B) Brand of the PC, and C) components used.

I can build you 2 identical PCs, same size CPU, same amount of ram, Same Video specs, but one will cost you $499.00 the other will cost you $999.00
However I can guarantee that the later will run anything you want to put on it, the other, not so much. 4 years from now the 999 system will still be a good machine running most if not all of the newest software, but the 499 one will slow to a crawl and puke on your keyboard when you load up that newest game. (DA3-MMO version maybe??)

To sum this all up - The who and the how of the individual manufacture does play a huge part and that is directly reflected in the cost of the individual components, thus effecting the overall system price.

Hey, HD3870 user also experiencing the black screen of death.

To be honest I'm not that upset because I had no expectations of this game coming in, I bought it because it was made by Bioware. I gotta say though after all of this bull**** if Mass Effect 2 doesn't work flawlessly out of the box I'm going to be very upset.

Still running Vista by the way so it's not a Win 7 problem. Everything was fine until the Wilderness outside of Osterath (or whatever the hell it's called). Crashes every 30 seconds to 1 minute. I've made a little progress by saving every 5 seconds but that got old after the 5th or 6th restart. Time to get re-acquainted with Civ 4 until somebody decides that fixing this is a worthwhile use of time.

Yeah, I'm running Vista 64, so its definatly not just a Windows 7 issue.

Ok I have prevailed against this issue. I have had the same problems with my 3870 in the Ostagar region and I 'solved' it by underclocking the card in RivaTuner. Once out of Ostagar I pushed my card back to its default settings and as of now have yet to crash again. Good luck I hope this helps.

Well Marxism is definitely ok with me after this fix. I've been playing for about 15 minutes (which is an eternity compared to what it was going on before). To clarify for anyone else who wasn't sure what 'underclocking' means (maybe I'm just simple) I opened Rivatuner and under the main tab selected the triangle-ish button on the right next to the description of my video card and selected the first icon called low level system settings. I then moved the slider bars for both the core clock and memory clock to the lowest (safe?) settings (about 730 for the core clock and 1062 for the memory clock). Saved the changes and it's worked fine so far (also with no discernible change in graphics quality).

and I was just about to launch my invasion against the Aztecs too...

Adding my voice.   I've had nothing but hard crashes every time I start the game on my main system with ATI, but when I tried it on my old system with an Nvidia it runs flawlessly.  I'm thinking it may indeed be a driver issue.  I've got games I haven't won yet so I'll wait on ATI and Bioware to get it together.

Just wanted to add that after I swapped out my Radeon 3870 with my friend's Radeon 4850, everything works fine, and there are no crashes. Nothing new, but just another person who has narrowed things down to the card...

Under clocking seems to help with my problems. This should be a good temporary fix until a patch or something can fix it for good.

My pronblem was fixed by switching afinity to core 1 from all, as core 0 is used by most of the other stuff I've runing on my PC I thought it'd be pointless to set afinity to core 0 nad have core 1 do nothing, anyway, just finished a six hour session without crashing, now only if I could solve the problem of exponentially longer loading times, a permanent solution that is, rather than just restarting the game.
