I'm not sure how I feel about time sensitive quests, unless they make it perfectly clear we only have so much time, similar to when Fenris demanded we go after his enemies and would leave eventually, if we didn't do it.

Otherwise I'm going to be constantly worrying about missing out on something.

Another one is being in the Dark Brotherhood and killing the freaking EMPEROR and life continuing like nothing happened.

The player should not get such drastic choices, because there's virtually no way to even semi-accurately reflect that.

That said, for the choices that DA I DOES have, I sure hope they have a bit more reactivity too.

Yeah, that is bad. The Elder Scrolls on the whole does a ******-poor job of making choices matter. Killing the Emperor should lead to discord within Loyalist ranks, tales of political infighting in the Empire's native land that might threaten to tear Cyrodil in two, morale boost for the Nords, and a few other things.

Like I get that it can't be addressed too much because hey, you're not in Cyrodil, but you should be able to at least hear more then "The emperor's dead. Sad that." to at least believe it's having a resounding effect on the world.

I dream of the day where my character can punch a random NPC in the face in one of these games, and the crowds reactions will range from cheering to boos to people calling the guards.

I would think that the civil war would collapse, no? it's Imperial soldiers, not elves, who are fighting, and without their emperor wouldn't the morale drop through the floor? Leading to the Stormcloak Rebellion winning and that entire questline disappearing--leading to Ulfric's policies being enacted in each city/hold...

Basically, it's a huge chain of events. Few games cover that kind of thing well.

Since I just finished the game (for the third/fourth time), I'll say that I think FF XIII-2 did extremely, extremely well with portraying change as a result of the protagonists' (and antagonists) actions, though there's very little freedom in the game to do these kinds of things.

Better than Skyrim, Bioware, at least.

This is probably already possible an old game like Ultima VII.

I know you can have people yelling at you while others call for the guards.

Arguable. It wouldn't be known to anyone, really, that a possibly Stormcloak affiliated Dragonborn was the one who killed the Emperor. While morale would undoubtedly drop, I can see Tullius leading his men and pulling them together, inspiring them to fight on in the Emperor's name. Perhaps some might even say Tullius should try and be Emperor. They did seem to be loyal to him, and it wouldn't be the first time a military general used his troops to take the throne -- though who knows if Tullius would even consider the notion.

Regardless of how it could theoretically play out to address the choices, we both agree that Skyrim's abysmal at it. Skyrim's fun to play and pretty to look at (and DAMN I wish I had a decent comp/laptop to play PC games on so I could mod the **** out of a PC copy of it*) but it relies far too much on headcanon for me to enjoy it in terms of choices and scope.

And I think that's partially due to their engine. IIRC, they haven't really changed their engine but have just been rehashing the same engine and upgrading it repeatedly. But I can't say that for certain. Think I read it in the Skyrim thread down in the OT section.

Sadly haven't played it yet.

*Crustybot, you said you'd give me a bit of advice on decent gaming comps/laptops! :crying:

Ironically I have that on pre-order! I'll end up getting that before I get XIII-2. But before I play either, I have to figure out how to deal with my PS3's limited memory.

40gb was good seven or eight years ago when I first got it and barely had any games, but now it's screwing me over because I've got so many games.

Well I recently bought a 4 GB Xbox 360 to play on and it works. It's certainly suboptimal, but it works.

Lol, I did? Damn. My apologies. If you've yet to buy a PC yet though, PM me a budget and any parts you might be able to use from your old rig. >_<

I would have thought being in the Empire and having joined the Darkbrotherhood for kicks, only to find out one job was to kill the emperor, would have at least imposed some problems. But nope.

As for V-day, don't forget all the betas and dlcs being released. I'm gonna have to wait until my gf is asleep to play any of them though. Ugh, Last of Us, it's been too long.

It kind of happened in Skyrim, when you had brawls to challenge people who wouldn't follow your intimidations, but other than that, ehh, not so much.

And when it first came out, attacking a single chicken would set the whole town after you. xD

Apparently.

Chickens were also counted as witnesses, if you killed anyone.

While older games may have done this, I find the newer games not following such examples as things become more expensive. It was a lot easier for the older games, like Fallout. But with the newer games, it's a whole different ball game.
