Port of Shadows Website

What is Port of Shadows?:

Port of Shadows is a NWN 2 roleplay focused persistent world set primarily in Skullport, the decrepit underworld that lies beneath Waterdeep.  New content is being added regularly as we progress through the late development period. Our planned features so far are:

- Randomly generated dungeons
- ToA character refunds will still be distributed!

Skullport:

Skullport, or the Port of Shadow to the learned and informed, is a dismal and dangerous domain populated by the most vile beings the Underdark has to offer. Mercenaries gather to sell their swords and lives to the highest bidder; drow move about shading their sensitive eyes from glowing fungus, driftglobes, and braziers of glowworms; and slaves go up on the blocks to feed the Calishan and mind flayer demand for labor. In this underworld city beneath Mount Waterdeep, anything and everything can be bought, sold, or traded for a price. Slavers, smugglers, mercenaries, and black-market merchants operate openly in Skullport. In fact, the economy of the Port of Shadow is dependent upon the despicable practice of buying and selling sentient beings. The enigmatic Skulls rule and maintain order in the city. These floating disembodied skulls wander about Skullport, which takes its name from their presence, tending to aims only they can fathom and enforcing their sometimes whimsical and often harsh will through the use of cryptic magical abilities. But so long as the actions of a being do not inhibit trade, cause mass destruction, or attempt to wrest control of the Port from the Skulls, his or her actions are ignored by the Skulls and overlooked by the populace of the city. Skullport is a haven for underworld and illicit activities, especially dangerous ones: Smuggling and smugglers, piracy and pirates, slavery and slavers, drug-running and those who concoct drugs and poison all thrive and dwell cheek by jowl in the Port of Shadow. Most folk in Skullport are hiding from or trying to avoid the forces of the law of the surface world or are poor folk trapped in this city of darkness because of personal misfortune... sometimes just the misfortune of being born here.

Setting:

Just after a bright dawn on the last day of Eleint in the Year of Risen Elfkin (1375 DR)

A long, rolling earthquake shakes the city awake. Cracks appear in walls and crockery rattles, but no buildings collapse. Uproar ensues. Earthquakes are almost unheard of in the city. Rumors of disaster soon race through the streets, fueled by the anguish of people across the city whose heads fill with sharp, sudden mental visions of a screaming bearded man whose eyes blaze with rage, sorrow, and swimming stars. The visions shift into scenes of pillars cracking and tumbling, ceilings collapsing in caverns and dark rooms, and surging explosions of blue-white sparks. These tides of fearsome force leave many who receive the visions gasping on their knees, unharmed but overwhelmed by the sensation of great magical forces crashing through them. Repeatedly the screaming face returns, with feelings of strong despair, of something left unfinished—and swept away in great loss and ruin. What has happened? A few wizards across the city who shared the disturbing visions recognize the screaming face as that of Halaster Blackcloak, the infamous “Mad Mage of Undermountain.”

Soon everyone knows that something terrible has happened in Undermountain. There’s an unknown but exceedingly dark doom approaching the city and the massive dungeon beneath it, and Halaster is very upset about it. Those who have experienced the visions can’t stop thinking of Undermountain, of walking through its chambers, of finding brightly glowing treasures. They yearn to go there, to answer Halaster’s urgent call. Undermountain awaits, in desperate need. Something down there must be repaired, or renewed, or rescued. Halaster wants something done now, something vital. A terrible calamity must be set right, or greater doom will surely come. That night, wizards, sorcerers, a scattering of adventurers, and others across the land dream of Undermountain and a screaming Halaster. They all feel a yearning to enter the infamous, legendary dungeon and do “something that must be done.” No one quite knows what that something is, but many momentarily mind-glimpse strange subterranean rooms, weird items, and a rushing Halaster struggling to accomplish various tasks. Throughout the land, on the morning after the earthquake, wizards, sages, and all sorts of adventurers start packing. The trek to Undermountain has begun.

Former ToA (Tales of Amn) player?  Port of Shadows has your character vault saved and is offering partial refunds on your old characters to put towards new characters on PoS!  This feature is currently in place and all you need to do is log in with your old ToA account in game. :)

Port of Shadows has been going strong since its winter beta release and has already made its way to be one of the most popular NWN 2 roleplaying servers around.  PoS was even featured in an article concerning NWN 2's persistent worlds on Joystiq as one of the servers that caught the author's eye.  Here's a few screenshots that shows some of the many developments made since then so far;

Come join the fun at Port of Shadows.  Be wary, adventurer, for this dark domain is not for the faint of heart.
