I dedicate this thread to honor the one and only true king of Westeros, Stannis Baratheon

Posted Image

While he isn't written well in the live-action series, he's a great character in the books. Basically the only King who actually cares about the Realm. The true king, in fact, by law. The Targaryens lost their right, Joffers isn't even a Baratheon, Renly isn't even the next in line and tried to usurp the throne, and the Greyjoys, well, they're just raiders.

Stannis Baratheon has had many a badass moment. Enough to make him stand out. Such moments include stuff from the second book all the way to the sixth book previews. Here are some example:

(Warning: Spoilers)

“A sacrifice will prove our faith still burns true, Sire,” Clayton Suggs had told the king. And Godry the Giantslayer said, “The old gods of the north have sent this storm upon us. Only R’hllor can end it. We must give him an unbeliever.”

“Half my army is made up of unbelievers,” Stannis had replied. “I will have no burnings. Pray harder.[/b]”

"'Then rise again, Davos Seaworth, and rise as Lord of the Rainwood, Admiral of the Narrow Sea, and Hand of the King.'
For a moment Davos was too stunned to move. I woke this morning in his dungeon. 'Your Grace, you cannot I am not fit man to be a King's Hand.'
'There is no man fitter.' Stannis sheathed Lightbringer, gave Davos his hand, and pulled him to his feet.
'I am lowborn,' Davos reminded him. 'An up jumped smuggler. your lords will never obey me.'
'Then we will make new lords.'[/b]"

"Ramsay Snow, you mean. The Bastard."
"Never call him that!" Spittle sprayed from Theon's lips. "Ramsay Bolton, not Ramsay Snow, never Snow, never, you have to remember his name, or he will hurt you."
"He is welcome to try. Whatever name he goes by."
[/b]

"It may be that we shall lose this battle," the king said grimly. "In Braavos you may hear that I am dead. It may even be true. You shall find my sellswords nonetheless."
The knight hesitated. "Your Grace, if you are dead — "
" — you will avenge my death, and seat my daughter on the Iron Throne. Or die in the attempt."
Ser Justin put one hand on his sword hilt. "On my honor as a knight, you have my word."

Stannis bristled at that. "I defeated your uncle Victarion and his Iron Fleet off Fair Isle, the first time your father crowned himself. I held Storm's End against the power of the Reach for a year, and took Dragonstone from the Targaryens. I smashed Mance Rayder at the Wall, though he had twenty times my numbers. Tell me, turncloak, what battles has the Bastard of Bolton ever won that I should fear him?"

"Bolton has blundered," the king declared. "All he had to do was sit inside his castle whilst we starved. Instead he has sent some portion of his strength forth to give us battle. His knights will be horsed, ours must fight afoot. His men will be well nourished, ours go into battle with empty bellies. It makes no matter. Ser Stupid, Lord Too-Fat, the Bastard, let them come. We hold the ground, and that I mean to turn to our advantage."

“Edric—” he started.“—is one boy! He may be the best boy who ever drew breath and it would not matter. My duty is to the realm.” His hand swept across thePainted Table. “How many boys dwell in Westeros? How many girls? How many men, how many women? The darkness will devour them all,she says. The night that never ends. She talks of prophecies . . . a hero reborn in the sea, living dragons hatched from dead stone . . . shespeaks of signs and swears they point to me. I never asked for this, no more than I asked to be king. Yet dare I disregard her?” He groundhis teeth. “We do not choose our destinies. Yet we must . . . we must do our duty, no? Great or small, we must do our duty.

Discuss anything else Stannis-related here.

I support this!

Currently plowing through ADWD right now, and I expected Stannis to really be dead by now. I wasn't too impressed with Stannis originally in the books, but after a while he seemed to grow on me, and now I'm actually rooting for him.

Of course my ideal set up for Westeros is Davos on the Iron Throne, and Tyrion as Hand, but that's just my fantasy :)

 Stannis Baratheon's Theme

My favorite out of the Game of Thrones music. He is the best candidate for the kingdom if you ask me, he'll put down all the schemers and scumbags like the Lannisters and the Tyrells once he gets to be king. I really hope George R.R Martin doesn't have him killed.

I think Stannis as King without Davos would have a lot of faults to him, but wih Davos as Hand, their reign would be magnificent. Truly so.

I vote to rename this thread as such:

Talk about Stannis Baratheon(and then perform your duties in a leal and puissant manner)

Because there is only one true king of Westeros, and he does not share power!

"Lord Celtigar called it admirable."
"Lord Celtigar could look at the contents of my chamber pot and call it admirable."

It's like almost everything Stannis says is awesome.

Get those blasphemous pictures off my face! The blasted HBO series is not to taint my inner eye's depiction of the glorious Lord Stannis!

And yeah, one of the very few truly honorable (thus far) authorities with a heart of truth instead of just scheming. The guy is the closest thing to reasonable and fair I have yet read about in ASoIaF, with Tyrion a close second.

There's a quote by George R.R. Martin that says that Stannis Baratheon is the closest thing to a hero in the series but I could be wrong about the quote.

Well, he and Tyrion and the old Bear of the Nigh****ch are so far the only authorities I can wholeheartedly approve of in their actions. And out of those three people, only Stannis was in a position where he actually could do much worse if he were inclined or foolish enough to, but he doesn't, so he gets bonus points.

Am very interested to see how the whole Melisandre/Lord of Light thing works out, because that's the one thing that could bring him crashing down if he somehow slips the rope and gets on the fanatical route instead of just playing that role as he's doing so far.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens to Stannis in the sixth novel. I'm not sure when he said this, but the I think the actor who plays Davos Seaworth said that George Martin was half-way done with the book. Again, I'm not sure when the actor said that or if he did. I just hope the sixth book comes out soon, preferably this year.

By the way, here's a quote about Stannis that I just love:

“This is Stannis Baratheon. The man will fight to the bitter end and then some.[43]”- Tywin Lannister

While the Joffrey the coward left the battle. If it hadn't been for Tyrion, King's Landing would have fallen.

Oh also, to get this about Stannis the Mannis, let's ask a question shall we?

Again, dragged from the ASOAIF forums... do you think Stannis loves his child?

I believe Stannis has a hard time showing expressing his love to someone.

Oh, and here's the song Black and Yellow: Baratheon Edition. You won't be disappointed.

Once again Westeros' best hope lies in the North with the stag and wolf. He's the best hope the realm has against what's coming from beyond the wall.

Stannis and Jon Snow spar over Mance Rayder's fate:

"The law ends at the Wall, Your Grace. You could make good use of Mance."

"I mean to. I'll burn him, and the north will see how I deal with turncloaks and traitors. I have other men to lead the wildlings. And I have Rayder's son, do not forget. Once the father dies, his whelp will be the King-Beyond-the-Wall."

"Your Grace is mistaken." You know nothing, Jon Snow, Ygritte used to say, but he had learned. "The babe is no more a prince than Val is a princess. You do not become King-Beyond-the-Wall because your father was."

"Good," said Stannis, "for I will suffer no other kings in Westeros."

Stannis, Rightful King of the Epic Burn:

“A year ago I was scheming to make the girl Robert’s queen,” Renly said, “but what does it matter? The boar got Robert and I got Margaery. You’ll be pleased to know she came to me a maid.”

Stannis: “In your bed she’s like to die that way.”

Asha: "Your Grace's royal brother was renowned for turning fallen foes into friend. Make me your man."

Stannis: "The gods did not make you a man. How can I?"

Stannis ground his teeth. 'It is not my wish to tamper with your rights and traditions. As to royal guidance, Janos, if you mean that I ought to tell your brothers to choose you, have the courage to say so.'

That took Lord Janos aback. He smiled uncertainly and began to sweat, but Bowen Marsh beside him said, 'Who better to command the black cloaks than a man who once commanded the gold, sire?'

'Any of you, I would think. Even the cook.'

Stannis, on the siege of Pyke: (from the TV series DVD extas)

"Robert would later boast of the battle's bloodiness and how he could have torn down the island into the waves if Lord Balon hadn't bent the knee. But if I'd have led the assault, Balon's neck would have bent. Under a sword."

Stannis on justice:

“Every man shall reap what he has sown, from the highest lord to the lowest gutter rat. And some will lose more than the tips off their fingers, I promise you. They have made my kingdom bleed, and I do not forget that. “

Winds of Winter Excerpt:

"Your Grace." Arnolf Karstark bowed his head. "An honor." He looked for a seat. Instead his eyes found Theon. "And who is this?" Recognition came a heartbeat later. Lord Arnolf paled.

His stupid son remained oblivious. "There are no chairs," the oaf observed. One of the ravens screamed inside its cage.

"Only mine." King Stannis sat in it. "It is no Iron Throne, but here and now it suits." A dozen men had filed through the tower door, led by the knight of the moths and the big man in the silvered breastplate. "You are dead men, understand that," the king went on. "Only the manner of your dying remains to be determined. You would be well advised not to waste my time with denials. Confess, and you shall have the same swift end that the Young Wolf gave Lord Rickard. Lie, and you will burn. Choose."

Now that he is a fan favorite he is probably doomed. Posted Image

On a more serious note Stannis did see a prophecy of his own death in Melisandre's flames. Of course whether or not that will come to pass remains to be seen. Either way it is one more element that makes Stannis completely badass. Whether true or not Stannis believes it, and yet certain that he is facing death pushes on with his duty anyway. For Stannis duty to the realm is greater than the value of any one person's life, including his own.

Here is the relevant passage:

"I know the cost! Last night, gazing into that hearth, I saw things in the flames as well. I saw a king, a crown of fire on his brows, burning… burning, Davos. His own crown consumed his flesh & turned him into ash. Do you think I need Melisandre to tell me what that means? Or you?"
