I had no problem killing the child.

It seemed the right thing to do. So many people had already died in the castle and defending Redcliffe village. My character was a nice person. But I was not going to stuff around just to save one life.

I lost -9 approval with Alistair. But it did not bother me because I believed in the decision. I was not metagaming the approval. I made the decision consistent with my character.

Also I had previously watched gameplay footage of the fade. And did not feel like playing through it at that moment.

Inside Redcliffe Castle, you can find a gift for Alistair that gets you a LOT of approval.

So I guess the optimal way to play is to go to Redcliffe before the Mage Tower.

I went to the Mage Tower first, sided with the Templars, and then went to Redcliffe, and I can no longer get help from the Mage Circle. Which means either the mother or the child has to die.

Next game I will do it a bit differently..

Not to hijack another thread, but it seems that going to the mages for help with Connor is a bit bugged. The ingame codex and the online "story" both treat it as if you went with the blood magic option. I've made a thread about it here.

Some people only lost a few points? After the argument in the camp I lost 21 points with Alistair and eventually dropped to hostile with him.

Alistair's reaction to how you solve the Redcliffe situation can be tricky, and can depend on how much he already likes you at the time as well as how persuasive you are if you try to convince him what you did was for the best.
