I just watched the Dragon Age - A World Unveiled Trailer which is AMAZING. (And I guess it will get its own sticked thread? It just doesn't seem to have one yet.) The game looks incredible and I made lots of high-pitched noises. Waiting until northern autumn just got even harder.

However, I was also disappointed that in the middle of being excited about this, I also had to be annoyed. When describing the Inquisitor, producer Cameron Lee mentions that you can be different classes and races ... but he also refers to the Inquisitor as "he" and doesn't bother to mention that you can also be a woman.  The images on screen while he's saying it are all of the various male Inquisitor armor designs.

There are plenty of shots of the concept art of various female Inquisitors, so it's not like BioWare have forgotten she exists. I just think it was a poor choice of soundbite that made it sound like whoever made the trailer cares more about players who want to play as elves and dwarves than players who are female. When describing all the things the Inquisitor can be, how hard is it to say "the Inquisitor can also be a woman"?

Considering that different races was taken out, while being able to select your sex was kept in, I imagine that would be higher priority. Especially as class and race likely have a greater impact on gameplay than sex.

As you said yourself, there's plenty of art and I doubt they would take out something that was in both Dragon Age games.

I don't mean that I think they've taken gender selection out. That would be ridiculous. I mean that they should have taken two seconds to tell people - especially potential new players - that they have that feature.

Its a minor detail that they missed, its an honest mistake. During the panels someone in the crew said "he" and was corrected by Mike Laidlaw i believe responding with "or she". Its not something to make a big deal out of since Bioware has always done a good job of not favoring one gender

I believe the ability to select your sex is fairly common in WRPGs. It would be akin to telling players that they have the ability to jump in a Mario game.

I believe that players prefer to hear new things about a game with confirmation that what made the previous titles enjoyable is still there (unlike what happened to the new Thief game). Races being reincluded? Cool, that's a different step from DA:2. What new prestige classes do you have? What will our party be like? And so on.

I'm pretty sure that they mentioned that a human male is the most basic template for a character design, they start there and then move on to other races and genders. I'm almost positive that the representation of male armors and designs in the trailer was for convenience sake over anything else. And also, like you said plenty of pieces of concept art (If not most) featured the Femequisitor. Bioware definitely isn't having a crisis of equality. They're just using the best of what they have to show IMO. :)

Here's what David Gaider said on the subject of marketing:

http://dgaider.tumbl...-all-the-things

Here's the part about women in particular:

Would you be able to tell us if the female Inquisitor is going to be marketed/showed off in trailers as much as the male is? — fan question

Sorry, I have no idea. Mike has been asked this at previous cons, and has said he (and people further up the line, presumably) are interested in having a greater female PC presence in things like trailers, but I personally have no idea when that would manifest, or how.

I believe they’re well aware there’s interest in giving the female PC some public love, and I personally think there’s also benefit to advertising the fact one can play as female (as opposed to assuming everyone out there already knows this), but that does require the iconic female model to first be ready to go. I guess we’ll see?

I agree with you, particularly on the new players point.

Sure, plenty of people know you can usually select your character's sex, but that doesn't mean everybody does. And video games are not exactly known for being particularly inviting to women, so trying to let people know, "Hey, all you lady gamers are welcome to play this game too" is a very important thing if they want to 1.) Have women play the game and 2.) Increase the number of female gamers in general.

That's not to say that women only plaly games where they can play women, but I still think it's a gesture of goodwill considering how many games default to men only (or the only female options are over-the-top sexualized and clearly aimed at straight male gamers).

It's similar to the inclusion of same-sex romances. I really hope Bioware puts it out there that they're in the game because it definitely makes a difference to at least some of those people out there.

The OP has a valid point, but it is a frequent topic.  Fair warning to the OP: These threads rarely end well.  I fully support female PC in marketing and have debated passionately on the subject.  I know I'm not alone on this, and neither are you.  Just grab your flame retardant suit and be prepared.

Honestly I don't care anymore. I used to want better females too, not just good looking but with character and promotion from devs. I kept remembering CGI male Hawke who fought the Arishok, it was awesome (my avi is my fav hawke modded to look like CGI trailer). I'm a girl and I gave up on female characters long ago and now I mostly play males. The good part to all this is I get to look at male goods. :D

I see nothing wrong with equal support of marketing the female PC along with the male PC, its only fair both get treated equally :3

I'll say this and leave.

Ads and trailers are not here to make the current fanbase feel good about themselves.

how about just Dragon Age: Inquistion with the cloaked figure on the box. So its Uni-sex advertising.

Honestly i don't give a $@%@$ about whats on the cover of the box. Because honestly here is what is going to happen, Put a woman on the cover and you will get people "Using sex to sell the title" While others will say "yay female on box cover yay womens 'rights' "

And if they use a male one, "Boo, BW is a sexiest company who are propousfully keeping the glass ceiling in place"

And every manner of comments in between.

Ads are there to inform the public.  Assuming that everyone knows that women are available to play  is hubris.  Besides, they are plenty of companies that run ad campaigns to reassure the current consumer.  Ads not only exist to inform people of a product, but to get them hyped up for it.  Plenty of women would be hyped up to see a lady in at least one trailer.

On that note, I'm bailing out of this subject before I get too involved again.

They could just do a Box Art with the Male and Female PC side by side in badass poses, with the game title above their heads

and thats my last contribution here

In the video, frankly, it mostly comes down to needing a pronoun and inserting "he or she" into every sentence becomes tiresome. I wouldn't let it bother you.

I'm certain they know people would like to see a female PC in a trailer.

It is a forum topic roughly at least once every ten days.

Lump this in with voiced protagonist/dialogue wheel debates, Qunari/Kossith discussions, Mage/Templar War, multiplayer requests and modkit/toolkit threads. They will just materialize over and over again, just as par for the course.

If you're a gamer, female or male and want to purchase a game, do some research. I'm leaving it at that. I would love to see more advertisement with the female version, but at the end of the day, I do research before I purchase a game and of course, word of mouth.

Yes, but first you need to be inspired to start that research, no?  That's the logic, I believe.

Sure, but that the times have changed for me, when I was younger, what used to inspire me was the cover of the game, now - not so much. Plus, I'm basing this off the user's perspective, where they clearly know or have an idea that there will be the option to play as a female. Plus... that's a video about the worlds/visuals, etc. Wait till later months?

Edit - they do mention the Inquisitor, my mistake.   Though, they are males speaking, I would assume it would be natural for them to speak in terms of "his, he, etc".

I would like for them to showcase the different possible races for the Inquisitor and show snippets of dialog where dialog changes according to the race and gender of your Inquisitor. I don't like the idea of using generic or iconic models in a game which is supposed to support extensive character creation.

"Your Inquisitor, your choice" type of advertising.

Regardless, I don't think the issue is something worth losing sleep over.

That is about as constructive as I can get on the topic, so I'll leave it at that.
