I don't really get why people always pull the profit excuse when it comes to not marketing games with female leads.I thought a business is supposed to include more customers instead of driving them away because of some old boy's club.

Holy ****.

So you try to distract from the sexism of the gaming industry and pretend it doesn't exist? Well excuse me, but apathy is death.

Is it too much to ask for a game that considers female fans? In a day and age where almost all protagonists are grizzled dudebro clones, it'd just be nice to have a bit of variety.

Holy ****.

I swear, this place is going to make me lose any chance of going to heaven.

True, but much like how you get people complaining about DA2 being an effort at appealing to the RPG/action crowd, fans don't always like the one size fits all approach.

With regard to marketing, the goal is to attain the maximum purchases via a minimum amount of publicity. (I think) the point being made is that the female gaming crowd market is sufficiently small that marketing to their interests is a waste of time. I couldn't tell you how true or false that belief is without doing some fun random sampling, but there it is.

What?

Think about what you said. Just think. I know it's hard, but you should try it.

Ignoring the attempt at insulting my intellect I still don't see what is wrong with my point. How is marketing a female main character and possibly attracting more customers hurting anyone?

Marketing to profitable demographics is hardly sexist.

Is it too much to ask for a game that considers female fans?

The game already considers female fans, they've got the ability to play female characters despite being a minority pick.

Not an excuse, more like a reason...

Marketing require budget and it's limited, is it wrong for them to aim for more effective way to get more peoples?
Look, when it come to selling thing company not really care how many female or male buying their product.

They care about this... $$$

Not to mention that promoting female is quite harder than male.

Not just a waste of time, a waste of money too, which is obviously more important.

Cathering to the female gamers with ads specifically targeted at them won't bring EA any profit, it will most likely only cost them money.

It's good public relations, though. Look at how many people you see who advocate they're going to buy all Electronic Arts products because of their public relation tours promoting the fact that they've got same-sex romances or because they include women. It's hard to understand from my perspective but it does seem to exist.

More people buying your product = more money being made. All they have to do is make a couple of small trailers and let the internet drum up interest, hell that's how indie games get noticed so it should be simple for a big developer like Bioware to make a few trailers.

Fun Fact: David Gaider says that women make up 30% of the gaming demographic and the amount of players who played Femshep dropped from 20% of 18%.

More than half the gaming demographic, what a joke.

I support this!  Who needs the Inquisitor when you've got Vivienne?

I think the game should be rewritten entirely from the ground up and feature Vivienne and Cassandra as the PCs players will control.  Thedas will never be the same!

No,but there is a market for women gamers that can be tapped if game developers actually tried.

Actually, it's close to true.  Regardless, female gamers aren't a "small" group - it's just males are more vocal, for obvious reasons.

If marketing deems it irrelevant then that means it costs more money to cater to the uninformed female gender demographic rather than making a wide-spread appeal for the so-called "dudebro", word-of-mouth by a group of people on tumblr who likely follow the game already and are interested in the purchase won't influence it.

It's not even close to true not even if you indeed count the Farmville mothers and Angrybird chicks and Candy Crush girls. Even with those included, women still make up less than half of the gaming population.

Female gamers are definitely a small group. A very small group.

Alright, I'll spell it out.

Marketing exists to make money. They will take whatever marketing approach they think will make the most money. It is not an excuse. It is the one and only cause and priority. The fact that you think marketing is about equality and not about making money makes you rather ignorant when it comes to.. life.

The dudebros or old boys club or whatever you want to call them are the ones that have given them money and continued to do so. As such, EA will continue to focus on them with marketing, and will NOT try a marketing technique that may drive them away. It would be total idiocy to throw away proven customers for unproven ones. Your "rah rah social justice" sheninagins could-and have-done just that.

The whole social justice charade is just a little thing Bioware likes to do on the side. You should be content with the fact that you can choose the gender of the avatar. That's loads more then you get with so many other developers.
