I'm not concerned about the current fanbase. I'm concerned about women who might never glance twice at the game, but who might genuinely enjoy it for any number of reasons if they are at least actively invited to play.

Are there really that many women out there who wouldn't even look at a game because a trailer for it had a man not a woman?

Just slap on the CE like they did with femshep if it's really that much an issue.

So back when Mass Effect first came out, a million years ago, I saw a lot of the marketing. And I couldn't have possibly given less of a crap about it, because all the marketing seemed to really hammer home that it was a MANLY GAME for MEN doing MANLY THINGS in a MANLY WAY. So I didn't play it, because basically all the marketing I saw screamed "THIS IS NOT A GAME FOR YOU, SJOFN, WE DON'T LIKE GIRLS  IN OUR TREEHOUSE." I didn't play it for years. My husband had to finally buy it for me when it went on sale on Steam for like 5 bucks and beg me to at least *try* it before I even bothered with the stupid thing.

Imagine my surprise when I was presented with one of the most empowering female PCs I've ever played.

THAT should be marketed. THAT could draw interest from women (and men who are tired of Grim-faced Man Protagonist). THAT could've gotten a full box price out of me. No, don't only market the Femquisitor, duh, but ignoring her completely actually hides something that the game should be proud of, and something that a lot of people unfamiliar with the games or setting would likely want to know.

It's about people who prefer to play as female knowing the potential is available to them *and* maybe a little more inclusivity in marketing down the line. Simple.

It's also about being sick and freaking tired of being ignored and being shown over and over and over again that "oh, well, we'll take your money I GUESS, but this game isn't for YOU."

Pretty much. I favor the female protagonists in both Dragon Age and Mass Effect myself, so having the option makes a pretty big difference to me. That said, ads no longer matter to me since I'm well familiar with these products, but it can make or break the sale for those who know nothing about the franchise or the developer if it's not clear what's available.

Some girls do not play a game because it hasn't a female representative in marketing? Really?
And books, movies and TV series? They also will not read or watch because it hasn't a female character who represent the content?

Is a kind of childish thinking?

Everything in the whole world now need to show both male and female characters?

Then if they show both white male and female, will you call the game racist? Again, they need to show both couples?

But if the both characters are blond. Oh God, what about the brunettes?

Let's make a cover for DAI with all possible characters. Nobody will cry.

If you don't want mayo on your sandwhich you don't buy a sandwhich with mayo and I'm quite tired of mayo so I won't have anything to do with it.

I didn't buy Mass Effect when it first came out because as far as I knew Shepard was a male no matter what. It took a friend pushing the issue and showing me that Sheperd could be female to convince me and by then I could buy it off steam for 10 dollars rather then Blizzard getting another day one sell. I stopped playing GTA after Vice city as they made it clear there would be no female protagonist and instead jumped ship to saints row 2.

Consumers vote with their dollars and I'm not going to cast a vote for a male lead, except Mario or Megaman, because they simply don't interest me in the least. It just means when a game comes out with a female lead I'm ready to buy it.

As for movies and books. Unless they have a female character that I like I will not read or watch them and especially won't buy them. This does not mean the female has to be the absolute lead of course. I'm quite fond of Ugly Americans, Futurama, Helix and eh maybe bitten it's losing me fast. Plus there are plenty of mangas for those who like strong female characters.

You are clearly incapable of grasping the finer points of what is being said, so perhaps you should sit this one out.

BeadyEyedTater, really?

then clarify me, since you are so smart to do it. I will read your explanation.

And yes, I really don't understand why a person don't play, read or watch something because there is not a main character with a gender specific.

I can understand if you don't like something about theme, gameplay or visual.
But to no appreciate something because there is not a man or woman in the front?

I see people as people, not as man or woman. I don't discriminate.
But looks like others love to determines this kind of stuff.

Untrue. The purpose of an advertisement is to promote the game, not inform about the game. As such, it is their responsibility to choose images that best promote the game--images that result in the most interest in terms of $$$.

And given the history of FPS protagonists, we all know what that is. That's simply life. Business.

your problem  is understandable. A lot of marketing is not aimed at women, but the fem quisitor isn't being ignored. There is only one trailer out (that I know of) and the inquisitor isn't even shown. And IMO potentially missing out on a wonderful trilogy because of the gender if the protagonist  isn't a failing on their part, it's discrimination on yours.

Not any more childish than the catering of the video game industry to the straight male gamer.

For the last decade, gaming was usually dominated with advertising towards men, since clearly some people didn't think women played games. Why must gaming be dominated by hordes of white male protagonists with a stubble. I think the last 100000 of them was enough.

Why is it that developer's represent this one type every single time? Why not have a little variety?

It's because of stereotypes, my listeners, stereotypes.  The stereotype of the geeky gamer guy will never go away anytime soon.

This isn't about appeasing everyone, this is about having some variety in advertising. This is about reminding women gamers that they are remembered as being actual gamers, that they are considered just as much as the straight male gamer. If you can't see that, then I pity you, I really do.

Is it really too much to ask for a little variety? Is it enough to be insulted and lash out when someone asks for it? Must we as a society always hate things that are different from the status quo? Is it really necessary?

Considering this is an rpg AND an rpg that has a character creator that includes different races and genders it would only improve hype and understanding of the game to promote those aspects alongside choice, open world etc. Soooo yeah promote/inform....bit of the same thing in this case.

As for FPS games....that's a little silly since I don't think most companies have even tried to market female protags. They're biggest selling point is BOOM SPLOSIONS. I could have gone through CoD Ghosts as a woman and it would have changed zilch. Hell CoD lets you be a woman now anyway so by that alone it seems like times are a changin

While I understand wanting to promote to both demographics there is something to be said that when making trailers/tv spots and the like... you can't jump between the Male and Female default characters in the same trailer, it'll confuse people that only have a passing interest.

OperatingWookie you're missing the bigger issue. This is the type of mentality that the majority publishers believe in, that most male gamers will not purchase a game with a female protag, and in turn give developers heck for trying to make a game with one.

I find it hypocritical for people to give others flak over gender discrimination when they personally subscribe by it.

I'm not against showing a female character. In my games, I create male and female characters. No problem for me.
I'm just questioning people who discriminate against an entertainment only by the fact of not having a man or woman as an example to present a product.
I'll play DAI regardless of who Bioware chose to be the Inquisitor in advertising.

You know what I find absolutely disgusting? Outside of the first True Crime game their is an utter lack of left handed characters! (Non sport games). :D:bandit::P

Guys need to know they can play a guy, so the solution to get more female gamers to play the game is to make it a really hot looking guy.

.....Thinking back, I actually have a sister who never played video games who wanted to play FFVII simply because of posters she saw of Cloud.

Bill Hicks would be turning in his grave right now, that so many people put so much stock into advertising and marketing.

If it's shows a good game, it will sell. Have a female lead in the trailers but having a different trailer for each "group" just gets into stupid territory and is just a company throwing away money that could've been better spent.

So, do blondes female gamers play games because of their quality? Or do they play a game just because there is a female protagonist there?

Blonde female here to answer your question: Female gamers like anyone, buy games based on a number of factors. There are different elements that are important to different people. For instance, things that are important to me in a game are: character customization, role playing, characters, story, etc...If a game trailer does not indicate the pressence of these elements (for instance Gears of War) then it will not spark any interest in me. A trailer needs to appeal to you and spark your interest and from there you begin your search for reviews, features, information, etc...If that interest is not sparked then the journey never begins.

Legend of Zelda?

Doesn't Link hold his sword with his right hand?

I guess it could be argued that Connor might be a lefty cause of how he holds his bow and arrow in ACIII.  Which by the way as a righty felt incredibly awkward at the time.

So wait... What you're saying is because many people are sexist, then it's okay?

Many people can be wrong too. Besides, I doubt the Bioware fanbase is the type to give tons of flak over a female protag being featured. This isn't a completely male fanbase we're talking about here anyway.

As long as it's explained in the trailer (doesn't need voice work) than I don't think that is an issue.
