Ok, I have played through DA2 several times and have done a total of 2 mage builds.  However, I have never ventured into the Blood Mage specialization and I was tempted to try to do so with a new run through.  I usually do the entire Pyromancy talent tree, I grab the rock armor, and then from there I just have a hodge podge of spells.

But, what I was wondering about was what is the best route for distributing attribute points if I wanted to tackle the blood mage specialization?  I know that in order to use any of the spells there is a sustained mode that needs to be active but in order to use magic after starting that your HP is what is used to fuel the spells.

Any suggestions?

As sustainables are percentage based, BMs don't really need mana.

When I pick BM specialization, I respec with the Black Emporium potions and put points into magic and constitution.

Only attributes you should be concerned with as a blood mage is Magic and Constitution. Whether I'm playing a PC blood mage or building Merrill, I always invest in a 2:1 ratio of Mag:Con and once my constitution is at a good enough number (I stop at 30, personally) , go for full magic. Increasing your mana isn't a concern since you'll be casting from your health pool with blood magic active.

The best robe in the game* requires 18 Willpower but you can meet this requirement without investing any attribute points into it by "pre-buffing" using other items. What this means is that you equip items that add to willpower (you'll need a total of +6) until you fulfill the attribute requirements in order to use the armor you want, and after equipping it, you can just remove the pre-buffing items and go back to using what you want.

Using maker's sigh potions will remove all weapons/armor that have attribute requirements you don't currently meet, however

*Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness is the robe in question, obtainable from the Black Emporium during act 3

If you are using the item pack items, you don't even have to worry about willpower requirements as they don't have any.

Sweet, thanks for the advice. Would it be a good idea to maybe grab the Force Mage specialization first for that passive ability that prevents knockdown or knockback I can't remember.

You pretty much have to take Force mage, as Spirit Healer is more or less useless with BM. The +25 mana bonus is wasted, and you can no longer use Healing Aura with Blood Magic in the latest patch.

Yes, in the early part of the game Force Mage is more useful than Blood Mage.

Not that it's more useful, but you don't have the HP pool to justify using Blood Magic at level 7 (and other low levels). That being said it depends on what difficulty you're playing on. I've never tried a Nightmare playthrough, but I seem to get away with taking Blood Mage first (and getting abilities a couple levels later) on normal and hard.

I get WP to about 20. I think you need 31 for the best gear but don't hold me to that, and even still there are runes and items that give you Willpower.

From my understanding there were various changes made to the game so that secondary stat requirements for armors were made significantly lower, so the top tier items like Champion's gear only require 18 WP now.

And that's why Force Mage is more useful. ;)

Correct.
