One of the aspects of ME3's Extended Cut endings that made the least sense to me was Shepard being referred to as "the Shepherd" in the Stargazer scene. That made some sense in the original endings were galactic civilization was implied to have collapsed for millennia, but it made zero sense in the Extended Cut, where that no longer happens in High EMS variants. Civilization has not lost the means to preserve its history, and thus there is no reason why Shepard would have passed from being a historical figure to a mythological one.

That, and "the Shepherd" just sounds incredibly lame.

With that in mind I'd like to take this opportunity to beg Bioware to please quietly forget that nonsense from ME3's endings and not carry it over into any sequel. Do not cause a million ME fans to simultaneously groan in agony and head desk.

We already groaned and head desked with the Stargazer Scene. "All that happened very long ago. Many details have been lost and forgotten."
"Will I ever get to the stars?"
"One day, my sweet.....
"Tell me another story about The Shepard?"
"It's getting late, but alright, one more story."
"How about the one where Shepard beats the s*** out of that guy on the Citadel?"

How about the one where Shepard drinks ryncol, wakes up in the lavatory with Jack, where she talks about getting gangraped, and Shepard, stumbling out, gives an interview to Al-Jilani and beats the **** out of her at random? Then goes to the Turian arms dealer and gloats about destroying the Destiny Ascension.

edit: OK, that was a little wordy.

"How about one more with Shepard and Liara fvcking? Those are my favorite grandpa!"

If it takes place after ME3, I hope they do.

Just so people hate it and they don't make those type of games anymore, right?

I'm on to you. ;)

Please don't mention "The Shepard"

In fact, don't mention Shepard at all.

Or Liara
or Garrus
or the Reapers.

Just forget any of that happened.

The more distant ME4 is from the events of the trilogy, the better.  I'm banking on a far future where the precise events have been lost and we can all stop thinking about the ME3 ending too much (Assume Destroy because it leaves the fewest loose ends in the galaxy)

....and also because synthesis is creepy as **** on the extended ending

But yeah, im betting on that ME4 is so ****ing far into the future that all the **** that happened will be ancient history
I would prefer that they just dump the number in the title and go with something else to represent the change

I'm also hoping that the next game is set far in the future. Fast forward seven hundred years or so.

But I don't think history should be lost. Without civilization completely collapsing that shouldn't happen. In order for history to be lost society would have to revert to a state where history is passed down word of mouth around a campfire.

That's what the whole Shepard thing looks like to me though.

It's probably the future.

But a vague vision of it.

Don't put so much importance on it.

And yeah, Shepard will probably be considered 'The Shepard' far far far into the future.

But not the next game. I'm almost sure of it.

See, now this thread just makes me hope that they spam the term "the Shepherd" in ME4. LOL!

Shepard = ME4's Andraste for sure. "Shepard help me" and "By Shepard's hand cannon" will be common interjections.

I also didn't understand why the chose to call him like that. It looked like the story of Shepard was just a fairy tale and what you played for 3 games never happened in the real world.

I subscribe to your petition, please don't call him " THE Shepard" .

I'm with you, OP. The Shepard is naff, no ways around it. It's not meaningful, clever or creative, and makes no sense at all.

Agreed. It's made even more weird sounding by the fact that his name is actually Shepard.

Are people calling him The Shepherd (which doesn't even really accurately describe his role)? Or are they calling him The Shepard (which is just silly)?

But the galaxy was his flock! And he was heaven-sent to safeguard them against the demons from dark space!
