I liked ME1 in this regard. You get all of your squaddies before leaving the cit, and you can go pick up Liaria right off the bat.
That is the way to do companions. Get them at the start or very early in the game...not in the freaking middle or end.
That one companion that's recruited so late into the game you barely get to use them

In the case of Mhairi, I certainly do wish that the decision over which companion took a dive during the Joining had been an option. I would have kept her around for at least a some of my playthroughs. I couldn't care less about Tamlen, although his later ghoulish appearance in the Camp was a nice bit. Knowing that Jowan was first intended to be a party companion sucks as well. I think I could have really grown to like that guy in a permanent capacity.
After all is said and done to recruit Loghain, it was really a damn shame that additional content did not kick in with his inclusion, just so you actually could have time to develop some type of relationship with him.

Oghren isn't a dlc character.

I hadn't thought about this at all, but I do agree I'd like to get companions earlier on. Not just so I can interact with them more, but also in terms of leveling. Sure it's a little unreal that you just get all of these people closely together, but I'd much prefer it that way. As long as you can have lots of conversations with them at various locations. If not, then it would be best to introduce them later.

I just meant that once I got aghren I already did all the main quests. By the time I got him it was pointless using him since I already got a set party

It always annoyed me in ME2 that I always had to sacrifice my crew to "spent" some time with Legion or leave Legion for DLC's and go and rescue me crew cause he was recruited so late.

I've always thought this too. In my most recent Origins playthrough I went straight to Orzammar, following Bhalens quest line until you can get Oghren, then went to the tower, saving the Deep Roads for later. Oghren won't talk to you in camp until you do the Roads, but you can see all the quest related dialogue he has this way.
As for Tamlen, I really liked his arc. It took me completely by surprise to see him again, and still stands as one of my favorite moments in Origins. The reason being the dalish was like my forth playthrough, so I had grown accustomed to the surprise attack at camp. It showed me the game still could surprise me after many hours of play.

At least in ME1 they did a good job if you decided to leave getting Liara as long as possible. When you talk to her she thinks she is hallucinating if I recall if you leave her for a long time in her little prothean bubble.

It always does seem as if there's that one companion who isn't available until you've already completed huge chunks of the game. In DAO, that was Zevran. I would much, much rather have had him in the Lothering chantry trying to kill me and bumped into Leliana later, after word of the Warden had begun to spread. DA2 wasn't nearly as bad since you could do the companion recruitment quests in nearly any order.
I agree completely. I wish Zevran had been a more scripted encounter, rather than a random one. I always spend a ton of time traipsing back and forth after his send-out cutscene, cause he just Won't. Show. Up. ugh.
The Legion/IFF connection thing bugged me too. Why couldn't we chose when to turn the stupid thing on, again?
And, of course, Jory and Daveth in DAO. I liked both of them, even if Jory was a bit... whiny. I think he would have been fun to have around on the Circle quest and some of the other magically inclined quests - What with the "She's a witch! A witch I tells ya" reactions.
