Hunt Volcanic is probably the hardest. For whatever reason, Volcanic does not seem to give you a good time add bonus when you kill enemies. Unlike other Hunt missions were you can rack up a good score around 100, Volcanic is hard to even get 40, especially on Insanity.
Unless you are going to the Insanity achievement, I would just drop the difficulty down to Hardcore or even Veteran.
I usually just take Wrex and Ashley/Garrus with a good assault rifle (so you do not have to micromanage them with Pistols using Marksman), and use Master Marksman with a halfway decent pistol and hope for the best. If you need to, pause, pan around to lock on to the next enemy, then unpause and unload.
That's the only advice I can give you. Because Volcanic Hunt is stupid hard compared to all the other missions.

Turning down difficulty is good advice & the squadmates of Wrex/Ashley or Garrus is good input also. Also make sure you've equipped everyone prior to the timer kicking off. Every second is helpful especially those first few seconds where you can sprint to be in a good starting location immediately. If you're running a Soldier, you'll tend to find it a bit easier due to just tanking & shooting all the time. Yes, pistol w/master marksman is highest DPS but you can't run Marksman constantly so a Spectre VII/X AR in the hands of a properly decked out Soldier will move quickly through enemies. Also, once you get Colossus armor, Spectre X weapons, Savant X Omni-tool(s)/biotic amplifier(s), etc..., you should be able to run it, even on Insanity & with any class w/o too much trouble. Of course, unless you run it fairly late in the game (level 48+), that won't help much on your first run through. In general, trying to run it before level 30 is going to be pretty difficult & frustrating. After level 40-45, it should be measurably easier & doable after level 30 (details matter here: class, level, difficulty, gear, mods, amps, squadmates, etc...). I usually go to Pinnacle around level 35, turn down the difficulty (already have all the achievements) to cut down on the time required to complete everything. The very first time I ran it, I can't remember as it's been a long time but I believe I was in the mid to late 30's in level, but might have been low-40's. I had top gear though (Spectre VII, level 7 mods). I mainly do it now for the retirement apartment & quicker access to top armor (Colossus, Berserker) & top amps/Omni-tools.
One thing on Hunt missions is to keep your eyes on the radar & go immediately towards enemies & kill them quickly. Don't wait for them to come to you as the Admiral says. So sprint as needed. It may seem inconsequential but those 2-3 seconds saved over a minute may just add up to the 3 extra kills you need. This is especially important near the end where they try to run away from you. Also try to use only level 7 Tungsten/Shredder mods as needed depending upon the enemy type. They simply do the best job at killing things quickly.
It's good to see people still playing Mass Effect 1, still the best overall in the series imo.

I loathe things like like the simulator, timed runs and arenas. It gets too arcade for me. I went through it on my first Insanity run and I had an Adept with Wrex and... Ashley, I think. It's been a while.
Even then it was late game and after 50, it gets stupid hard. It's best to take it before 40 and with VII Specter gear. While I always play on Insanity, I run through it as the first thing out of the Citadel and turn the dif all the way down to Casual. Then I get the pad with a grenade supply to play with.
Those things, should have been replenished with the Meds on the Normandy.
