As a black guy, I find actively asking for more black characters weird. I mean, if there's a black character and he's cool - good, great, wonderful, but stuffing some in there just for the sake of ticking boxes seems somehow off.

And this. It's always interesting to see that most of the people who ask for these things, always say that a certin set want inclusion, but are not even a part of this group. I couldn't agree more.

So because he said he is Black that means i'm white for wanting diversity. And for you information I am Black (Igbo slave descent in Trinidad) mixed Punjabi.

I don't think he meant it as an afront to you.

Oh I think he did. He seems very much against this thread. First, he insinuates I think people are dumb if they don't see diversity on the box cover of a game and catch how he said it. Is he implying I think White people are dumb folk? Plus I am not talking only about box cover representation, but LI in game and other lead NPCs. I want diversity, accents, cultural represenataions (not Turian, Quarian, and Drell culture). Lets have some more interesting representation of Human characters. Some of the posters have really good ideas, but I don't like where he is coming from though!

We already got an Afghani LI with Tali in ME3.

While I agree that the Quarian Race in general have some Middle Eastern aspects, it's not quite the same thing as having Middle Eastern characters.

It was confirmed that they used an Afghan woman's likeness for Tali's picture.

Well, this just proves that BW is racist.

Jacob is black and is boring.

I though she was Israeli?

You haven't been on BSN very long, have you?

I'm black, guy. Why would I care your feelings toward white people?

Plus I am not talking only about box cover representation, but LI in game and other lead NPCs.

As I said, I don't care about LIs, read my response. Characters in a game aren't where I go to for representation.

This is galaxy wide. Why would they focus on more human culture than aliens?

You really don't even know anything about me, and for the record, reskinning people won't change the fact that Earth is part of a much larger galaxy, so human
 cultures<alien culture.

I'm not arguing that fact, I saw the Tali picture myself and the woman from the original picture clearly looked Middle Eastern. However, I believe the original point Han was trying to make was that there weren't any Human NPCs that were Middle Eastern.

Can't with just have decent characters and draw their ethnicity out of hat or something?

I would like to see more diversity for Humans in game for inclusiveness. I would like those characters to also have interesting background stories (not what Jacob got). As it is the Humans are made boring and the Aliens interesting.

You got Jacob, and then you got Kai Leng, though I guess Leng counts more as an anoying stalker.

I'm not sure how to classify all the alien LI's.

You'll never get full on inclusive not not unless your planning on making the roster look like the membership of the UN. Humans being kinda boring might be a consequence of humans being too familiar to begin with. It's a culture and form of life we will always be comparatively more familiar with, which is why I think people tend to gravitate towads the alien and synthetics squadmates more, they're inherently more interesting because of how different they are.

While Jacob didn't particuarly stand out much there wasn't anything particularly wrong with his character (least not until the third game).

But aren't the aliens themselves extremes of certain human cultures? They are not really that alien at all. They could be made that way though, like the rachni.

I never got the impression myself honestly, each alien culture seems to draw some inspiration from a missmash off human cultures but you can't really define them as analogues to any specific one. They seem to fill more occupational archetypes than anything else. Simplifying it somewhat Turians are military guys, Asari diplomats, Salarians scientists, I'd be hesitant to call that an extreme of any paricular human culture. They're government and social structure is alien enough as to not have been found on earth, they don't have to all be Hanar or Rachni to qualify as alien.

Between the spam and that dude going on a homphobic/sexist rampage I am thouroughly turned off from everything in that thread. Including Firefly. You should watch LEXX. 790 is the best LI ever. Oh, and I will never bring up Garrus as a femshep LI again. Let him be with Tali. Never again. Kaidan still creeps me out!

Sorry, that's a real shame. Interwebs idiocy aside, I think you'd like it. It's a smart, character-driven show. If you like the works of Joss Whedon, you'd like it.

I've got a lot of things lined up to watch already, but I might have to look into it at some point.  I literally know nothing about LEXX.

I hope one day Bioware creates games where the ethnicity and background of main characters is randomized. That's actually the kind of fun thing you can pull of with the Dragon Age toolset - just make some properly named headmorphs, and drop them in the override folder for some different looking companions.

I dunno if it was on the forum, but didn't a dev at some point say that Bioware got a lot of weird fan blowback for giving Isabella in DA2 a darker complexion?

Well, looking at the human squadmates/Normandy characters:

Kaidan: ?
Ashley: White
Anderson: Black
Joker: White
Kasumi: Japanese
Zaeed: White
Jacob: Black
Miranda: White
Jack: White
Vega: Hispanic
Cortez: Hispanic

Take that as you will. Also, Shepard can be any race you wish as well.
Besides, is it really good to have a character be whatever race for the sake of him/her being that race?

I actually thought Ashley had more of a hispanic look to her, but the last point you make is a good one. Tokenism should be avoided. I don't think it's been much of a problem thus far, but at the same time, I don't think writers should feel pressured to include person/persuasion/political stance X or face censure.

They'll just stereotype them I mean Jacob got the sexy black man treatment in ME2 which made everyone hate him because shep couldn't stop acting a freaking cougar around him and then he got the typical no good man treatment when he cheats on you so really they racked them up on him if they did an Asian she'd probably be the Wendy Woo or part time ninja hobbiest. I think they should just let us customize our human heros to be whatever nationality we want them to be then you could say they're the black/asian/whatever LI for that human.

One example i've been wondering about is Thane. Bioware introduces the Drell in ME2 and by ME3 they are no longer present or of significant importance. Thane dies, Kolyat disappears, Feron is not present or is dead if you didn't do LotSB. You can accumulate Drell and Hanar war assets but they are not significant to the war effort, and we don't even see another Drell. We learn nothing more about the Drell. So what was the point of the Drell? Even Thane's writer said, if an mmorpg of ME were to happen, no Drell should be playable because they are so little in number and going extinct.

Thane could have been human. He could be any race, but let's make him Asian, trained in a monastery, martial arts expert. Leaves monastery to marry wife and becomes assassin to support family. Wife dies as a result of his job and his son is abandoned to hunt her killers. Has rare/incurable lung disease. Here is a human love interest with a unique background related to his racial/ethnic/cultural history plus of course he's got personality (much more than Jacob that is). Much more interesting (to me at least) than a Drell. And we have an Asian (male) love interest.

If you want to throw a random Drell assassin (instead of a ninja) to finish him off in ME3 so be it.

Jacob is the only black male LI and the only one that cheats. He could have been made more interesting in ME3 (plus take him out of that spandex). A BW employee said he was a side switcher so that meant he would automatically be a cheater. Well after I did his LM I felt he would be a good family man.

Mass Effect is a sci-fi space opera. Personally, I'd much rather it be focused on the many other Alien species than on humans. I get way too much of them in everyday life. No need for another human squadmate. 4 was already too many.

I wish my own ethnicity had a fraction of the amount of representation that Asians and Blacks had in ME and other games. :(

Kaidan is South American :), Brazilian. and Cortez is too dark to just be Hispanic. most likely mixed.
