I mean, I cared, and this seems to work, so!
NOTE: this has only been tested on PC. I don’t have access to either console, so I have no idea if it works there. I would love independent confirmation of this on any platform. In addition, this is only for those alternate broken banners that have to be selected via N7HQ and both BotBs. Obviously, the standard banners selected in game that still work don't need this.
Short version of solution: Go in and out of the store a bunch of times.
Long version of solution: …go in and out of the store a bunch of times. You don’t have to buy anything. I have absolutely no basis for any of this save my own speculations, but it looks as though the store is the one place where the game checks the banner resource every time you leave it. It takes a different number of attempts every time (like you’re going for that Ultra-Rare all over again!), but so far, testing it on my laptop and my desktop, it does eventually work every single time I’ve tried this. So here’s what I did and also some random notes, because I can’t figure out how else to organize this.
WHAT I KNOW
1. I set up a private lobby just for myself. This is the easiest way to check your banner every time with a minimum of loading screens.
2. From the lobby, I went to the store. I didn’t buy anything, just entered and exited back to the lobby several times. On the desktop, it took 8, 5, 2, 1, 6, 2, and 3 attempts for the banner to load properly on re-entry (this is with fully exiting the game between each successful attempt, to make sure I was starting from the broken IMG banner). When I tried it on the laptop, it took 10 tries the first time and 4 the second, but it did eventually work every single time. (I should also note that sometimes it took quite a while for either the banner or the IMG to load after coming back from the store. This is, as far as I can tell, normal. Just wait for it to finish before going back in.)
3. Once the banner has loaded properly, it will continue to load properly while that instance of the game is running. I left multiplayer, hopped into single player, and came back into MP and it was still working great. If you exit the game completely, though, odds are it’ll be a rainbow again when you come back the next time.
4. This works with every broken banner I’ve tried. (BotB, Dog of War, the FemShep Lone Wolf, alt Tech Mastery, and the alternate N7.)
5. The banner will continue to load properly regardless of whether you’re the host or not. I jumped into a couple random matches and came out again, and every time the banner was working for me.
WHAT I DON’T KNOW (edited, as I've since had the chance to experiment with a friend)
1. If the banner then works on your group’s screens too. Somehow I doubt it, considering I’ve been in a group with a friend of mine where it was working on my screen and not on hers. It’s like there’s a local connection the individual machine is struggling with, but once it’s made, it’s good for the rest of the time that instance of ME3 is
running.
Answer: Nope, the banner does not work on your lobbymates’ screens too once you have gotten it to work on your screen.
2. If you jump into a group with a host whose banner is working, will that cause yours to work? I have no idea on this one. I doubt it, but I haven’t had the chance to test.
Answer: No, if you jump into a lobby with a host whose banner is working for the host, that does not cause your banner to begin working for anyone but you.
3. If you go to the store while in a lobby with other people with broken banners, will all of yours work when you come out of the store (eventually)?
Answer: The part of the answer we know is, yes, if you go in and out of the store while in a lobby with other people wearing the SAME broken banner as you, all those banners will begin to work FOR YOU when you come out of the store with your own banner working. We do not know if any other banners will begin to work for you in those circumstances, and honestly have no idea.
4. If once you’ve gotten your banner to work, will other people’s broken banners will then display correctly on your screen, regardless of what they are? I suspect that this one might actually be true—over the past couple of weeks, I’ve never seen my banner display correctly in a lobby with an IMG banner as well. If my banner was working, so was theirs. Wherever these files are hosted that they’re causing so many problems, I think they’re in the same place.
Answer: Unfortunately, no, other people’s broken banners do not display correctly on your screen simply because you’ve gotten your own banner to work.
My buddy had an alternate Mathemagician, I had BotB, and while we could each see our own we couldn't see each other's.5. If you’ve gotten a banner working, then crash or quit and then immediately reload the game without changing your banner in the N7HQ, it seems like your banner will continue to work. The last couple of times I tried this last night I actually couldn’t get the IMG banner to even come up — it was stuck displaying correctly. Oh, darn. However, I don’t know if this was a fluke or not.
Additional answer from my friend: "UNMODIFIED RAPTURE.
I closed out of Quark’s lobby, exited MP, closed ME3, wrote up the foregoing part of this post, then relaunched ME3MP and created a new lobby to test question #5, whether reopening the game without changing the banner via N7HQ would allow it to continue to work. MY ALT TECH MASTERY BANNER LOADED RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. For me, anyway. ;-) I haven’t replicated that result yet, and I haven’t tried it with closing Origin or rebooting my laptop in between, but it is a matter for further study. :D"SO. Like I said at the beginning, I would really like to hear if this works or doesn’t work for you. I know it’s a pretty minor thing in the grand scheme of the game, but it was making me pretty sad to see that IMG all over the place and this seems to alleviate that, if only for myself!
