Even though I'm aware of the Arch-types that seem to exist.. Colonist/Ruthless and... Spacer/War Hero respectively, I can't bring myself to belittle the people that want to play the game that way. It's a game, you play it how you want to, you know?

Of course!  I'm not trying to belittle people either, I'm just curious as to why people chose what they chose is now.

A colonist/sole survivor shepard would be a real screw up.

I chose Colonist/Sole Survivor. After all, only someone who has survived can keep the galaxy alive. ;)

Yea, it was a tragic playthrough, nothing but horrible things happening in life. I roleplayed my character over coming all of this to turn out to be a generally nice person. Although sometimes he did have to make the tough choice. He was mainly Paragon, but had a good dose of Renegade for a few of the options.

In a way having nothing but a tragic life reminds me of me. Depite all the horrible things that happened to me I just... work through it. What else am I going to do? Give up? Just because someone has had a bad life doesn't mean they are a bad person. They might be better off and more kind than a lot of people because they have had to endure a crap hole life.

Also no my life wasn't THAT bad. So no emo comments or /wrist please. :P

for my main Sheps I made to combos that give me the most bonus
so Über-Paragon Leonardo Shepard is Spacer/War Hero Adept, while Renegon Raphael Shepard is Earth-born/Ruthless Vanguard
and yes, I'll be making a Colonist/Solve Survivor Paragade Sentinel called Donatello,
here have a cookie if you get the connection ;)

for the secondary characters I was less picky, though the military service background was more important... so if I'd make a Shep a Renegade he/she would be ruthless...

Soul Survivor must be my least favourite, (as is Colonist), but they might get additional scenes in ME2?!

Earthborn/War Hero. Mostly Paragon playthrough.

I liked the idea of rising above my upbringing to become someone of virtue and importance.

you would have liked the dwarf commoner in dragonage.

I actually used Colonist and Sole Survivor Background for my main paragon FemShep. Cause she's lost everything twice, she's even more motivated to not let anyone die in order to make sure noone has to go through hell over it, as she did.

Sure, if you open fire at sight, she'll likely kill you in return, but as long as you know when it's time to give up, you've the chance to do so.

My main RenegadeShep however is Earthborn and Ruthless. He's a kind of twisted sense of moral and considers himself as being kind of a "fallen angel that hunts down devils". For him, everyone who breaks the law is no longer considered as protected by the community he has betrayed and has to be destroyed at any cost. While doing that, he's fully aware of the fact, that in the end he'll be one of this devils himself, and therefore would've to be hunted down by another one of his kind.

I actually have DA:O, and I haven't played any of the Dwarf origins yet.

Maybe I'll take a gander before my free time is devoted elsewhere in 5 days.

My Shepard, Claire, is a Colonist War Hero. I wanted her to have a reason to -really- hate Batarians, and because everyone ingame goes "OMG your Shepard!" I went with War Hero because that way at least it was something worthy of all the attention. (Not that surviving a horrible attack against Maws isn't uh great, I just think saving lives and an entire colony is far more praise worthy.)

I've done nearly all the other backgrounds though, cept for Ruthless. I can't ever seem to make a pure-Renagade character. ._.;

My Paragon is a Spacer War hero. It's the best option for Paragon since you get bonus points.

My first true original shepard was earthborn/war hero

I dunno... I loosely based her off of me, and was overjoyed that a nobody orphan whelp from the slums of earth could help save a major colony

Plus, her mentor Anderson, Kahlee Sanders, Hendel etc are all earthborn too :)

I prefer the Earthborn specific quest over the other two. It's a good oppertunity to establish that despite the fact that Shepard's overcome some obstacles. Also, for reasons I won't go into, I can relate to it a bit more than I can the others, and not just because I'm from Earth.

As for being Ruthless, I just like it when NPCs call my Paragon--well, paragade--character the Butcher of Torfan.

all of my Commander Shepard's are War Hero/Spacer since I thought that those 2 were the best choices in my opinion and I have quite a few Commander Shepard's that I created.

I prefer the Spacer and War Hero background. Or Spacer and Sole Survivor.

I do not like the idea of having been part of gangs as I just wouldn't do that in any situation and I like the idea of always being in space. Neither do I want to come over all 'oh poor me' and have the most messed up background I can think of.

Neither is there any reason to belittle anyone about his or her choice.

I simply prefer these two combinations above all else and find them the most suiting for me.
