You know, I wasn't gonna say it...

But yeah. I've been here since DA:O and ME2 (and through SWTOR, which was and remains utterly insane), and its the same circular argument, over and over again.

I don't think they made DA more like ME, I think they moved both franchises in similar directions.

Although I concur with that point, they had less far to go with ME than DA.

Dragon age has always been more tactical, and there have been some different mechanics.

They [meaning DA & ME] use similar mechanics, always have, and hopefully, always will, its a winning formula.

Oddly, it did not take you much more than a single paragraph to contradict yourself.

Dunno what that means. What nice things are we not getting, and why are we at fault for it?

you know what, I like everything I've played by bioware except BG, yes that means ME3 and TOR... haven't gotten my hands on kotor but from what I can gather it's largely the same as the rest... which I'm starting to think doesn't mean what most of the forum thinks it does... the only problem I can find with TOR is it's not KOTOR 3.

KOTOR's fantastic. But it's game-play elements are quite a bit different form anything afterwards, very d20 and menu-based, little-to-no action. About the only thing that hasn't changed is the Real-Time Pause function, which is basically BioWare's bread and butter.

I mean the general attitude of never being happy with what bioware does. I swear the could spend 20 years making a perfect game with millions of choices and real consequences just for each and every fan... and they would whine it took too long... when their getting a game made just for them.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Bioware fan. Why else would I periodically come to gaming forums and express with other nerds about the huge, immersive franchises they've created.

I have a lot of respect for them from a gamers point of view. Their games have excellent value. However, they are dropping in quality and reliability, very quickly and suddenly.

I really hope Inquisition gets rid of the sour taste the lastest Bioware games (DA:2, TOR, ME3) have left. All are good games in their own right, but very, very flawed.

I'm happy with a lot of what Bioware does. It's why I'm here.

I also can get unhappy with some things they do. I guess at that point, there are two possible responses.

Blind, frothing nerd-rage. Screaming I will never buy another game, coming up with nasty names for EA, etc. But what does that achieve? Not much, at least not from my POV.

I prefer to identify the faults, provide constructive criticism, and suggest ways to improve the situation. I recognize it might be impossible, given different fan backgrounds, to reach solutions that please everybody, or at least most of everybody. However, I often point out win/wins that could work for everybody.

As I look at it, haters gonna hate. (Me doing that, I mean.) I do it anyway.

Fair enough, but when its the same complaints, same arguments, and the same fans game after game after game, it gets more than a little tedious.

I thought KOTOR had plenty of 'action'... meaning combat activity on the screen. It just was based, as many d20 games are, on attributes of the character, not the hand-eye skills and physical frenergy of the player slamming buttons.

But I can see where this will go ... as it often does.

Point. By 'action', I did mean hand-eye coordination and button play, as opposed to menu-based combat.

In terms of 'action scenes', yes KOTOR had more than a few.

But you are leaving out that cinematic presentation (DAO copies) and upgradeable weapons. Wait where have I seen upgradable weapons before?

So, the title is meant to be tongue in cheek.

I'm pleeasantly surprised noone seems to be using this as a criticism (yet)

It was pretty clear that the DA2 team took some design ideas from ME2, for better or worse. Dialog wheel, voiced protagonist, fixed protagonist, iconic looks to name a few.

So that got me thinking. What do you think DAI will 'borrow' from ME3? We've already seen hints of a few, such as:

Thedas/Galaxy at war
War assets/Agents
Weapon modifications (The PAX Crafting talk got into this, changing hilts etc)

Any more you can think of? Any that you would like to see, or not?

Just to get it out of the way, I really doubt Bioware would be foolish enough to tie multiplayer to Single player via the Agents (or any other way), at least I hope not.

In all honestly the dialoge wheel isn't from ME2, but mass effect 1, and even then alot of other games have dialoge wheels, so its not really something they "copied" from there own games. And its going to stick because I don't see consoles going away any time soon.

Also the voiced PC may just be a design change that they wanted to go in. The voiced PC in ME was a big enough hit that BW dicided to do it for the DA character.

As for the "Thedas/Galaxy at war" DA:O had a map, so in reality did ME copy from DA:O?? Maps in a RPG is honestly old as dirt so shouldn't be counted at all.

"War assests/Agents" There is a fundintal difference between the 2. in DA:I you will be spending Agents to do stuff, while with War assests are nothing but a collection of points to give you the different endings. Basicly the Agents are another currency.

Weapon modifactions have been around sense KotoR, so no real "borrowing" from the ME universe at all. Amd in fact you can say that ME3 is almost an exact copy of the KotoR system.

As for the "SP and MP" stuff for one we don't even know Da:I will have MP, So we really can't talk about it.

K. What we have come down to is you prefer action-RPGs, and I don't. See, from my POV, if you select a tactical strategy from a menu, and then let your character execute it, based on his skills, that is "taking an action".

I doubt our tastes or views are likely to influence each other, so there's no point to arguing further.

I think the dialogue wheel, the fully-voiced Player Character, the well-written characters, and morally complex choices will always be a hallmark of not only Mass Effect or Dragon Age, but all Bioware games in general.  As for gameplay?  I don't think much will be borrowed.  Inquisition is on an entirely different engine from both DA2 and ME3.  It's hard to borrow words written in another language.  The better question to ask is, "How much of Dragon Age Inquisition will be used in Mass Effect 4?"  Casey Hudson has already said that they are taking several core features from Dragon Age Inquisition for use in the next Mass Effect game.  Some may view this as bad, but I think it's a good thing.  When you don't have to start from scratch, you can put more focus into the rest of the game's development.

As for what is actually being borrowed from ME3, I think the new armor system in Inqusition is going to be inspired by the way armor worked in Mass Effect, but altered with a new crafting system.  By this I mean that the player would be able to pick the various pieces of his or her armor (i.e. shoulder pads, chestplates, leggings, grieves, arms, gaunlets, and helmets), but the the stats and appearance of each individual piece would be determined by how the item is crafted.  Anyone who has played Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (another EA game) would have some idea what I'm talking about.  I've heard that an Inquisition dev has been asking for Mass Effect 3 multiplayer feedback, which isn't too bad.  As for Agents and managing resources, I would think it would be more like Kenway's Fleet from Assassin's Creed IV than Galaxy At War.

I don't see where people are seeing this distinction between action RPG and whatever Origins is, because they're pretty much one the same. I for one am glad to see turn based die. I suppose the transition between PC and console does make a difference, which does present a bit of irony, since DA:O is gimped somewhat compared to DA2 on PS3 and XBox in that you're left to the whims of the team's AI more often.

Star fury wrote...

I get this impression around these parts that Dragon Age 2 is considered to be some kind of pestilence from which absolutely nothing should be borrowed. Thing is, what are the specific traits of Dragon Age 2 that are being borrowed, and why are they bad? I'm aware of complaints around things like paraphrasing in the dialogue wheel, autodialogue and so forth, but what else is there?

Hmm Shadowrun. Blackguard, (the new stargate game being made) are all "Turn based" and those games are new. So turn based as far from died my friend.

Well, let me point out one difference that makes a difference, although this will go in a different direction.

You may notice that there is a tabletop RPG version of Dragon Age, by Green Ronin publishing.
http://greenronin.com/dragon_age/

The only tabletop RPG version of Mass Effect is one being worked on by fans. There is no official one.
http://masseffectd6.blogspot.com

Why do you think that is? Could it be that one team is at least still trying to keep Dragon Age adhering to a computer-based instantiation of a tabletop RPG, and the other (Mass Effect) team is ... just making an action-CRPG?

P.S. turn-based is not what anyone's arguing for - at this point. Not when pause-and-play works just as well.
