The games take place after the events of the books (though the games are non-canon as far as the books are concerned). This is fairly clear in the second game where they reference events that happened in the book through flashbacks though there are also a lot of references in the first witcher.TheChris92 wrote...
Got a source for that? I've never, ever, heard anybody who's played the games mention it was a sequel. Just that the games are based on them, but the story is its own thing.Lord Aesir wrote...
I largely agree with your criticisms, but actually the Witcher game story is a sequel to the book story.Kurremurre wrote...
As a sidenote, I don't consider the story to be much credit to the game, even if it is as good as people seem to think. Considering the story was taken from an already existing book, the game adds absolutely nothing to our culture with its story; if I wanted to take part of just the story, I might as well read the book. It's like if I were to make a horrible animation based on Heart of Darkness, and claimed that it's good because, well, it's Heart of Darkness!
Why does The Witcher get so much praise?

I read all Witcher books, trust me, TW games follows what happened in the last book written by Sapkowski.TheChris92 wrote...

It's not "cannon" though, Sapkowski helped with some points of the lore (the map for instance), but he didn't acknowledge the games as being "cannon".
That being said, TW1 takes some themes, events and intrigues directly from the books. It looks like an adaptation of that while still being its sequel ("Alvin", the plot around Adda, etc. look like "reiterations" from the past). That's a very good idea for people who haven't or couldn't read the novels and it makes Geralt being "amnesic" more clever than it looks.

It's not a sequel in the author's eyes, but you can view it as such.

P.S Anyone who wants to fully grasp just how deep and complicated the plot is, I recommend reading KnightofPhoenix's blog posts "The Witcher 2 and politics." It's not that you need to be of a certain level to understand the plot, it's just that there are a lot of things that pass you by without you realising it until you actually look into it.

That is why I find the Witcher series to be one of the most mature games out there right now, in terms of the political aspects that they delve into, not that whole "sex cards" and "hey look nudity" bull****, that wasn't "mature" in the slightest.

Never played a Witcher game before, but from what I have seen TW3 looks freaking gorgeous. Cannot wait.

This reminds me... I'm gonna start a thread on this because I've been wondering...
What is the point of nudity and sex in any medium? Literature, movies, tv, games... yeah, might make for an interesting topic or it'll just crash and burn.
