I have only 5 true favorites right now. And they are all in my signature... Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing many other games, but none of them were even nearly amazing.

This doesn't seem easy. I have this feel it requires more than ten... Anyway, I'll make an attempt. As in impact when I played it.:

First is easy:

1: Morrowind.

2: Baldur's Gate (the entire saga)

3: FallOut 3 (fully expanded)

4: Dragon's Age: Origins.

5: Max Payne 1

6: Railroad Tycoon (Amiga version)

7: Master of Orion 2.

8: Vampires The Masquerade: Bloodlines

9: Far Cry (original)

10: Call of Duty (first game & expansion)

I've probably forgotten something, but whatever. With some amusement I see that Skyrim doesn't make it into the ten. Still love that game though,.. and Halflife,.. The first Tomb Raider games,.. Then there's the Icewind Dale games and original Fallouts,... I better stop.

Yeah, and I saw Descent and XCom: UFO on your list, but, you know, can't list them all, just ten. And then there's still MechWarrior and Wing Commander too,.. Anyway, I thought Descent 2 was better? But I frankly never got as far in that.

Your right though Descent 2 was the better game and Tie Fighter was a massive improvement on X-Wing.  Still the original games were just so impressive in what they were for the time they hold a lasting memory.  With the sequels the games were just more refined. Better yes, just not as jaw dropping as you already knew what you were going to get.

Plus you can't beat some nostalgia on a list like this

10. Battlefield 3 ---my entry point into the Battlefield franchise, I was immersed in the atmosphere of combat, the sounds, management of recoil, suppression, bullet drop and teamwork. Lots of fun gadgets and weapons. Great maps like Caspian Border, Kharg Island and Operation Firestorm.

9. Metroid Prime ---a fantastic game that was polished, diverse, full of exploration and upgrades, and uniquely gritty for what it was. Samus Aran showed her eyes, and metroids sucked your face in the dark.

8. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask ---not perfect, but a unique Zelda game that was fun and satisfying. Collecting all of the masks was difficult.

7. Super Mario Bros. ---what can be said about this classic? Super Mario Bros. for the original Nintendo Entertainment System was a great game. Legendary platformer.

6. Mass Effect ---I instantly fell in love with Mass Effect. The best writing I ever saw in a game, and a brilliant story. Fun stat based combat both action and tactical, tremendous characters including Sovereign and its puppet, a victim named Saren, and a lot to do and to explore. Cool classes, too.

5. Perfect Dark ---this shooter was amazing, and had very fun multiplayer and a good single player. Weapons were terrific, and each had two functions. Shoot the powerful Dragon based off the SCAR-H, then choose toss it away, actually making it a proximity mine. Use the laptop gun as a high powered smg/assault hybrid, or deploy it as a sentry turret. Loved this game.

4. Dark Souls ---after deciding to give this game a try, I was sucked in whole by the atmosphere and challenge. This rpg has intense, thick as butter atmosphere that cannot be duplicated or replaced. Great exploration, precise combat, unique loot, hidden secrets in abundance, zero hand holding. Phenomenal bosses. Varied environments. Awesome enemies. Those who played it know about it's atmosphere, just amazing.
