I think the writers were going for fish out of water.  She had never interacted with humans before, never been in a city, had grown up traveling with the clan, and struggled to adapt to the changes.  She was naive because she was ignorant of human society.

JMHO.

I thought she was ok as a joke character, many of the things she said were funny, it's the fact that she's sooooooo stupid, is the same level of stupid after living in the city for 8 years coupled with her arrogance, the fact that she knows better than you, the keeper, her whole clan, and common knowledge (demons=bad) about demons and blood magic. Stupid and arrogant is a horrible combination. I feel like they had a joke character and they tacked on the blood magic/demons/etc...to try to make her more interesting. I wish we could have murder knifed her or made her tranquil. I guess you can only kill her in combat if you side with the Templars.

Howe was just a sweet death to me. I hated Loghain as well but Howe hit on a personal note, he slaughtered your whole family and then had the audacity to rub it in and insult your parents. I just wish as a Cousland you could said, "no, you deserve much less" right before decapitating him. Also, I hated Quentin and wished we go a nice cut scene of Hawke finishing him off with decapitation or as a mafe, ripping him to shreds.

I don't know how you could possibly think Merrill was stupid, she's pretty obviously a freakin' savant in certain areas. Merrill is much more aptly described as having high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome. It makes her awkward and unaware in social situations.

The thing about Merrill is that she's right. Keeper Marethari was a well-intentioned idiot whose lack of confidence in Merrill cost her life and, unless you pick exactly the right response, the lives of her entire clan. Merrill was a careful researcher, never trusted any spirit, and knew enough to ask for help and back-up when she needed it. The demon was no threat to Merrill, especially with Hawke along.

Merrill's awkwardness, clumsiness, and cluelessness regarding social interaction and city life isn't just endearing, it makes her accessible and vulnerable. If she were that smart and capable without those limiting characteristics, she would have been too much of a Mary Sue, even for a Dragon Age game.

Just love when merill fanboys tell how she is intelligent and wouldn't fell to demon when she is  (in worst possible way even more than hawke) and she fell to demon in fade already and was nothing more than plaything for second demon.... 

To be honest at first treated her nothing more than joke character because she was that attempts bio making her serious character after showing that she was completely making only stupid decisions were confusing.She was soo stupid that she didn't even know that her actions have consequences despite that everyone was telling her that...

I can easily label her as one of most dumb characters in dragon age universe that we saw crap it was mirracle that she could speak...

Well, you didn't call her an idiot. You called her retarded, which is a terrible insult whether someone is actually mentally handicapped or not. So I think using such phrases can cause you to come off as mad.
