I don't know how you could possibly think Merrill was stupid, she's pretty obviously a freakin' savant in certain areas. Merrill is much more aptly described as having high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome. It makes her awkward and unaware in social situations.
The thing about Merrill is that she's right. Keeper Marethari was a well-intentioned idiot whose lack of confidence in Merrill cost her life and, unless you pick exactly the right response, the lives of her entire clan. Merrill was a careful researcher, never trusted any spirit, and knew enough to ask for help and back-up when she needed it. The demon was no threat to Merrill, especially with Hawke along.
Merrill's awkwardness, clumsiness, and cluelessness regarding social interaction and city life isn't just endearing, it makes her accessible and vulnerable. If she were that smart and capable without those limiting characteristics, she would have been too much of a Mary Sue, even for a Dragon Age game.

While I initially hesitated to dignify your 'response' with a correction, well... what the hell.
Merrill warns you before you take her into the fade that she might not be up to the challenge of facing a demon on its own turf. In that situation, almost every possible member of your party can betray you, so it is pure manure to single out Merrill for criticism. Nothing in DA2 or related media can support the notion that Merrill would have been umprepared or particularly vulnerable to the Sundermount demon, and in fact it appears Merrill was in complete control of her interaction with that demon right up until Marethari did something very stupid.
Your criticism of Merrill, filled with insults and devoid of insight, reflects very poorly on you without tarnishing her character in the slightest.

I actually hated her more than Petrice.
My second time through, I was really trying to see if there was a Murderknife option I missed. Petrice was annoying, but I found her (and her story arc) interesting at least. Grace feels like another character that was a b*tch no matter your choice due to needing another fight. I wanted to get rid of her before she became a problem.

I've always regretted that Arl Howe's role wasn't bigger, since Tim Curry really stuck the landing on that one. Vaughn is definitely a favorite to kill. The Tevinter Magister Caladrius is another baddie that I love to hate, but although I've occasionally killed him, for the most part I just let him go after issuing an asswhipping; he's got style enough to win me over!

On Merrill
I don't believe for a second that she had it under control or that she would have been fine against the demon but I wouldn't call her retarded.
She was just being manipulated and she was very naive. She did very stupid things because all she cared about was recovering her people's lost history. Marethari did a very stupid thing because all she cared about was Merrill.
To me it said sometimes people behave irrationally about things they really really care about and DA2 was all about the extremes. So many Characters were Guilty of this and Merrill was just another example.
I don't think she was that much dumber than most of the other characters it's just that people make a big deal about her because of the Blood Mage/Demon thing.

Grace was cool. I thought she was hot so I killed her boyfriend to get some of that action but DA2's lack of casual sex stopped me there. I think I DA2 was less linear, you woulnt have need to kill her in Act 3. Maybe if she escapes, she returns to Kirkwall to help you against the templars.

here there is no companion such dumb like merril she is so stupid that she sell youi mean even mooron or naive person that don't know how world works wouldn't do that it is just retarded... Doing 1 stupid thing is
understandable character bulit on them is joke character and sadly they wanted her to be serious character when even codex shows how dumb she is and mocks her stupidity...
About blood mage part to be honest i support her opinion about blood magic but i don't think that someone as stupid as her would use it properly without being screwd by demons smarter than her tried and failed...

I dunno, I kind of ignored allot of the "Merrill not understanding anything" stuff because it seemed to just be there for comedy purposes. I guess you could atribute allot of it to her being dalish and obviously not understanding human culture or behaviour but I take your point.
I am still hoping for a reasonable blood mage character who isn't the PC. I suppose there was Avernus but even he is a bit nuts.

To be honest her being dalish is weak excuse becausing other culture don't make you retarded i mean we saw many dalish elves and they were even close to being stupid as merril and dalish warden didn't had any problems (but he was pc so we can avoid him/her as example) so maybe velanna who was much clever than merrill (i wouldn't tell smart yet) he had some idiot moment but not even near to merril.
As far malcolm (hawke father) is only "good" blood mage who had brain jowan , merril and alain were idiots but more moral blood mages... i would put avernus as rather dark character than noble blood mage...

I just finished up a(nother) Dalish Elf origin a couple of days ago. I was a little surprised to see just how normal and intelligent Merrill seemed in DAO. It had been years since my first DE run, so I didn't think much of her drastic personality change, until now. Playing through it again reminded me of just how different the two Merrills are.mikeymoonshine wrote...
True although Velanna was very outgoing Merrill is that kind of shy where she is almost forcing herslef to not understand anything.
But ok I give in, she is an idiot but I think most of that was down to writing, She could have been a reasonably intelligent character on the wrong path but she was played for laughs too much. It's a shame because Varric and Isabela are funnier and they are both reasonably intelligent.

Ha, I did the same thing. I was outraged that I had to wait until act 3 to kill her...how dare Bioware make me wait! A liquefy option should immediately pop up for all characters I hate, period.Starsyn wrote...
