I can't really say anything that hasn't been already said,

On Merill I see her as naive to the extreme though it doesn't have to end badly, a rival friendship/romance actually ends up quite well no need to kill her clan either.

I feel like the writers were going for an air headed anime stereotype with her because it's "cute" or "gigglesquee!" They could have made her interesting by cutting out the gigglesquee and making her actually naive and actually interested in her people's history. Her personal quests could have been delving into ruins for research and answers, uncovering and trying out elven magic rituals (not blood magic) etc...Rather than staring at and making no progress with the same broken mirror for 8 years.

True, there's plenty of missed opportunity with her but at the very least if you rivalmance/friendship her you can get her to A) Give up on Blood Magic and the Mirror and B) Do so without killing her entire clan. There is at least SOME growth and level of maturation there. As opposed to say Anders who is the same whiny ****** throughout the entire game.

Kirkwall makes it hard to support either side.

And yet it was for the most part the game that drew the line in the sand between the fans :P

I don't usually like to meta game, but after playing the city elf origin all my characters murder knife Vaughn. Nicholas Boutan (sp?) does a terrific death gargle :)

Yes.  I leave him alive most of the time, unless I'm playing a City Elf.  Then he meets Ms. Murderknife.

There have been quite a few people who have NEEDED to die. Howe makes top 5 on my list of most fun to kill, Anders less so because that was more of a betrayal. No one tops this person though:

I don't think I've ever wanted to kill a fictional character so badly in my life. F*** this guy.

Honorable mention goes to Grace.

After EVERYTHING Hawke did to help her sorry butt out, she turns on you. I wanted her dead so badly.

Wait. You can only save her clan if you have rivalry with Merrill? So with friendship you always have to kill them?

Wait, what?

You can save her clan no matter if you're a rival or a friend. Just accept responsibility for the Keeper's death and you can walk out of there.

@Star, with my Cousland and Amell, I released him because of humane reasons and the landsmeet. I haven't gotten far with my city elf play through, I onlu got to Ostagar so I neef to go back and finish that play through.

All it took was the origin of the City Elf Warden and the guy dies.  My Amell and Cousland just leave him in there to rot.  I don't need his vote for the Landsmeet, since I usually get a perfect score on it anyhow.  Everyone sides with the Wardens, except for the noble that will always side with Loghain no matter what.

Ser Cauthrien right before the Landsmeet.

That cow signed her death warrant the minute she opened her trap about how I was bringing chaos to Ferelden by supporting Alistair as king and how she was going to stop me from attending the Landsmeet..

I think I ended up selling the sword she drops.  Image IPB

A lot of others mentioned NPCs I can't stand, but just for the sake of throwing my 0.02 in:

Origins:
-Loghain (arrogant and cocky, the whole b.s. about his patriotism is a farce)
-Howe (pretty obvious)
-Arl Vaughn (...ugh...)
-Isolde ("who EEES this man/woman Teagan?", and the sneer that goes along with it)
-Oghren (my eyebrows were raised with 'return of a fan favorite' when Awakening was advertised)
-Zevran (crapload of negative stereotypes bunched into one character..., I don't hate him but I do dislike him, one of those characters that grew LESS on me over time)
-Eadric ("excuse me, you're in my light")
-Zathrian

Awakening:
-Velanna (enough said...)
-Guy

DA2:
-Anders (needs no explanation)
-Sister/Mother Petrice (manipulative witch)
-Ginnis (her attitude stinks as much as she does, needs some soap asap)
-Grace (her name is a serious misnomer)
-Gamlen (...)
-Seneschal Bran (stuck up twit)
-Quentin (combat alone is not satisfactory, needed a real epic death scene)
-The male Dalish guard on Sundermount that 'greets' you upon first arrival

After giving it some thought, I think the character I most loved to hate and kill was the Arishok.

Howe was a great villain because of Tim Curry's voice, but he didn't really get enough screen time. The Architect honestly I just hated and killed without any love. The Arishok, though... he really added a lot to the game. He was a creepy narcissistic cult leader, surrounded by unquestioning fanatic drones. Despite all that, he was intelligent and you couldn't help but respect him. The fact that you get to take him down in single combat adds to the satisfaction of ending his reign as cult leader, even if the cult itself continues on.

I was a little disappointed that Ser Cauthrien could not be convinced to see reason.

She can at the landsmeet, cannot in Howe's estate.

Interesting. I guess I missed something or didn't have a high enough score to get her to stand down peacefully.

Yes, your persuade score has to be pretty high to make her stand down...but her blind allegiance to Loghain always grates on my nerves.

Personally, I always wanted Cautherin as a companion. I really liked her despite how little she was onscreen. Perhaps she'll be an agent or something.

It's not blind allegience if she admits to questioning his motives.
