I was never mad about the game, but time won't make it a better product. It's still a let-down. The writing in ME3 just didn't live up to Bioware's history. Not that their games were perfect, but they all had a well-rounded feeling to them (their great characters always eclipsed any weak spots).

This is pretty much how I felt. ME3 was good but it lacked that classic Bioware polish. Pretty much the same with DA2. Both games seem to suffer from being rushed. BioWare has always crafted these fantastic stories that you wanted to experience over and over.

ME3 just didn't live up to that, which I guess frustrates fans because you have to wonder how a company that managed to get something right so many times in the past just all of sudden starts getting it wrong.

To OP: Nope. I don't hate ME3.I don't like the ending choices/consequences and I never will be comfortable with the catalyst character.

My ideal ending would be to destroy the catalyst AI which in return destroys the Reapers or at least makes them non-combative. They could have added another 20 - 45 minutes of gameplay to find the AI's blue box while fending off any Reaper forces and destroy the box. {Of course, some medigel would be nice to have since Shepards Omnitool still works} Lastly, I want to have a talk with Harby which leaves a cliffhanger or segue (perhaps) to the next game.

The AI's "blue box"?

Riiight....

I imagine the hardware/ "blue box" is heavily integrated with the Citadel somehow. Or is the Citadel. That's assuming the Catalyst has always been there and is part of the original design. I still keep open the possibility that it's still Sovereign, who hijacked the place somehow ("I am Sovereign, and this station is mine."). It could be that what we interact with at the end is part of the Catalyst hardware. Not just the Crucible. In which case, we are destroying or modifying the blue box already.

I thought about something similar only my idea involved overloading the Crucible's reactors causing it to melt down and self-destruct, destroying itself along with the Citadel and the Catalyst.

It's still abrupt but at least there will be one of those cool reactor room fights.

Disappointed, bitter apathy more like. It has its great moments, but by and large, its an incarnate realization of the decline of BioWare in general.

I'd say DA2 and ME3 are the "incarnate realization of the decline of BioWare in general".

Responding OP's question: I never hated it, ME Trilogy are the best games I ever played, on the other hand ME3 endings ARE pure trash. They stink so bad that BW can't even go public with the next plot out of fear.

So true. Actually I think they can't go public because they screwed the ending up so massively that they can't figure out how to go forward. And honestly, I don't think they initially planned on going past 3 games but when they made the third and saw it was technically the most successful of the three I believe, they decided to go for more, but by then they had already screwed the galaxy. I believe the only reason they did the ending cut DLC was because they wanted to salvage what they could of their new cash cow.

Let's face it, they already are playing the new ME. Casey Hudson posts about this on twitter. It was not hard to just move forward even with a new game engine because it's already something they have to in place. But I really don't think they ever intended to move past three when they were making it the third. Or at least if they did, they didn't foresee the problems their ending would present in doing so. That was some serious writing ones self into a corner. So now they cannot release the story because I believe they probably have yet to come up with one.

This is what worries me the most about ME4. At this point it seems like they're making it not because anyone wants to expand upon the Mass Effect universe, but because it has a title that will make money. Because of that I think many of the decisions as far as the story is concerned will be made for block buster reasons. There will be a big bad large-scale conflict, lots of cutscenes, multiplayer, etc. It might be better than ME3 just because they'll try to avoid some of the larger complaints like dialogue and Kai Leng (hey maybe they'll fix the weapons in cutscenes!) but the game will only be a Mass Effect game in title. Hopefully I'm wrong or it will turn at to be a decent game.

I'm somewhat hopeful that bioware has figured out that they can't afford to trash either DA:I or ME-next without placing the entire company in serious danger. I also think that bioware has figured out that as long as mass effect 4 (or what ever it turns out to be) is a solid title it will be well accepted. though I could also be deluding myself too.

I strongly doubt that this is correct, given where they're at with the technical work (level design and motion-capture).

I came to love the characters so much that I don't really know how I'll feel about all new ones. Honestly, I never really connected with most of me ME2 characters. Some people really love them but they were there for one game and I  didn't really feel much connection to any of them. Most people hate Miranda, but while I didn't really like her character specifically, I did bring her on many if not most of my missions due to her sentinel structure which made her highly useful and versatile (killing mechs, trashing shields and warping collectors esp. the boss ones). That kind of made me really like her because she was often on my team and that created a sense of having a bond even though I though she was too much with the pity party while having a lot still going for her. Legion is one I really loved but he was hardly in it. What a waste! Thane was likable and I had him on several missions. Good build. Mordin grew on me. The rest didn't really matter much to me though maybe their biotics like shockwave or pull field, throw field could come in handy with husks on collector ship/base missions. ME1 had character development with ALL of the characters. Might not have liked them but they felt like my crew. ME2 - too many and with only two powers for half the game, that was kind of lame. Maybe 3 with a bonus and a passive would have been better because there were some that felt pretty useless to me. And the dialogues just never helped me bond with them. Notice I didn't even mention Jacob because frankly, he's unmentionable and I will be sending him into the vents in every future game I do.

This is why I'm on the fence about ME V4.0 - because I just don't know if they will be able to really bring me into the story like I was with this trilogy and to me, it was very much about how connected I felt to my shepard along with the characters and the story. The gameplay in ME3 was awesome and I might just get it for their MP to be honest if it's part of the game, but I'm not really trusting them on the story anymore after the mess that was ME3. It was good in some areas, but mostly it was too many cut scenes and very little time with my squaddies in coversation, and then a really bad ending to a trilogy I loved. And those side cerberus missions got old very fast. Very, very fast since you faced them in the first two main mssions as well (Mars/tuchunka). I was happy to see the geth.

From what I understand after chatting with long-running veterans of BioWare's "fans", people have been saying this kind of thing since the KOTOR days, even in regards to the first Mass Effect.

Inquisition has David Gaider as lead writer.

Just like the previous two games.

I'm not worried. DA2 was not a bad game, it just fell short of Origins.

But mass effect won people over in the first game. The second game did well too though people didn't like the swith off the reapers to the collectors, but it still worked pretty well. A lot of people do still like ME3 or at least they love the MP part of it so that will benefit ME4. I think we have to consider that there are a massive number of people that just buy games to play them and don't really consider the story much. That seems to be who ME3 wants to pander to now.

In comparison to other games, especially ME2, Mass Effect 3 is definitely still story-driven and character-driven.

It's even a better RPG than ME2 in many areas.

I wouldn't mind a lot of refined ideas of ME3, but put back into another theme/setting like ME2.. Something where you get more hubs, slower pacing, some intrigue, more individual character stories... In ME3, you kind of already know everyone and it's a big war story. It's more like the "all business" take on Mass Effect. No time for meandering around. The main plot is the big thing here.

People should look back at Origins release-era threads. It was probably the worst RPG ever and an affront to BG2 fans, or so this forum would have had you believe. Now look at the pedestal fans have erected in its honor. Once you see this cycle repeat itself a few times it's hard to take the Chicken Littles seriously.

With that being said, there's a certain natural equilibrium of whining from a fanbase, and ME3 was definitely an anomaly in that respect. However, without the endings, it would have had about the same amount as ME1 or ME2. Hence why there is no general downward trend of BW games: they made one big miscalculation, but did so much right that they can incorporate into the next game.

As StreetMagic's post details, with the Reaper war finished they have the freedom to draw on anything from the three previous games and see if they can incorporate it into a cohesive whole. My bet would be on a character-driven narrative with a stand-alone story that largely keeps the gameplay and leveling trees of ME3. This will create a lot of goodwill from those disappointed in ME3's story direction while buying them time to figure out where they want the series to go. If it does well enough, that might BE the series going forward. In which case, preorder everytime from me.

My old score for ME3 was like a 7 and now with a different state of mind, id say a fairer score from me would be a 8.5. The whole package of the story, some moment of brilliance, strong music, strong scenary, stellar voice acting and until the ending, solid story telling.

The story telling was weak from the start. The reapers and TIM were given idiot balls, a 'reaper off button' superweapon was introduced far too late in the saga, Cerberus were transformed into a galactic empire who distracted from the main reaper plot, the geth were turned into Pinocchio (losing all of the originality that they had as a 'species' in the previous games), there were unfired Chekhov's guns that had been set up in previous titles (Haestrom's sun, batarian rebellion etc.), and some of the biggest decisions from previous games had almost no consequences relating to the story other than slightly modifying the war asset score (collector base, rachni, geth heretics).

I find the game's story rather indefensible to be honest. There are some great moments in the narrative, but many more gaping flaws.

I don't see how anyone could have so easily condemned Origins.. Not if they were already Bioware fans. It had a lot of the old formula there. I know some peeps complained about the move away from isometric style of NWN and BG (they did that with NWN2 as well), but Origins was still very much a successor to those games and of KotoR. You know when you're playing a Bioware game.. and Origins was definitely one of them.

Mass Effect and Jade Empire I can understand though. They were quite different from what came before.

I don't either, and yet it happens, and happened again with ME3. When ME4 is released, you'll start seeing threads about how much better ME3 did X. It seems unlikely now, but it always does. That's because what you don't hear now is the voice of those content with ME3. Therefore when the next game does something different that they don't like, they'll pop in to post their opinion about it. I have no doubt this will happen with Inquisition as well, where DA2 will suddenly start seeing more love than it did during the entirety of its relevance.

You won't see me change my opinions on ME3 at least. I only have a problem with ME2 character treatment. I'll never budge on it.. because I love those characters (I essentially hate something because I love something else about Mass Effect). I have nothing to complain about the game's general design though (I hate some levels quite a bit however). And I'm getting tired of hearing about the Ending. It drowns out any other sort of comment or criticism.

I do hate Omega DLC, though.
