Nah, 2% of a train wreck is like the caboose coming unhitched from the rest of the train as it goes around a corner, and (ultimately) harmlessly rolling off the track and into the ditch. No one on the caboose at the time is hurt; they're all just p*ssed about not getting to their next stop.
As has been mentioned several times before though, the ending is perhaps the single most important part of a story.
Have a great ending and it will make people ignore even the greatest of flaws with what came before. A bad ending will make people look back at the rest of the product far more critically than they otherwise would.
Now if the ending of Mass Effect 3 had been great then would people have been so bothered about the comedy animations or eavesdropping side-quests for example?
You can't separate an ending from the rest of the story. It's part of it.
Good points from both – no disagreement for sure. I tend to believe that the entire gaming industry has taken note of this colossal industry blunder -- and with megabucks at stake, they are careful not to repeat.
But look what we have to work with…
I’d like to shoot the guy who said “if life gives you a lemon, make lemonade” ... but that doesn’t make the LEMON go away or make us LIKE it so “don’t shoot the messenger”, (me) okay?. In my view, there is no IDEAL solution we can work with. Bioware has likely turned a deaf ear to us after reading a million frustrated [paying] customers.
So I follow what lots of folks do: since the endings are known to be disgusting, why continue whipping ourselves? To each their own, but for me -- I play up to reaching the beam. Playing further is just a waste of time (IMHEO).

As far as BW are concerned, not liking the endings is our problem not their's.
We were just lucky that they were feeling charitable and tried to help us out with the EC.
People who still didn't 'get it' after the EC, well hey, BW can't be held responsible for people not appreciating the art right?

I have mixed feelings about ME3.
On my first playthrough I thought it was the best game of the series until I got to the endings. The original endings however couldn't have been any worse. I'm still not quite sure what the lead writers were thinking. DLC like the Extended Cut and Leviathan made the endings more palatable for me, and while I'm still not crazy about the endings and think it was the weakest finale of the series, I can at least live with High EMS Destroy after DLC. The DLC did manage to salvage the series for me, as without the Extended Cut and Leviathan I probably would have no interest in playing another ME game.

I still wouldn't go with "best game ever" up until the endings, but it was good. As has been mentioned above there were problems before then, but they weren't big enough to turn it into a negative experience until that point. Like the bad bits in the previous two games I could grit my teeth, get through them, then mostly forget about them. Even a really hugely bad bit like the ending would've had the same effect if it had happened in mid-game (let's face it objectively the opening isn't much better), just as long as that wasn't where it finished. The big problem is the last part being a part I couldn't get anything satisfying from and being the last part there was nothing after to shove it into just another bit of backstory.

I never hated the game & I love the control ending. I never had a problem with the post Extended Cut endings. Before the EC the endings were a huge WTF??? I don't understand why people still have a problem with the endings after the EC.
My problem is fact that this game is so awesome it has made me not like most other games. This is the only game I ever want to play now. I've been playing it since day 1 & there's still tons of stuff I missed. I've been through ME3 so many times & I still find something new every single time. And I'm also seeing tons of stuff I missed on Youtube. I can't believe it! It doesn't seem possible. Can't say that about any other game. ME3 managed to ruin all other video games for me.
Bioware created something light years ahead of all the other video game companies & I don't think they deserve any of the crap they've received from the fans. IMO all of you haters giving them non-stop crap over the endings should be ashamed of yourselves. This series is totally phenomenal/extraordinary. I'm totally disgusted with the people that still won't STFU about the endings. I'm disgusted with them because I don't want to live in world where people are so hateful & overly critical & only concentrate on the negative constantly. People like that make life in the real world a living hell. I don't want to be around you, you bring me down & depress me. But I can't escape you, you're everywhere, too many of you. You're the real Reapers that I have to deal with from day to day! You make me sick!
Bioware & Mass Effect rule! HATERS SUCK!
So what you're saying is that we should all just shut up if we didn't like the endings?
You do realize that you're speaking from a point of privilege? Because you had fun and enjoyed the endings, you can't fathom that others did not. I am not hateful, nor am I overly critical. I am probably one of the nicest people you've never met (because I know me, and I'm very nice to everyone irl).
I can understand that people enjoyed the endings, and I will always envy them that. I wish I was one of them. I really do.
But I'm not.
Does that make me a bad person? For wanting something lighter than only bittersweet (if that) as a possible end to the 5 year journey? As it is now, I can't even stomach the thought of a new playthrough, because what's the point?
I don't blame you for being angry at the critique and vitriol being directed at something you loved. It's actually understandable. Going the other way and saying all those who didn't like the endings (and won't shut up) are "hateful & overly critical & only concentrate on the negative constantly. People like that make life in the real world a living hell" is not helping though.

I do not hate it, I like it somewhat... somewhat. It is similar to my opinion Star Wars: Episode I -- I do not hate it -- i like it somewhat... somewhat. I on purposely put emphasis on the word somewhat. Keep in mind that I am a Star Wars geek so all Star Wars appeals to me in some way. Regardless, I have not played it recently. I only mainly play 1 and 2, though. Once every other play-through I will go to the 3rd one. Sense I play Mass Effect once a week I go through play-through's fast. I think I am on my 4th or 5th one right now. They should have added more DLC to the story.

It's a love-hate thing Mike, I have such a relationship with the game myself! ![]()
There are some aspects that I genuinely think are the best of the series. Sadly, they go hand in hand with other aspects where I think they're the worst.
It doesn't help that you have things that could easily have been genius at work, but ultimately proved completely pointless as it got fumbled.

If I did actually hate the game, I wouldn't have the number of playthroughs I have and a good chance I would never of joined bsn shortly after ME3 released. The other reason I continue to play ME3 and the other 2 is because other games haven't really interested me. I've played a few, but not enough to stop playing ME.
The orignal endings had me throw my arms in the air wondering where the closure is. What happend to this character and that character? It took me 3 full playthroughs to realize Shepard can live. Of course I had to play multiplayer for which I'm not a fan. But the worst part was the flashbacks in the original ending that I got. I later checked that I wasn't the only one who got the same flashbacks. Apparently Bioware cared more about certain characters then the one's that people romanced.
Along come's the extended cut and fixed that. Out of all the things the ec did right, it was the flashbacks. It was good to see Samantha instead of .......... I like what it did with destroy. The other 2 I don't care about or 3 if you count refuse. Even with the exteneded cut, there's still no closure for Shepard. If anything, I wouldn't mind seeing Shepard return just to have closure to her story. I'm sure that's wishful thinking on my part. Whatever.

I didn't hate Mass Effect 3 just didn't like some of the designs, like the journal was very vague and kept scrolling itself to the bottom so when I checked it I'd have to scroll it back to the top.
I didn't like the fact that I didn't really have many Paragon/Renegade choice moments throughout the game and instead watched Shepard talk.
It did get me emotional when I lost friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the Citadel DLC as my Party's had almost everyone sitting on the couch for the group photo.
What annoyed me the most is that Starchild is the kid from the beginning and the vent, I live here in the Citadel and am older than spit but I look like a kid who was killed in a shuttle and I look human. If your going to be some Control unit for Reapers at least try an look ancient and scary, instead of cute and annoying.
An I liked even less that the endings were A B C D and color coded and was mentioned in a interview we wouldn't get those types of endings and Bam game releases and we got those types of endings.
Also Co-op sucks now with all the cheaters so actually get a high EMS rating is impossible for any future play throughs unless you have good friends who enjoy running with you, my friends all sold their copy's of the game back to Gamestop or any pre owned used DVD/Game store.
So I played through the entire game three times and haven't looked back for my last game my ending's stopped at the beam as anything past that is ridiculous.
But I still play ME1 & 2 loved both of those and I'm actually happy with just ending my series after ME2.
