Yes, I agree with the above. Also, no kill runs made possible ala deus Ex/Thief alongside full on murderous playthroughs that make Crysis 3 and GOW look like viva piñata....options are good

Also, I'd like to add another thing. I specified why the character / protagonist should be a newbie (not necessarily a teenager). You can evolve from someone who has never hold a gun in his hands to:
- an expert in weapons and a bonafide badass (maybe bounty hunter / merc / archeologyst) - renegade version with several layers of ruthlesness: sometimes spares people sometimes murder people either way helps (I think Mordin said this once)
- an expert in stealth and infiltration that is focused on preserving ideals regarding the importance of life of course with layers of correctness like: I only kill in self defense, or I never kill (kinda like Batman does it) - it would be awesome to have a character that doesn't kill and by the end of the game will be very conflicted on what to do in order to survive further

In any case or type of character, you have Lara Croft (the new game) evolution going from someone who's a rookie to someones who knows what he's doing and what he wants. This will also work very well with the renegade scars for example.

I don't think it'd be drastic.

If you want actual stealth gameplay then the changes will by necessity have to be drastic. The enemy AI will need to be rewritten to include patrols, search and detection. The level design will have to be altered to provide multiple paths to an objective. Be prepared to get your Thane on as you vent crawl across the galaxy. The lighting, sound design or both will need to be revamped as well depending on how detection will be implemented. Will you be able to hide in shadows? Will the sound of your foot steps reveal your location? There's always the option of doing it like they did in the Arrival DLC, but why would anyone want that?

I'm not calling it to be a stealth game. I'm wondering about the addition of stealth elements.

You're making the mistake of thinking I want ME4 to be lauded as the best stealth game of the year, or at least it looks like you are.

ME2 added the minimum of stealth, in DLC. It was really bleh but there.
ME3 added a bit more of stealth, in DLC. It was meh, but alright for where it was (kinda).

ME4 would take some lessons from that an simply incorporate that into main missions. Same as how I bet Bioware learned from the Mako and Hammerhead and will be trying vehicles in the main game of ME4.

Not even the whole game.

I think you can add stealth mechanics as in: if I take this alternate route or melee this guy instead of shooting him I can avoid alerting everyone else.

Yeah.

I don't think they'd go outright 'no combat at all' route for general design. At least not yet in the series.

But some alternate ways of doing things, and a base design that allows it instead of shoehorning it into DLC? Hmm possible. No matter what, I'm pretty sure that except maybe in certain missions, you'd have to clear the room of enemies. 'Stealth' doesn't always mean 'no violence'.

Making ME a stealth game would be a mistake. They could add stealth elements if the environments and the story support it but adding stealth just for the sake of it is just not right.
Look at DA2 dlc(the one with the elf woman) where they just stuck some stealth onto it. IT was not good.

It would absolutely have to fit the story and level design, while also empowering/evolving the overall combat.

I don't think it'll ever be something like "go into the vents and avoid all enemies in every area" lol.

Well maybe like ME7 or something. Not now!

Considering the standard time to develop a game of 3 years, ME7 would come out by 2024, if by then they havent solved such obvious gameplay problems it would mean a much deeper problem.

Well yeah. :P

I'm going to be very hypothetical here.

Let's say ME1-3 focuses on (especially in ME2-3) the fundamentals of game design for what is 'Mass'.
I'd really appreciate, in this example, for a M_4-6 to evolve those fundamentals, and also expand beyond them, even if it's not always done, or always mandatory, or always a big deal. Mass Effect IS a TPSRPG, but it can be more than that without harm done.
And then for a M_7-9 (2020s), yeah, the fundamentals better be friggin perfected, and the exploration done and polished enough that these games can then be interesting and good enough to show the full potential of the franchise, instead of falling into a rut and only being milked for its last moneys.

This is my ideal view. We'll see if it even matters, haha.
