Hey guys,

I've just installed Mass Effect for the first time in my life and I've trouble to decide for a class.
The following may sounds dumb to you but I want to make the gameplay feel like a breeze. My work is challenging enough, I want to lean back and relax while playing. :D
I like to shoot a lot and I don't like to use a lot of abilities (which need to be activated over and over again). I read that the pistol offers the highest DPS. This is great because I love this little bullet-spraying thing. So I thought Infiltrator is a good choice because I also get the ability to open chests and the like which seems to be a nice addition, not to be dependent to party members.
But Soldier seems to be more a run'n'gun character (my cup of tea) and Vanguard too but with an additional biotics coolness factor.

Any advice is welcome. :)

For this one you can always turn down the difficulty.

Basically you just summarized the main points of those classes yourself. Now you need to decide which factors are the most important to you personally.

Soldier class is all about guns, but you have to take a tech with you if you want to open stuff. Infiltrator gives you a full choice on who to take with you, but it also gives you the sniper rifle specialization for added fun (SRs are almost useless if you don't have the specialization). Soldiers and Infiltrators both have access to Immunity which makes you very hard to kill.

If you set your party tactics to full-auto (not recommended for higher difficulties), you won't have to manually micromanage their abilities either.

Well, first I thought I go with assault rifles but pistols seem to be the better assault rifles. Then I thought sniper rifles sound awesome but they seem pretty underwhelming and I read that there are only a few situations where a SR is your best bet.
Now there are just two weapons left: pistol and shotgun. Infiltrator seems to be the best class for specializing in pistols. I haven't used shotties that often yet because shooting from distance and hiding seems more beneficial (with Soldier and Infiltrators). But I assume this weapon coupled with a Vanguard is a deadly combination. Now I have to decide between these two classes - Infiltrator and Vanguard.

Which class offers the more varied gameplay (combat)? Which is more survivable?

The same applies to shotguns.

Note that this changes for ME2 and 3. Your choice of weapons offers quite a bit of tactical differences in those games.

I'd say they are about equal, just different. Infiltrator is a long-range focused (SR) techie, Vanguard is short-ranged focused (shotgun) biotic.

Which is more survivable?

Infiltrator is a bit more durable due to Immunity.

Thanks.

I'll play the Infiltrator. The Vanguard seems to be more action-packed but the advantages of the Inf might suit my likings better.

At lower difficulty levels (I normally play on casual because I do not care for the gameplay) you can pick any class and do fine. (Really, the battles in ME1 are boring shoot-the-horde fests and the controls are clunky as all get-out.) I normally go Infiltrator because of the sniper rilfe, though you could go Vanguard with sniper rifle as your bonus specialization.

Basically Soldier and Infiltrator are probably the most "shooty" classes.

Soldier can potentially train for every weapon class, and they don't really have any powers that affect targets directly. And in fact, Soldier won't quite do as high pistol or sniper DPS as the Infiltrator. The difference is that Soldier has innate health regeneration, is the only class that can get Heavy Armor, which means that with Immunity you are the best tank.

Infiltrator is a good class though, maybe one of the best. If you already started it, I would just go ahead with it.

Regarding sniper rifles, they are actually fairly useful on higher difficulties, especially on the side missions which are a bit more open. They have enough weapon force to knock down some of the lower tiered enemies, which is nice in a few instances.

Vanguard is usually played more power heavy than weapon heavy, especially since shotgun DPS isn't all that great. Barrier doesn't protect as much as Immunity.

Really all the classes are worth playing at some point, and they all can get through the game.

I felt exactly the same way when I first played the game. So naturally, soldier was the best fit for me because I didn't care to interrupt the flow of the game by selecting powers and just had my squadmates autocast them. The massive health regeneration is also a plus for reduced downtimes during combat.

I really enjoy the Infiltrator. The soldier was too boring for my likings. And the gameplay of the Vanguard felt far different than I expected.

Thanks to all of you. :)

Infiltrator + HMWSR-X +Explosive Ammo-X +2x Scram Rail-X = human Mako cannon. Quite fun to take apart Colossi with this gun.
