Great post OP.
The biggest gripe I had after first running through the original endings was that the galactic civilization I thought Shepard had been fighting to save over the course of three games, gets annihilated. A victory doesn't feel like a victory if it results in the destruction of the very thing you're trying to save.
I always felt Bioware's major blunder was not necessarily in aiming for a bittersweet tone for finale by introducing loss or sacrifice. Their blunder was in having that sense of loss or sacrifice come from the destruction of the setting the fanbase had grown attached to over the course of five years and three games. I think the endings would have been much better received if galactic civilization was saved but there were some casualties on the squad in getting there.

Yeah, I was going to say that to me Thessia is the 2nd act climax, but I see some have already mentioned this.
