If you want to record and upload videos, then you'll need a pretty decent CPU to play at the almighty 60 frames while recording, not to mention it makes rendering MUCH faster. Some recording programs run mostly off the graphics card instead of CPU and can give you higher frames for the same spec, but said programs are not "free". Either way, you'll also want storage disk write speed.

If you do go the laptop route, I highly recommend getting something like this (I use one myself).

If mobility is a necessity, a laptop with a Nvidia 780m would be ideal. That'll get you more than enough GPU power for the next 5 years.

I recommend Maingear.com (jersey) or Avadirect.com (ohio) for east coasters. Mythlogic.com for Midwestern / north (Michigan). Eurocom if you're in Canada. Sager for West coast support. Or order from any of them that you'd like. Mythlogic does free professional color calibration, which is really nice.

These can all be custom laptop kits with SSD's selectable. You will absolutely want a SSD.

I cannot recommend AMD for gaming at this time for two reasons:
1) Market demand has increased desktop card prices due to non-gaming demand, to above comparable Nvidia cards
2) Extremely Poor AMD support for mobility drivers on laptops. Nvidia's drivers have AMD beat.

Note, I have AMD desktop cards atm, but purchased before price hikes, and Nvidia GPU laptops. They run anything on high settings no problem.

The ASUS ROG G750JX is also quite nice and affordable at the 1400$ level . I prefer the JH of course, but it would cost too much comparatively, and I don't think the thermal solution Asus has is sufficient for the 780m inside. The Clevo based models from the above vendors have better cooling.

I hear that there's software to fix that issue for people that don't want to do that though, it basically overwrites the entire hard drive (bar the parts marked as "in use") with a bunch of random 0's and 1's. I've never used it though, so I can's speak for it's effectiveness.

True deletion is zero'ing the data, as all the data is stored in binary 0's and 1's. While it is true the OS only actually marks or flags files for being overwritten, it is also very easy to zero the data, and very hard to recover it when physical damage is applied, or time has passed from heavy use and the data was already overwritten.

The main reason OS's don't normally zero data immediately is because it takes time to overwrite the original files, and people don't want to wait for that to occur. Files flagged for deletion are treated as free space, and are overwritten when that space is used.

It is impossible to recover data after it is zero'ed. Intelligence and Security agencies though take a step further and incinerate the storage media. Honestly though not necessary except as a bureaucratic feature.

As to your question, laptops can give you 100+ fps (not that I would recommend such a laptop because I have yet to know about a laptop with more than 60Hz refreshrate though I admit I haven't specifically searched for such),

120hz screens are available on laptops, and cheaper now than ever if someone wants to get them. There's nothing stopping him from getting a 120 hz desktop screen though.

However, If I'm playing at 60 fps capped due to the game itself, extra GPU power from desktops, especially CF/SLI up to quad, will not matter. If the game is capped by CPU, or poor software optimizations (read write file decompressions all the time, bad memory management, bad AI threading, etc), the extra horsepower won't matter.

Laptop gaming is quite reasonable now a days at around 1500-1700 when including tax/shipping. You'll be frame rate capped at 60 @! 1920 x 1080 resolution for most games. Given that level also includes SSD's, loading, and general usage is quite snappy too.

While I have gaming desktops, I've got gaming laptops too, from 17" behemoths to 11" portable beasts, and my gaming experience has not been signifigantly improved moving from laptop to desktop because I chose and paid for laptops capable of running to my specificiations.

The main obvious advantage is that I can game while traveling, which I do frequently. If zae does not, then desktops are generally a better choice...  but there is something to be said for compactness if he desires it-- and generally a lower power bill too.

I wholly recommend against dell and alienware, and recommend other makers instead. Boutique shops like those I've listed, or Asus. These don't have an excessive premium. There is one, but not moreso than the competition.

On my thinkpad I swapped dvd drive for an extra HDD bay and put SSD inside the laptop, and HDD in the ultrabay. On my new one I did the same, but the laptop comes with 2 mSATA slots as well.

... you know, that never occurred to me to swap out the optical drive :)

wngmv wrote...
It is limited, but from what I read the number of read/write is so large that unless you don't plan on upgrading your hard drives, you don't have to worry about it breaking down.

...

Aaah - good to know :) It's not like standard HDD drives are 100% reliable anyway - I just wasn't sure how the lifespan would compare since I've never had an SSD for as long as I've had an old style HDD.

There's one other small issue with SSDs, it's virtually impossible to completely wipe data from them so if you've got your internet banking login or other senstive information stored on your PC, then when it comes to upgrading you're best off taking a hammer to the old SSD rather then selling the PC on.

Thats an issue with any data storage, not just SSD's.
...

It's more of an issue with SSDs though because of the way the data is actually stored - you can't overwrite a block a dozen times with garbage data to remove the original data (which is what you're actually doing when you do a secure delete on an HDD).

Data is always more recoverable on SSDs than HDDs.

^ All that being said though; as long as you bear in mind these tiny quirks with SSDs the boost in access speed is WAY more than worth it as everyone else has already stated ;)

That should actually work on an SSD if you did the whole drive too...

He could use his old pc to capture the footage off the new primary pc (capture card) or use RDC.  No need in going completely overboard when you already have equipment available.
