He's supposed to be some badass salarian that everyone's afraid of, taking down a small Blue Suns merc group by himself, yet the only way for him to make it into ME3 is to make him the escort of the surviving Cerberus crew.

Otherwise he always dies when holding the line against the Collectors, even when you have loyal beasts like Garrus, Zaeed & Grunt together.

Don't know what you are talking about. I have had him survive the HTL squad many times. Just did it with only Miranda, Garrus and Zaeed loyal, non-loyal Grunt, Thane, Mordin, and Tali.

Mordin is old by Salarian standards I believe, so that could explain a good deal of it.

More likely is that Salarians rely on surprise and misdirection in battle, rather than brute force. Mordin comments on how he never seems like a threat until it is too late. Salarians are not meant for a stand up fight like HTL. They are like the Asari, relying on stealth, surprise, and guerilla tactics.

Mordin can survive holding the line as well. It just depends on the loyalty status of the rest of your squad and who you assign to escort the Normandy crew and accompany Shepard. Basically you need to leave a fair amount of loyal "tank" characters holding the line.

He does seem like a bit of a **** in ME3. In part, the VA in 2 sounded more masculine.

I don't think I've ever sent him back with the survivors, and he survives the SM every time....

Mordin is recruited more for his mind than his combat ability. Guys like grunt and zaeed are there for their guns. Mordin is their for his lab work

Mordin is in the latter years of his life and salarians are not frontline fighters. The general attitude of the salarians is to win a war before the first shot is fired. So while he's capable because the Blue Suns were expecting him to just be a simple doctor, not a capable fighter, it's not something that protects him much against the Collectors, because they're throwing everything at the squad anyway. Mordin's best weapon is his brain, while his physical prowess is secondary.

This. That said, I've never had a problem with him dying in my squad. In fact, given the absurd low cooldowns on his tech powers, he is more captable as a party member than several people higher up the Suicide Mission's Hold The Line chart.

But Salarians in general don't like to fight via frontal assaults. They get their mechs or uplifted allies to do that. They strike first, strike hard, and leave the enemy broken before the other side knows the war has started.. Hence STG and their vast intelligence network.

He Survived my suicidemission just fine. I didn't loose anyone.

The only People I've lost throughout the the series are those who can't be saved by anything.
Except for the VS where one actualy have to pick one of them.

Thane was already dying when he got stabbed.

Legion did his own thing.

Dammit, Jim! He's a Doctor, not a Krogan Warlord!

Most of the time I just have him escort the crew back to the Normandy or take him to fight the reaper if he's loyal that way I know he will survive.

Salarians are a more fragile race. They are very slight compared to all others except volus and drell and hanar. They have very short lifespans. That's why they have the STG and specialize in tech and cloaking. Drell are also built more fragile.

The races are actually pretty balanced. Krogan are brute force. Yahg would be as well if they were in it more. Turian lean toward brute force but are clearly more fragile than krogan while being tougher than everyone else that's left. Asari are only powerful because of biotics and if they wear tech armor. They seem to be more between humans and salarians but closer to humans with more power because of their natural biotics. Quarians without suits would probably be in the human range, but because they need suits, they are closer to Salarians due to suit punctures. Drell, Salarians, and volus are the most fragile. Salarians know this and that is why they are masterminds at tech oriented things like cloaks, and why they seem to favor long range attacks along the lines of infiltrators or engineers with powers that don't require up close contact. Snipers with cloak, range attacks with things like energy drain and incinerate. In the MP this is very obvious and really well done.

Perhaps he has trouble holding the line because he's standing down wind.

Age? Do you think WW2 veterans could fight another war now they're aged 90+?

Just for your info: the death order for the Hold the Line team is Mordin, Tali, Kasumi, Jack, Miranda, Jacob, Garrus, Samara, Legion, Thane, Zaeed, Grunt. Non-loyal team mates die before loyal ones. So if Grunt is your only non-loyal team mate then he will die first, and may end up as your only casualty. At which point you may ask why Krogan are so squishy.

He's pretty weak, but he has great powers. I always make him Escort the Normandy Crew back.

From an RP standpoint it makes sense to have him escort the crew.

Also, Drell have been stated to have pretty dense muscle to the point that it is nearly impossible to choke them to death.

Hm, Mordin as Bones, Garrus/Thane as Spock, Shepard as Kirk. would be awesome.

Yes, one elderly doctor can easily escort dozens of wounded who may be unable to walk through enemy territory all by himself.

He's a Salarian, 'nuff said.
