Science Fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginative content such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas". Science fiction has been used by authors as a device to discuss philosophical questions of identity, desire, morality, and social structure.

Cyberpunk is a postmodern science fiction genre noted for its focus on "high tech and low life.". It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.

The Robocop (2014) is true cyberpunk science fiction at it best. Deep and philosophical story with interesting thoughts on how robotics and cybernetics can affect our lives and society, what is the difference between human and machine, and what inner conflicts merging human and machine might cause. Morality and ethics also have huge role in this amazing story.

What I really liked in the story is that it doesn't use "evil machines vs good humans" or "evil humans vs good machines" concepts. It shows advantages and disadvantages of both. Constructive real-time discussion on the matter is a part of the story. And the story doesn't insist on anything. It lets you make your own conclusions, providing with interesting ideas to think about.

I love the story and how exactly it was told. Robocop (2014) is definitely one of the best sci-fi stories of all times, and modern visually stunning blockbuster at the same time.

So. Was the movie any good, compared to the original?

Definitely. Much better.

I would say that compared to Robocop (2014) the original movie was just a so-so action.

"One of the best sci-fi films of all time" is stretching the meaning of C-rate by a whole lot, buddy. At best, it's an action flick, and at worst it was the same movie, only with dumber lines and a desire for guns that I just don't share. The only thing that even made this HD version of it worth watching was Samuel Jackson's standard character.

49% on rotten tomatoes and from the trailers it's obvious no one on set understood the subtle commentary of the original.
I'll pass thanks.
Though ED-209 still looks good. I'll say that. It looks like a modern redesign that carries over the originals awesome. Alot more than making RoboCop jet-black.

It's almost exactly the same. Litterally nothing changed except for it being made in more modern cameras.

Really? That is a bold claim, to say that a movie regarded as a masterpiece and the pinnacle of Paul Verhoeven film direction could be dwarfed by a new installment. Wouldn't have had much faith in José Padilha, considering his filmography consisting of elite squad and little else.

One of the things I loved about the original was the non-hamfisted social commentary you find throughout the film. Mostly in commercials and ambient dialogue, it helped to tell a story about how messed up human society was becoming without forcing the message down your throat. This new movie, what did it do in terms of this route?

Couldn't disagree more.

The social critique, political satire, and dark humor in the original make the remake look shallow and pathetic in comparison.

Thoughts on control and order as a contrast to the background filled with fear, corruption, and desire to feel safety, is what the story based upon. This atmosphere is shown much better in new movie.

I would say that original Robocop was... hmm... childish and naive like marvel comics, while new movie is true sci-fi drama.

See now you've crossed that line. There aren't enough Sten gifs/memes in the world for how wrong this statement is.

:)

New Robocop has "clown showman" too, but performed much better than original one. He is not just a "generator of the story's atmosphere". Some interesting thoughts were voiced through him, and voiced well.

Why is it that this new robocop still has a single human hand...and nothing else? Did they really just put a scene entirely to just say "Screw you "Lose the Arm" scene from the original"?

I will give you this though. Of the Verhoeven remakes and spinoffs, this one is probably not going to be the worst.

That honor belongs to total recall.

The new Robocop has more than just head and part of one arm left. And the scene where he... well, I don't want to post spoilers here. The movie was just released.

But yeah, Total Recall was pretty rough.  Suffered from a lot of the same sterilization that impacts Robo2014.

I still need to see it before I have an opinion, might get around to it this weekend.
I have a sneaking suspicion I won't agree with the OP's assessment though.
