They did this once, in BG2.  They won't do it again.

They meant it to be funny, but it mostly just made people angry.

Still, Mencar Pebblecrusher remains one of my favourite NPC names, and he was a really nice guy.

I think this might actually happen, even if most people are normal, some forum posters are so over the top that they are just cartoonish enough to be depicted as the source material for some crazed npc.

If they based a character off of me and my past posts, it would probably be some elitist mage who uses his power to subjugate all the non mages like some Tevinter Magus ascendant.  Would not be too far off, just embellish some of my attitudes, and viola, crazed DA:I character.

They did it HEAVILY in Throne of Bhaal (there was a LARGE amount of the characters that were directly copied from the forum's best known/recognizable members).

It didn't really work well in the end - lots of petty ego wounded -, so I doubt they would do it again.

Moreover, the people they integrated at the time were MUCH more colourful than anything you can find today, so it's not even like if they would have something actually more interesting to work with.

I support this. We should also do our own motion capture and voice acting.

And don't forget the Cullen fans.

I hear more from people bemoaning Cullen/the Cullen fans, than I do hear from Cullen fans themselves.

Exactly!

I think they will mostly stick to references to pop culture and/or Bioware employees.

http://dragonage.wik...r_eggs_(Origins)

The character "Lady Shayna" in the codex entries of the Legend of Calenhad is a reference to LdyShayna, a moderator on the Dragon Age forums.

After The Urn of Sacred Ashes, Haven has a large set of developer quotes in the form of gravestones behind the farm house:

"Jennifer Hepler: Queen of the Dwarves." Jennifer Hepler is a BioWare writer who worked on Dragon Age and wrote the Dwarf Commoner Origin as well as the quest line for the Anvil of the Void.

And this seems to be a fan favorite:

A random encounter in the Denerim Market District has nine cats standing in a row. This is the infamous "Zombie Kitten Army" made famous by developers and regulars on the original BioWare forums. For those who purchased the Feastday Pranks, the Cat Lady's Hobble-Stick seems to make the cats come out a bit more often and also move about a bit more. Players may need to enter the Market at least 42 times for this to trigger.

I can't see them basing characters on specific posters, but I can TOTALLY see them poking fun at the fandom itself.

Have a group of NPCs who fawn all over Cullen every time he enters the room (to his own discomfort).

A Finn-like bookworm who insists on referring to Iron Bull as a "kossith", despite the fact that he himself doesn't even know the word.

Etc.

And a lot more fenris' running around.

Really??? That is so cool! Bioware, feel free to use me, as a character. :D

Only problem, I am not one of the best known though *sight*.

(How can you get butthurt over being immortalized into a legendary game? )

Neither, we would have a lot more of Lloyd the Redcliffe tavern owner running around.

I'd imagine it was more complaints that certain people didn't make the cut?

David has strongly suggested that's not something they do anymore because of the way the community reacts.

How does the community react?

People got angry, complained, and I believe the chosen posters were harassed.

This is what happens.

*Assume Bioware includes characters based on the perception of certain forum posters*

Now, while some of the included posters would think it pretty swell that they were referenced, others would either be offended by how they were portrayed/referenced, or simply find it weird.

Other folks? Some will be fine with it, others will wonder what makes the chosen posters so special. Then the devs get pestered by it, the chosen forumites get pestered or teased by it, etc etc and it ends up being more of a problem than what it was worth as an easter egg.

Last time I remember a forum member being referenced in a game it was in Mass Effect 2. Good ol Jeirt.

Jeirt was a wonderful girl round the BSN who was without a doubt Thane's biggest fangirl, even before ME2 came out. She was fantastic, everyone loved her, and the devs decided to have her referenced in the game. During Thane's recruitment mission, you can save these salarians and afterward, you'll get this email-

From: Jeirt

Greetings, Commander Shepard

Liara T'Soni gave me your contact information. I was one of the cleaning crew in the Dantius Towers. You helped me get out of there. According to T'Soni, you also found Thane. He took down some of the Eclipse mercs trying to gun us down, and I wondered if you could pass along my thanks.

The way he moved... one was dead before they even knew he was there. He snapped another's neck, then shot a third, all in the space of a few heartbeats. It was incredible. He moved like a dancer, grace and power in constant motion.

Seeing him changed my life, woke up something in me I don't fully understand yet. I don't know what I'm going to do, but salarian lives are too short to waste as custodians, especially when there's so much else out there. I'm going to find something that lets me capture what I saw in him, that beauty, that aesthetic perfection.

I'm also going to buy some nice clothes.

So if you could tell him that... or just whatever parts of that you think appropriate... I'd appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Jeirt

I'm sure she would've loved that, but I wouldn't know because by a certain point, she just disappeared from the forums. No clue where she went, but we missed her. Hell I still do.

Ask yourself- if that was you, how would you have felt about it? If you'd of loved it, cool. Perhaps if someone else was in that position, they might not. Depends.

I knew many of the posters who were included in BG2, but I was not one of them.

It didn't bother me at all, but many others were annoyed.

A bit odd, the feeling that "it should've been me", "why not me", "why them", that some people get.

If they just used one of my jokes - the Shield of the Maruader - I'd be more than happy.

I'd also die laughing if they did something making fun of my ardent opposition to Save Imports, my now-infamous "Bioware, Let's Talk About" threads or my bad song parody attempts in the Off Topic section. But I'd consider all of the above to not only be unlikely, but also bad ideas, for the reasons people have listed about it dividing the fanbase and such.

I imagine the devs still include little tidbits as a nod to certain favorite forumites, they're just a lot more subtle about it.

I don't know if it was due to my suggestion or not, but I like how when they were asking what fans wanted in the EC I said I wanted a Reaper crushing a ship with its tentacles and lo and behold it was in the EC.

I want to see that in too, Jim. hahaha

Closest I'll ever get-

During ME3's dev time, while Christina Norman was still Lead Gameplay Designer on Mass 3, she put out the call for fans to give her ideas, descriptions, etc etc for biotic powers a Vanguard would use. I gave her a few, but there was one description and idea she personally really liked and told me she could run with. I called it Biotic Sacrifice when I suggested it-

It ended up becoming Nova.

And like a ****** I barely used it outside of MP. *beats head with palm*

How exciting. #sarcasm
