They did it in ME2, although that was back in the Bioboards days. One of the emails post Thane recruitment was from "Jeirt", who was well known for being a massive Thane fangirl even before the game came out, based solely on preview videos. Thane dropping out of vents became a meme for a while.

It's a fun little nod. The people who get upset over something like that really need to step back and reevaluate their life.

Imagine using Sylvius, or even Seival as NPCs. Perhaps banter between two BSN rivals? Jesus it would be hilarious, anyone to complain would seriously need to get a reality check and see that it's all in good spirit of the community.

Hilarious to you perhaps, but annoying to others. Seen as a waste of time and resources by some, pandering by a different group, and anyone outside of the BSN would not understand it at all.

So yeah, not the best course of action.

Actually, it could be done in such a way as to answer everyone's concerns. Allow the forumites to sign up as volunteers for this.

In game, what would happen is the Inquisitor (PC) goes down many flights of stairs into a vast and dark cavern filled with pasty people ignoring each other completely. Each person is gazing raptly into a glowing mirror that seems to show him things. From time to time the viewers break off from their watching and tap their fingers against boards covered in letters and symbols all the while cursing furiously. They refuse to interact with the PC and with each other.

The PC leaves and they remain, all but forgotten within the context of Thedas.

Easy peasy.
