When the senses are shaken, and the soul is driven to madness, Who can stand?

Darkest Dungeon Kickstarter is LIVE! Base goal of $75,000 has been met in less than 24h, now for the stretch goals.
Darkest Dungeon is a hard-core RPG about the stresses of dungeon crawling. You will lead a band of four heroes on a perilous side-scrolling descent,  dealing with a prodigious number of threats to their bodily health, and worse, a relentless assault on their mental fortitude!
Platforms: PC/Windows and Mac (distributed on Steam)Developer: gaffer Popstar with the rest of Red Hook Studios

You will recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes through twisted forests, forgotten warrens, ruined crypts and beyond.
You'll battle not only unimaginable foes, but stress, famine, disease, and the ever-encroaching dark. Uncover strange mysteries,
and pit the heroes against an array of fearsome monsters with an innovative strategic turn-based combat system.

You will have to tend to characters’ spirits as much as you do to their Hit Points. But in these grim situations, you'll find opportunities for true heroism!

Darkest Dungeon is not a game where every hero wins the day with shiny armor and a smile. It is a game about hard trade-offs,
nearly certain demise, and heroic reversals.

Do you have what it takes to survive in the forgotten corners of the Darkest Dungeon?

FEATURES:
  • The Affliction System – heroes' personalities are paramount! Contend with paranoia, abusiveness, fear, irrationality, and a host of gameplay-meaningful quirks
  • Striking hand-drawn gothic crowquill art style
  • Innovative turn-based combat pits you against a host of diabolical monsters
  • Classic CRPG and roguelike features, including meaningful permadeath, procedural dungeons, and incredible replay
  • A distinctive game world featuring over a dozen unique playable character classes such as the Plague Doctor, the Highwayman, and even the Leper!
  • Town meta-game – tend to your heroes wounds, both corporeal and cerebral
  • Loot! Gold, jewels, heirlooms, and mystical trinkets. Not to mention upgradable armor, weapons, and consumable supplies.
  • Things That Once Seen Can Never Be Unseen...

I'd need to see actual gameplay to know if it would be half as much as it aspires to be... but this has certainly piqued my interest.

Meaningful Permadeath... no, this is only legend! Lol

This looks pretty awesome. Love the artstyle and one of the devs worked on Homeworld. I'm very interested but I'll wait just like ol' Jimmy.

I realize this will be a necro, but with the backer early access happening tomorrow ~10am PST, I was wondering who else will be playing Darkest Dungeon at this time tomorrow besides me? :D

I thought the dungeon was darkest right before everything goes pitch black?

As long as I don't have to sign some NDA to play it, absolutely. :)

Alright, so after getting a few hours under my belt I think I'm starting to get an idea of just what I've gotten myself into.

Darkest Dungeon is a brutal, stressful, terrifying, wonderful game.

Every single action you take, every choice of what to do with your limited resources has serious ramifications. There are never enough resources available to you to make sure you're party is prepared for anything, or even half the things they may encounter. There is never enough time to get your entire party fit and sane before you have to crawl back into the dungeons. There are times when  you lose an entire party to the blight because you didn't prepare enough anti-venoms and there are times when a single adventurer manages to hang on to life, 3-4-5 times avoiding death to deliver the final blow against the enemy.

I can only say that if you enjoy gothic horror, roguelikes and/or strategy RPGs with a seriously sadistic twist, then I would highly recommend grabbing this game and seeing how far you're willing to push for the chance to clear that next room, to finish that quest...

The only advice I can give you is that when you decide to enter the Weald, be prepared to fend of the Blight status with abilities and anti-venoms...you're going to need it.

*Anzers Resolve is Tested...*
*Masochistic*

I give this game a delightfully painful 11 / 10

Oh, I may have forgotten to mention that every single action auto-saves and there is no manual save option, so scumming is out of the question. Your Graverobber is already Depressed and your Vestal is on Deaths Door, do you really want to keep pushing for that next room? Should you cut your losses and hope that the stress of not completing the quest doesn't cause even worse psychological issues in your adventurers? You're already going to have to commit your Crusader to the Sanitarium to rid him of his Necrophilia...Decisions, decisions.

Game looks very promising. I got a bit of XCOM vibe when I watched some raw gameplay footage.

Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Very much so. Managing your base in XCOM is similar to managing your town in Darkest Dungeon, deciding where to allocate your time and money to best benefit yourself and your adventurers. The battles are much more strategic than you might think from looking at them; placement, timing and buffs/debuffs usually have huge effects on how combat plays out, as well as a healthy dose of luck.

The only think I'm not very keen on right now and is something that Red Hook said they're planning to implement, is a turn order indicator. I will very much look forward to that feature. :)

Week 13:

I sent a group consisting of a Hellion, Leper, Vestal and Plague Doctor into the Warrens to try and scout the area.

The team started out well, keeping their torch brightly lit and destroying a number of horrific spiders and grotesque pig-man creatures. They managed to make their way through the first 4 rooms, the horrors they witnessed and dangers they encountered steadily wearing away at their stamina and sanity...

Halfway in, Lucy (the Plague Doctor) had a bad run of luck and contracted the Blight while Bleeding all over the place, she was on Deaths Door. Addinell (the Vestal) was under severe stress and became Paranoid, refusing to minister healing to Lucy. I made the call to pull back and cut their losses...Unfortunately the stress from retreating caused Alevi (the Leper) and Margas (the Hellion) to take to the Tavern immediately upon reaching town, drowning their sorrows in drink. I had Addinell go to the Abbey to pray so she could regain her senses. I allowed Lucy her vice as she "recuperated" in the brothel.

I can only hope my next team is able to make it further in next week...

Early Access for the Darkest Dungeon will be available on Steam in less than 8 hours, for anyone still interested!

I just had some seriously bad luck, lost my Vestal and Plague Doctor in the first battle of a dungeon thanks to being surprised, then stunlocked by a group of 4 Maggots. Poor Lucy and Addinell didn't even get a chance to fight back or run, they just died rather ignobly. To maggots. In the first battle. After I had just upgraded their weapons and armor. Sorry, I-I think I got something in my eye, I'll be right back.  :crying:

So has anyone else decided to pick up Darkest Dungeon from Steam? Any harrowing or horrific stories to share?

Just picked this game up last night and I'm thoroughly enjoying it! It's very XCOM meets Dark Souls with a really cool art style!

I wish it had a little more customization to the characters and male/female version of each adventurer but that's really my only complaint thus far.

Excited to jump in again once I make it back home!

I Kickstart what I must, pay full retail (as it were) for indie games that are already funded and wait for AAA games to hit the bargain bin.

I'm the type of consumer I'm sure businesses hate.
