...Can they cast spells with a stump?
*Honestly asking here*
Why not? Eye beams are possible, so probably.
Not like it would be a problem for a demon anyway, what with all the horrific appendage growing.

I think a battle mage that trained for a long time to cast specific spells could cast them with a flick of a wrist, but not circle scrubs of course.
You don't want no scrubs?

True enough.
I think that the magic that mages perform in DA, was a result of their will with mana as 'fuel'. So cutting of a limb or limbs shouldn't affect their ability to use magic.

So those stupid dance moves they do in DAO and the twirling in DA2 was done for what?
Keep in shape?

Nope, I don't want no scrubs, a scrub is a mage that can't get no love from me, hanging on the passengers side of a revolution ride, trying to survive, but won't.

Is there ANYTHING in the lore even vaguely backing that up?

Also don't you need Hands to direct, directional spells?
I mean you're funneling the fire, blood, lightning and etc down you're hands to the target.
Probably any sort of chanting or motions are to help focus the mind and channel the magic. So, well trained mages may not need it.
However, rituals are still needed to do some magic, like closing the veil or summoning demons. So, it is not just straight willpower, there are still things needed to be done on a more physical level.
Not sure how the litany of Andrala (or w/e) stops blood magic from working....

It stops blood magic domination in the mind...so maybe it acts almost like a Fade Shield spell on the brain?

What's stopping one from doing that with a little nub or a stump? And I don't think rending the veil or summoning are directional.

Wynne set a boy's hair on fire when she was a child. I don't imagine she was waving her hands about trying to do it when she had no idea she could.

The fact their being drug through the street with stumps?
Bah!
just from simplicities sake, i'd just transfer them in a cage with anti magic runes, they can be drawn and quartered through it, it can be washed out afterwards.
Sheesh.

Adralla of Vyrantium dedicated her life to the study of blood magic—the academic study, rather than the practice. A deeply pious mage, she was renowned in her day for having found a counter to every form of mind control, a defense against dream walkers, and even counter-spells to demonic summons.
Her efforts went unappreciated in her native Tevinter, however. After three different magisters attempted to have her killed, she fled the country, choosing to take refuge in the land of Blessed Andraste's birth. She spent the remainder of her days with the Circle in Ferelden.
The Litany of Adralla disrupts the casting of mind control spells. Use the Litany whenever a creature tries to dominate another with magic, and it will interrupt the casting. Once the spell is in effect and a character is under a blood mage's power, it is too late.
—From Codex entry: The Litany of Adralla
Also, it says Lambert used it to dispel Cole's invisibility... didn't read Asunder so I'll just guess that is true.
However, a mage or a templar doesn't need to use this, someone with no formal ties to magic can use it. And a litany is spoken/chanted, so just words can stop blood magic from ensnaring someone's mind? Or is the Litany enchanted with the enchantment unlocked by the chant? So, are words/motions/actions necessary for magic? It seems they have an impact on magic itself, from a mage or mundane.

It's true that Lambert uses the litany and can see Cole afterwards. It may be the lyrium in his veins as a Seeker that powered it as Wynne calls it in origins 'just a spell,' although she also calls Adralla a bard, or it may be that there is some inherent weakness in blood magic that Adralla discovered that the rest of Thedas doesn't know because they refuse to study it.
Huh? Antimagic runes?
Mage origin. Wards carved into the stone that negated all spells and magical artifacts to keep apprentices from getting into the phylactery chamber. The Rod of Fire wouldn't work on it, but worked perfectly well on another door, Jowan and the Warden couldn't even cast spells in proximity of those wards

Sheesh.
Not that I'm for public executions... or in favor of a new world order under Z.... but you don't need magic runes, just some templars nearby and someone doing the Litany while the mage prisoner is being transfered. No need to needlessly use up lyrium, be more efficient.

Do those work on blood magic as well?
Do those work on blood magic as well?
No idea. Jowan didn't even try to use blood magic until Lily was threatened with Aeonar, but those wards completely and utterly negated a mage being able to cast spells normally, and even prevented the magical fire rod from working.

I want more research on that. Are those mentioned anywhere else?
