Huh? Antimagic runes?

The kind that prevent the casting of magic and the drawing of Mana near them.

Templars can create them.

There were first mentioned in DAO's Magi Origin were you first attempt to use the rod of fire to burn through the lock on the phylactery chamber door. They were installed into the stonework.

So... why don't templars have these runes tattooed with lyrium? May not need to consume the stuff then... side effect being loss of memory, but hey, duty, right?

With Fenris being known, wonder how many others are going to attempt that experiment now, especially with this crisis.

I want more research on that. Are those mentioned anywhere else?

Nope. The closest thing to these wards is what the Tranquil at Ostagar describes as enchanting. A time consuming process that can take any known spell and give it permanency if given enough knowledge of runes and enough lyrium to make the rune.

Time to make.... Captain Anderfel....

Technically, they already will suffer memory loss when the affects of lyrium kick in and they become lyrium addled.

I'm just trying to understand how those runes work. Because if they block passage to the fade in close proximity then it would only block regular magic off, but blood magic could still be used, as it doesn't require the fade component.

Another thought, what about a mage who gets lyrium markings like Fenris? Possible super mage?

Eh... never mind, probably causes insanity unless you practice brooding to keep the insanity at bay.

Edit: Yes, I quoted myself, because my opinions are so good I can't help pointing them out even to myself.

I like to think of it as "silence" given permanency personally.

If that was the case then blood magic as well wouldn't be an effective measure given it negates all magic, blood magic or no.

Whatever lyrium can do a mage can do with their mana. A mage just has to train for specific things to achieve whatever you with to achieve with lyrium.

There just has to be some logic behind it, something an author thought about.

For example In D&D there are spells that require verbal and somatic components and being bound or gagged will disrupt those, but there are also spells that don't require those and they can't be stopped. Then there are dead magic zone that have no wieve to draw spells from, but then again there are for example psionics that are their own wieve and their spells work inside dead magic zones. So when you get to the bottom of how things work you understand what works where and why.

There has to be a specific way about how these runes work in DA, what exactly they do to a mage.

Like for example - what the hell is silence?

A curse on the vocal chords? A magical block to stop the brain from acting on known abilities?

DA magic doesn't have verbal components ( at least most that I know of. )

Templars have mind controlling abilities? Silence in DA2 works on everybody - stops rogues and warriors from using their abilities as well.

The fact their being drug through the street with stumps?

Bah!

-_- just from simplicities sake, i'd just transfer them in a cage with anti magic runes, they can be drawn and quartered through it, it can be washed out afterwards.

Sheesh.

So you're going to pick them up, wherever they are, and cart them back all the way to Val Royeaux in an expensive prison-wagon? Like that Nic Cage movie?

Because each procedure would be very expensive, and it wouldn't have the side-bonus of instilling obedience and loyalty.

@MWZ

Regardless, I don't think that'll be an option for you. If they aren't doing torture, I'm sure they aren't doing dismemberment.

This is one of my problems with DA's expanded universe, where the lore contradicts itself. in origins Alistair says that templars train in talents that disrupt mana. So if a mage doesn't use mana to power their spells but blood templar talents shouldn't affect them right. That plus mind control is the reason why the chantry ban it. I thought,

(Could be wrong though  )

Alistair was wrong about a lot.

He's probably the most retconned "source" in Origins.

And while she sits in a cage, mages will try to rescue her, and if all enemies of mages in close proximity of the cage are defeated a flag changes on the cage and it is rolled back to the mage camp, and while they do that the other group will try to attack them and take control of the cage again.

She just gets a beheading, far quicker and cleaner death then she deserves but ultimately who is she?

Some Random senior orlaisian enchanter.

No one of any renown or note.

I had thought the Tranquil had inscribed such runes. Considering Pharamond was able to create one to hold back a freaking Pride demon and all.
