What exactly makes you think that the Eluvians are even worth keeping?

The first time I played the game, I thought Merrill was being an fool while Merethari was just trying to knock some sense into her. But after some time, and analizing it further, it seems it was the other way around. Merrill aways took precautions for her actions, such as learning blood magic without allowing an demon to be bound to her, or asking Hawke and Co to come in order to slay her in case she gets possessed. If she is really that reckless, how come she never became an abomination in these 7 years, or got tainted by the mirror? While Merethari allows an demon inside her. What stops that demon from possessing her and destroying the entire clan? Now that was reckless. Not to mention she was an ass spreading to the clan how Merrill was an dangerous blood mage or whatever else she said, while she was just as bad all along.

I'll give a short answer since I really have to get to work.

I see the potential benefits outweighing the risks, especially the long-range communication that the Tevinters had unlocked when they took the eluvians.

We already got scrying stones for long range communications. So basically the Eluvians are just less practical, less portable and more dangerous scrying stones. The Eluvians are obviously much more than simple communication devices, and they are obviously very dangerous. I see nothing of worth in the Eluvians that cannot be achieved by other means, or should not be achieved at all.

But that's NOT the reason Marethari gave to the clan. The reason Marethari gave to the clan were "She'll bring back the Taint and kill us all!!!!"

Interaction with Demons would've been a more understandable thing to distrust her of as opposed to baseless lies that have no foundation in truth. Understandable, but still erroneous considering WHICH denizen of the Fade Merrill interacted with -- one that was trapped, sundered from the Fade, and severely weakened.

She did not interact with just one. When she first reveals her blood magic, Hawke can accuse her of summoning a demon and Merril does not deny this: her defense is that she knows what she is doing because the demon helped them.

The Eluvian in the Brecilian Forest ruins was dengerous because it linked to a darkspawn infected thaig (Cadash?) and was tainted. Presumably, the eluvian in that thaig is equally tainted.

There was no indication that Morrigan's mirror was particularly dangerous, or that the Eluvians generally were a threat to the Elvhen who created them or the Tevinters that stole them afterwards. At this point, we don't know everything they can do or everywhere they can connect to, so the fact that you see nothing of worth is pretty meaningless. They could cure cancer, for all you know.

Why would a communication device be able to cure cancer? Its basically a teleportation device or stargate like thing, common for science fiction and always dangerous because you don't know whats on the other side. We have one successful use of an eluvian, which we hwve no evidence wasn't in itself special from the others or was heavily modified by morrigan from its original construction,  out of two eluvians which were traps. I say a 2/3 failure rate is enough ti label these dangerous tools that shouldn't be used, at least by rogues without proper backing of society as in a stupid little girl who thinks she can deal with demons and gst off scot free. Shes lucky methrani was there to take the bullet for her or she'd be walking around with a new audacity in control.

Mh I never knew that actually, but I just believe the part about the Brecillian Forest.
Just one thing.. I always thought the mirror Merrill had IS the one from the forest?
So.. wouldn't it be tainted again the moment it starts working again?
Or would it suddenly change target place?

Thatis just the problem.
Lets assume Merril gets it working and it re-connects with it's tainted pair.

Congratulations - you just unleashed the Blight in the middle of a city.

A pretty hefty risk.
But hey, it's a shelmen city, right?

I think it's on the DA2 forums, I remember TEWR and I discussing it...

Well, in Merril's defense, she at least never attempted to sell a slave to a Magister. I'm looking at you, Anders.

Considering that Marethari ended up letting Audacity loose and becoming possessed because of her refusal to accept Merrill's decision to restore the Eluvian, and the Sabrae clan can get killed if they attempt to murder Merrill and Hawke in cold blood, I'm not surprised it's seen as a "bad call".

It's not just a communication device.

In Witch Hunt Morrigan found one completely intact, activated it, and went through it as a portal, possibly with a romanced Warden.

But the lore also says that when Tevinter destroyed Arlathan, they took the eluvians but despite all their power, all they could get out of the eluvians were long range communication devices, and couldn't figure out their full functionality.

I say a 2/3 failure rate is enough ti label these dangerous tools that shouldn't be used, at least by rogues without proper backing of society as in a stupid little girl who thinks she can deal with demons and gst off scot free.

Ummm, there isn't a 2/3 failure rate at all. I have no idea where you're getting this figure. Morrigan had an eluvian and it worked. The fact that she's coming back in Inquisition, obviously untainted despite going through the portal, is proof that it isn't connected to the darkspawn. Merrill extrapolated information from the shard and researched elven lore and built hers from scratch, she simply couldn't figure out how to activate it.

That's not a failure, and can't be labeled as such because the eluvian didn't actually blow up in her face or summon a demon.

We only have one example of an eluvian causing harm, and it wasn't even the eluvian that did it but the darkspawn taint since it had been corrupted by the darkspawn.

So the actual number is one tainted mirror, one fully functinal mirror, and one inactive mirror.

Shes lucky methrani was there to take the bullet for her or she'd be walking around with a new audacity in control.

This claim cannot be called factual in any way as there is no evidence to support it. The fact that Merethari changed her reason to fear the eluvian in Act 2 and Act 3, and her reason in Act 3 is only given after she became an abomination herself makes her a very unreliable source of information.

Had Merrill activated it and Audacity had been summoned, then it would be true. But if Merrill activated the eluvian and it connected to the other eluvians, and maybe even Morrigan's eluvian, then the project would've been a resounding success and Merrill would be a hero of the Dalish.

Without actually activating the eluvian, however, any thing for or against it is merely suppostion without evidence.

So let's use the scientific method. You make a claim then do everything you can to disprove your claim. If it cannot be disproven then your claim is proven. The fact that Merrill never activated her eluvian means that nothing is proven or disproven.

Definition of opinion: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

And yet, absolutely no character in the storyline even makes the slightest implication that this could be the case, so it's difficult for me to take your condemnation of Merrill seriously.

Master Warder Z wrote...

And Merril delt with a demon this confirmed, She recieved something from said demon.

Audacity is sundered from the Fade and trapped in a totem in the real world. The rules of the Fade don't apply here because Audacity isn't in the Fade - it is in the real world, and quite literally trapped for a millennia. Audacity isn't even in a position to enforce anything - it has been trapped for since the war between the ancient kingdom of Arlathan and the Tevinter Imperium.

Master Warder Z wrote...

It is a tiny leap from there to assume a deal was made and considering this is how 99% of interactions with demons go when it reaches that stage, its hardly anything but a safe assumption, unsupported certainly.

Those 99% of interactions don't include demons that are trapped by ancient magic in the real world.

Master Warder Z wrote...

But not as you keep whining it to be, Your acting as if the situation is the most implausible outcome when in truth its about the only outcome in DA besides the demon seeking to posses right away.

Audacity is impotent to do anything but speak telepathically and send images; it's inability to do nothing more is central to Merrill's short story, as the Keeper noted it was bound to the statute.

Master Warder Z wrote...

The Demon wasn't defeated by Merril therefore she didn't best it, She gleaned something from it therefore a deal is likely the outcome, Unless if you think Merril magically just stumbled upon blood magic and and the tomes of knowledge she needed in discourse from the demon. Which to me is more of a leap of faith then assuming what happens in reality, more oft then not.

I think Audacity did precisely what it wanted to do: give Merrill the knowledge necessary for her to continue her efforts to restore the Eluvian, so that it could spend years manipulating Marethari, and then eventually getting the Keeper to release it from it's prison.

Considering that Marethari only argues that Audacity would have tried to escape from the restored Eluvian (and even her different reasons for opposing Merrill's efforts in Act II concerned her allegation that Merrill would bring back the taint), it's not a leap of faith on my part.

Ok, let's assume that what the demon wanted all along was to possess Marethari.
What that means is that, in order for that theory to be true, he had to have also manipulated Merril into restoring the Eluvian thus leaving the clan thus leading to Marethari being possessed.
Which means, even if the Merril fans are right, she was still manipulated by a demon with whom she decided to have a conversation.

And let's not forget that Merril had contact with demons beyond the one in the statue like the one she summons to break the barrier keeping the group from Flemeth's altar.

Tragic, Merrill's mistakes cost her clan so much. She should have know fixing the mirror was a bad call.

Merrill isn't responsible for the actions of other people. And Merrill's research into the Eluvian doesn't condemn her for Marethari freeing Audacity, or the Sabrae Clan attempting to murder Merrill and Hawke.

This isn't like Hawke asking people to endanger their lives on a venture into the Deep Roads for potential riches, it's Merrill choosing her own path to reconstruct ancient, elven technology that could potentially benefit the People. I don't see how that endangered Marethari, the Sabrae Clan, or the People in general. Whether or not it would have worked is certainly up for debate (and I doubt we'll ever know for certain), but I respect her efforts to improve the lives of the Elvhen, and her attempts to end the plight of the Elvhen.

Why people have no problem with Hawke risking other people's lives in the Deep Roads so he could attain wealth, but vilify Merrill because she was building a mirror (based on her own research into the Eluvians), is something I'll never understand.

Agreed. A lot has been said about the "portal" thing as a positive said of the Eluvians, but nobody (except Morrigan perhaps) has proved to know how they work. What if it brings you to the darkspawn again? Since my main Warden was Dalish, I remember it pretty well: the mirror not only had the taint, but after Tamlen activated it darkspawn started appearing in the forest.

Despite the gameplay and story segregation, it's pretty clear that those who went with Hawke into the Deep Roads volunteered, be it by conviction (family), money, or because they owed Hawke a favour. The mirror could endanger not only Merrill and friends, but the entire clan or the neighbourhood.

Sell herself out? No way. But i can't say the same for the people around her, like in the case of Hawke and Feynriel?

I'm fairly sure the thing with Feynriel is at least as broken as Wynne approving of you sleeping with Gheyna, as I'm almost certain it's triggered by the wrong action, taking into account the precedent of her character elsewhere (for example, while she wants you to talk to the hunger demon in the Deep Roads, there's no approval penalty at all for killing it later).

That's correct, Xil. As we know from Merrill's dialogue, she approves of you getting information from Torpor, not for making a deal to sell out Feynriel (which is similar to the scene with the Profane Abomination).

This line of thinking usually comes from people who think Merrill dislikes Feynriel, but I've never understood why some people think Merrill dislikes Feynriel. Merrill approves if Hawke encourages Feynriel to find a place among the Dalish in Act I, and if you refuse to make Feynriel tranquil when the Keeper suggests it in Act II.

As for Hawke... no, never. Not without blatant mind control.

Or an asinine plot that has every companion who can enter the Fade make an attempt to murder Hawke in a few seconds of being made an offer by a demon - everyone except for Anders, that is. Which I find odd, since this was never the case in Origins or Awakening. It reminds me of the same mindset that gave us a plethora of insane and stupid mages throughout the entire storyline.

Mkay. Just as soon as everyone else stops saying things like "Merrill is an idiot" and "mages are irresponsible."

Merrill is an idiot and Mages are irresponsible.

Which is disproven time and time again in the storyline when Merrill demonstrates her intelligence and her mastery of magic, from her constructing an ancient elven artifact through information she obtained through the shard and the lore that she collected to her ability to identify that Kerran wasn't possessed. An idiot isn't an astute student of the arcane arts, and I doubt an idiot would be able to master blood magic for several years without falling to temptation to abuse it.

An irresponsible mage would have misused blood magic, and Merrill doesn't.

You should read some of the stuff we found on xil.

I don't think Xil's support of the mages is sufficient enough reason for your vilification of her. I happen to think Xil is a good person, too.

What exactly makes you think that the Eluvians are even worth keeping?

If its just a communication device it would be a potent device. but we already have seen its also capable of teleporting people. even its only a few its an extremely powerful device but if its capable of transporting army's then this could create an empire. And we are not  sure what it does now do we? Its worth keeping because you dont wish to remain ignorant of such power and neither do you want just laying around and wait for the wrong people to take it.

"At this point, the Chantry called for a holy war against the elves that became known as the Exalted March of the Dales. While the elves eventually sacked Val Royeaux and pushed well into human lands, Halamshiral was conquered and the elves were completely crushed by 2:20 Glory."

So the elves managed to wreak havok even after the Exalted March, making gains for a time against the combined might of the Chantry and Orlais. Impressive. It reminds me of the slave rebellion in Rome about 70 years BC, the one led by Spartacus. Although apparently doomed to inevitable failure almost from the start, they certainly did make a huge mess before the end.

Ariane also infers the involvement of the Circle of Magi in the fall of the Dales, so you have trained Circle mages playing a role against the elves as well.

Don't recall that off topic comment.

It's not off topic, since there are mages among the Dalish, and it's possible some elven mages may try to find sanctuary among the Elvhen, since Ariane's clan and Zathrian's clan accepted elven mages who escaped from the Circle. Given the Mage-Templar War, and the viewpoints on the conflict from different sides, it's possible some elven mages might seek sanctuary with the People.

As for when Ariane said it: she mentions it when the Warden-Commander takes her to the Circle Tower.

That still Marethari's fault not Merril's. When Merril dicided to pushed the limits with the demon she at least considered the worse senario and made a contendency, she brought Hawk and company with her to slay her if she did becomes possed.(Which I would never wanted to do  but help because I know she would of done it behind my back.) Marethari did not place that prevention.

When we get back to camp, Merethari admits she told the clan that Merrill could bring back the taint and that she was a blood mage...

But the very moment he ran to his death rather than be rescued by Merrill, I felt it was too late for Merrill to return to the clan, as they all now hated her guts and distrusted her, based entirely on Merethari's opinion, which has no evidence supporting it.

Merril DID willingly deal with a demon.
There are no if's and but's here.

There is every reason to distrust her

The Dalish see all spirits as dangerous, but Marethari also poisoned the clan against her, in an attempt to coerce Merrill to return to the clan and abandon her efforts to build an Eluvian. Marethari admits that she said that Merrill would bring back the taint, and then tries to manipulate Merrill into abandoning her efforts to return to the Sabrae clan. It's also the reason Marethari refused to leave Sundermount with the Sabrae clan years later, even though Merrill admits the clan should have already left by that time.

Furthermore, Merrill learned blood magic from Audacity, who was trapped in a totem and cut off from the Fade. It's not exactly a typical situation.

What it came down to for me was simple. Merrill is a world authority of Eluvians, possibly only Morrigan surpassing her in knowledge for getting one started. She is working at a goal to benefit her people worldwide, she is restoring a part of their heritage. Merrill was following the mission of the Dalish.

Sez who?
She never got it working and was d****** around with it for years.

Merrill's Eluvian remained inert, but the power could be felt. Given the knowledge Merrill extrapolated from the shard and the lore she gathered on them, she was certainly more informed about them than anyone else in the storyline.

Lotion Soronnar wrote...

And since I didn't warn Merethari that Merrill was planning on dealing with the demon, that means that Merethari had become an abomination BEFORE we showed up at the camp. Which means that she believed so much that her way was the right way that she put her entire clan at risk because she couldn't even consider she was wrong about the eluvian.

Actually, we don't know exactly how Metharari got possesed. By the time we're speakign with her, she is already possesed, and thus, the demon could be lying to get to Merril.
It very well could be that the demon overpwoered her.
all we know for sure is that Metharari got possesed.

Given how the abomination tries to deceive Merrill about being possessed when it's weakened, I'm not inclined to agree. Marethari admits to setting Audacity loose, and admitting that she needs to be killed outright in order to stop her; the abomination later tries to deceive Merrill, which is when Hawke can point out that Marethari said that she needed to be killed in order for Audacity to be stopped.

Audacity was trapped, and needed to be intentionally released in order to get outside the totem, as Merrill notes when she discovers that Audacity is no longer trapped (which is something she suspected early in Act III). Given how Audacity was trapped for a millennia, I'm not inclined to think it somehow escaped when it wasn't able to since the fall of Arlathan.

If they can....

Merrill never gives any impression that it's impossible, or unlikely, for the clan to kill a possessed mage.

And yet, absolutely no character in the storyline even makes the slightest implication that this could be the case, so it's difficult for me to take your condemnation of Merrill seriously.

Mmm this subject has grown increasingly tiresome be not surprised that even if you do end up replying to this i may not. As much joy as i find as it is disputing conflicting views and conjecture from my own it does upon occasion grow old.

So your proposition here is despite contracts, deals and etc the very bread and butter of these entities of the Fade it likely didn't strike a bargain with Merril despite the fact she was seeking something from it?  Your entire proposition is based around the assumption it sought not only its freedom but also the Keeper despite there being no prior interaction between the two as far as the in game events and lore around the game goes.

In fact if we went by these events, Merril being plagued by the demon later in her years within kirkwall would indicate if any one had a connection to said entity it would be her.

Ultimately i don't care enough to continue to debate this when in truth neither of our positions have any shred of lore or in game basis to them, You can maintain your position and i will do the same.
