And Audacity was trapped. What was it going to do, exactly?

Nothing unless some stupid and naive blood mage will be around to deal with it then he can possess that mage and be free having fun with burning thedas thanks merrill and that would be in case if not hawke and keeper...

It is a bit of a Batman Gambit, yes. How does Audacity know Marethari so well to begin with?

Because he is demon and demon proven that they can read person like book thats why in the end demon almost always win as far only the warden screwd demon and we don't know if he rly did it or demon screwd the warden...

If you buy into the Demon as Merril did it was supposedly around during its construction.

It likely could offer a few tips :P

Indeed they do. So? Merrill was cast out, she did not have access to these tomes. So that is a no go. The ONLY source of knowledge that Merrill had access to, regarding the Eluvians, was Audacity. That is the long and short of it.

At the time she spoke with Audacity, Merrill was still a member of the clan. Whatever material the clan had, I'm sure she researched it thoroughly as the Keeper's First. By the time she might have lost access to that material, she had also finished with Audacity.

You don't know what her sources might have been, what she might have gotten from the black market in Kirkwall, etc. You're making baseless assumptions.

some Demons possess telepathy. If I recall, Marethari and Merrill went close to Audacity in the short story. It could've read their mind.

When Tevinter destroyed Arlathan and they took the Eluvians, there aparently wasn't any lore left to tell them how to use them for any purposes other than communicate.

Somehow I doubt a young Dalish elf has access to lore the Magister Lord conquerors of Arlathan didn't have.

I would like to believe Merrill is not stupid enough to actually mess with the prison itself or anything close to it.

@durasteel: Sorry, Do you expect she could've found materials about Eluvians in Kirkwall's black market :s? That seems very unlikely to me.

And yet if confronted directly by the same aggressive Hawke you used in a prior example she admits she was constructing it from advice from guess what sealed spirit inside a totem in a cave on the top of a mountain?

There is nothing stated she magically acquired lore relating to an incredibly rare and stupid elven artifact only those wacko's in the imperium ever took interest in.

And i really don't care what the ultimate answer to the question of why is; Treating with demons is moronic.

That's the lesson here.

Merrill tells Hawke that she wants to converse with Audacity (who is trapped in a statute until Marethari intentionally released it after it was imprisoned for over a millennia) because she might be able to learn why the Eluvian she built remains inert, and she later tells an aggressive Hawke that she has no intention of releasing Audacity from it's prison.

The developers stated Merrill gathered lore about the Eluvians and extracted information from the shard. You're welcome to ignore it, but that doesn't make the facts any less true simply because you're pro-templar.

And Your belief in her magically stumbling upon the lost lore of the construction of mirrors predating the founding of her clan by who knows how long doesn't make it self magically a fact.

Merrill wanted to talk with Audacity. She never expressed any desire to free it, and even spoke against the idea. She even took Hawke with her as a precaution, even when all she was going to do was talk. Marethari is the one who messed up big here.

I thought she extrapolated it from the fragment she did have? If she had known how the mirror was actually made, she just might have been able to make it work, don't you think?

If she had any base understanding of the Mirror i doubt she would have needed a demon's assistance to construct it.

Furthermore that's just speculation; Much like some believing she magically stumbled across ancient elven lore concerning how to make them, Or the belief she used a demon to aid her.

It is a bit of a Batman Gambit, yes. How does Audacity know Marethari so well to begin with?

I'd wager that Marethari and Merrill discussed the corrupted shard, and rebuilding the Eluvian. Audacity has been trapped for over a millennia. It's not as though it had much choice. If Merrill was the intended target, I'd imagine that Audacity would have demanded immediate release in exchange for the knowledge, rather than waiting several years (when Merrill could have been killed within that time in a dangerous city-state inhabited by templars) which was followed by a sudden change in reason by Marethari for opposing the reconstruction of the Eluvian (which is the precise reason that lead to Audacity being freed).

As i said she is ****** and demons proved that deal with demon is sufficient to end as abomnation many mages were stupid and even more smarter than her end that fare she couldn't fool dumb mercenaries in docks... for pride demon she is no match as proven before when she ended turning on you she would end as demon puppet again... marethari just saved her that fate as she took demon on her because she was attached to merril if not marethari merril ends as abomnation if not hawke she would start spread destruction as abomnation...

Actually, it was stated by DG. And maybe I am mistaken, but I think all she wanted from Audacity was being able to cleanse the taint from the mirror through blood magic.

Source, And i'd argue you would mistaken and DG contradicted himself given how she went crawling back to said demon to finish the mirror.

Just makes sense and fits the in game events if she used the Demon in the process of construction.

My last word on Merril/Audacity/Marethari:

This quest should have been pretty easy to follow. The result should have been kind of an argument about risk reward/dealing with demons/blood magic/ends justify the means discussion.

But no, due to the clumsyness of the implementation of this quest we argue about stuff that should have been point blank clear and made perfect sense. Instead most of this quest makes about as much sense as me trying to play soccer with a rolling canon ball.

The whole merril quest comes off as meaningless and pointles and not worth pursuing because of the end result being entirely based on the stupidity of the character who should be the wisest one in the clan.  Either that or she was right about the demon using the eluvian but is never vindicated for it, which makes her just look STUPID.

Alright I am done, no more Merril posts.  Back to templars and mages.

Yes, it was pointed out that Merrill was building the Eluvian from lore she gathered (the kind of lore that Morrigan sought out when she came to Ariane's camp, for example) and the information from the cleansed shard.

And the magisters of Old Tevinter had more power and dabbled in demonology far more often than the mages of modern Thedas. Yet the Tevinter Imperium crumbled because of external forces and the world hasn't been destroyed so far. How could it be so if as much as talking with a demon is enough to let it possess you? And I remind you, Audacity was TRAPPED. It couldn't do absolutely anything unless someone let him out. In this case, Marethari.
