So who would you all cast for Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara?

People are still thinking the mass effect movie is happening? Don't get me wrong I want nothing more than that just seems like it is taking a long time to even get a script haha.

Jake Gyllenhal (see: Source Code)

Karl Urban (see: Almost Human, also He's Karl f'n Urban)

Guy Pearce (see: Lockout)

Eric Bana, only flaw is lack of screen presence compared to some others

Christian Bale, has tremendous presence and can assume any role very well. Also great with action roles.

Good list, I would also add Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) if he has the time (three more Avatar movies in the next four years).
As for Eric Bana it’s less about screen presence then screen time, in both Blackhawk Down and Star Trek I feel he overshadowed the other leads especially Star Trek.

Ashley would be the hardest character to cast, she has to look formidable (for a lack of a better word) and she has to play both a hard arse and have soft side when she is talking about her family, also she cannot look too young (she’s a gunnery chief so that would put her at least about thirty). Katee Sackhoff would be a good choice.

I've been saying this since they announced the film years ago: Matthew Fox ( Jack from Lost) as Shepard and Michelle Rodriguez ( Anna-Lucia from again Lost) as Ashley.

I'm probably a small minority here but I for one would rather see FemShep in the movie.

Katee Sackhoff would get my vote.

For me Katee Sackhoff would make a good Ashley if she can pull off being a brunette, she can pull off a hard ass character type in her sleep (if she can pull off being a brunette she should be playing Wonder Woman in the Batman vs Superman movie). I would look to Claudia Black’s Aeryn Sun in Farscape as a starting template for Ashley.

I'd much prefer her as Ash to Shepard, even if they went Fem Shep. Which I seriously doubt.

Strike Jake. Not believable as a heroic action lead, worse if they went Renegade, IMHO. Otherwise, I like this list.

I realize there's zero chance of the movie featuring femshep, but if it did, here she is.
I'm not sure who I'd prefer as a male Shepard, though it needs to be someone who can convincingly play an intelligent and charismatic Shepard, not a one-dimensional pile of muscle with a gun.

On a semi-related note, I'd like them to give Shepard a background that includes living parents. Then they could have a reunion scene in a hypothetical ME3 movie where Shep's parents are played by...Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale.

it's Eric BANA, not Banner. learn to spell before you join a forum.

and the better question would be whether to cast a lean Shepard or a muscly Shepard.

Really, when I think about it Karl Urban would be my #1 pick. Bale would be good, but ME has a bit of charm and cheese that I don't see him doing it. Karl Urban can pull off the role in spades. Check out his work in Dredd in addition to the aforementioned. He commands the screen and brings a sort of gravitas to the role that few can match.

Worthington, I'd put with Bana, good choice, but doesn't quite have that presence. Same with Gyllenhal (on paper-- I was really entertained by Source Code). However, in thinking back, I forgot about Ben Foster. Pandorum is one of the most underrated sci fi movies.

I honestly hope the movie is canceled. Has there ever been a good movie based on a video game? Not only will it disregard people's choices in a game purportedly based around choices, but it'll probably just be an embarrassing mess.

it depends on who is making it and how. If there are the correct actors chosen, if there are the correct writers who actually are familiar with the source subject and if there is enough budget to actually make it on the scale it requires. A lot of video game movies fail because they try to cash in on the gamers with the familiarity with not the best of casts or budget. Plus there needs to be someone who actually understands that its impossible to include everything and stick to the stronger portions of what movies can offer.

This is true, but it's a lot of Ifs. And considering the general pattern of video game movies, I'm not too hopeful. If it does turn out good, it'll be a pleasant surprise.

I'd prefer that there be no ME movie at all, though if it has to happen then the main charcter should be David Anderson (played by Keith David of course) not Shepard. Trying to fit the plot points of each of the games into a 90-120 minute film doesn't look possible.

Well they dont have to follow the games. The first movie could be an introduction to the hero so maybe a story of heroic soldier Shepard fending off the slaver attack on Elysium.(i think that what the planet was called) Then the next movie could be ME1, then next ME2, then ME3, only focusing on the few main story points.

No matter which way you cut it, you're not going to please your entire audience. With an RPG and its key aspects being the player's CHOICES, everyone's are going to differ in one way or another.

I'm personally against an ME movie that focuses on the game timeline. Why would I want to sit through something that's a) going to have a white male Shepard with a little bit of stubble because heaven forbid we have a man of colour or a woman get the lead in a sci fi action movie, and B) that I've already played through numerous times.  I mean, when has a video game to movie adaptation ever been actually successful in the terms of quality? Sure, they might have made money (Because we'll all want to see it at some point), but quality? (Looking at you, Resident Evil.).

As someone who's read 3/4 novels, I think portraying Anderson and Kahlee's story in dealing with Saren would be a great way to introduce the Mass Effect universe to the big screen. You get our loveable father figure and actual badass Kahlee Sanders with a decent enough plot to keep it interesting. It would also give those players who have not read the novel to finally understand the relationship between Anderson and Saren and how that all started.

Seriously though, by putting yet another male protagonist (In a genre created by a woman), you're not only making it pretty boring, but also you're leaving gaps for young women growing up. I mean, I'm just another twenty something gamer, but if I was a mother and Mass Effect came out with a female lead, and my daughter came home and said "I want to be Commander Shepard!', do you realise how positive that is, having a role model like that? (...renegade actions aside, of course).

Seriously, I think if they do make a movie (groan) taking into consideration of having a whole bunch of unique and capable women on screen would be fantastic, in addition to having Shepard as female.

And seriously, if given the first one makes it, you have to get Yvonne Strahovski for Miranda. Seriously.

I love this post a lot. Female Shepard means a lot to me and it's disappointing constantly seeing her marginalized.

No, actually, I have the quadrilogy of Alien (the 3rd and 4th were crap, don't tell me otherwise.) I love Sigourney Weaver (Hell, she'd make a fantastic Shepard if they wanted an older representation.)

I want a female Shepard to be the choice for the movies, but the ignorant guys at these studios that I've read on about say a female Shepard isn't in their interests because apparently a ) there's already enough 'strong female' characters (which really, in the first one, it's literally.. Ashley, Tali, and Liara. the rest are Kaidan, Anderson, Udina, Joker, and the rest of the male alien squad mates.) and b ) they say it won't sell as well because apparently their main audience plays as Male Shepard (Which is males aged 15-32 or something along those lines) which to be honest, is a load of sexist crap when you realise that 48% of gamers now are WOMEN. (Holy, look at that revelation!)

Seriously, there is literally no reason to not create a sci fi action flick with a female lead. Looking at you, Fetunche, the Alien series that featured Ellen Ripley were an immense success. That was from 1979 and into the 80's. It's 2014, why can't we have some better female representation (again, I'l reiterate, in A GENRE CREATED BY A WOMAN.)

as you said most chose to play as a male.

target audience for video game movies is young males.

it doesn't matter what the break down of overall gamers are. theres only a few things that matter:

A the demographic their aiming for, in this case an action movie in space (its not going to Sci fi hell the games not all that high Sci Fi) focus groups still show this is a male dominated genre (as are sci fi films)

B the majority of players played as a male shepard, on that basis the core audience suggests that a male shepard is more likely what they accepted because its what they expect to see.

its not sexist, its money video game movies rarely make a ton of cash, no studio is going to risk

A ) having a character its target demographic don't identify with. (like it not the ME movie is not for gamers its for movie audiences)

B ) risk alienating the core supporter base.

what would be sexiest would be to cast a female lead and portraying her as little more then a sex object to keep the target demographic.

understand this movie is a cash in buy the movie studios, they dont care about the script the budget or the plot. This is not the sort of film that a studio is going to use to show how progressive and thought provoking they are.

Stop looking at this movie as a Sci-Fi film and look at it how the studio's do….. a big screen adaption of a highly grossing video game thats it be all and end all they won't even want it to be a mature film.

Even if they cast a woman its going to be some big busted piece that is horrible at acting that people pretend she's good when infact jennifer lopez is even a better actor then her……….Yeap it's yet another Angelina Jolie movie.(despite her double mastectomy she still has a 36C bust)

It's sexist in the first place that they wouldn't even consider a woman to play Shepard. I realise it's a horrendous business in Hollywood that it's all about making money when really, you know, artistic value still has some place in cinema. Not much, but some. Again, having a good role model for girls and young women would've been nice instead of yet another grizzly white guy playing the lead.

I mean seriously, there are great actors, men of colour, who could play the lead but also won't get it (Oh look at that racism). Seriously, Idris Elba, Oded Fehr, Jason Momoa. All these great guys who could pull it off won't get casted either.

Really? Seriously? So just assuming it'd be bad because of a female lead? (Because that's not sexist at all.) There are incredible female actors out there that could easily pull off Shepard. Danai Gurira, The Walking Dead; Antje Traue, Pandorum; Rinko Kikuchi, Pacific Rim. So on and so forth.

It's unfortunate that these ass hats won't consider women for the role over making money when really, the benefit could be like what Alien did in the 80s.
